CHAMPION GULCH PASSES AWAY
Gulch (Mr. Prospector--Jameela, by Rambunctious), who had
been the oldest living Breeders’ Cup winner, was euthanized
Sunday at Old Friends due to complications from cancer. The
32-year-old pensioner had been a resident of the Old Friends
retirement center in Georgetown since 2009. A seven-time
Grade I winner while racing for his breeder Peter Brant, Gulch
won the 1986 GI Futurity and GI Hopeful S. He also won the
1987 GI Wood Memorial and GI Metropolitan H. In 1988, Gulch
repeated his victory in the Met Mile and added a win in the
GI Carter H. before capping his career with victory in the
GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint, earning the Eclipse statue as the
nation’s top sprinter. He retired with 13 wins from 32 starts and
earnings of $3,095,521 and began his stud career at Lane’s End
in 1989.
Gulch is the sire of 1995 GI Kentucky Derby winner and
champion Thunder Gulch, as well as multiple Group 1 winner
Nayef and 2011 GI Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Court Vision. He is
also the sire of Grade I winners The Cliff’s Edge and Wallenda--
also a retiree at Old Friends. He was pensioned in 2009.
“As Leroy Jolley, who was Gulch’s first trainer, once said,
‘Gulch must be the toughest horse who ever lived,’ and he was,”
said Old Friends’ founder and president Michael Blowen. “He
was confident, self-possessed and regal. He didn't demand
respect--he earned it. He is irreplaceable.”
NYQUIST WORKS AT SANTA ANITA Champion juvenile Nyquist (Uncle Mo) worked five panels in1:00.80 at Santa Anita Sunday, a day after being namedChampion 2-Year-Old Colt. “The work was as good as Doug[O’Neill] likes to have it,” said O’Neill assistant Leandro Mora.“He went out [six furlongs] in [one] 14 and galloped out [sevenfurlongs] in 1:28. It was very good.” The undefeated colt, who most recently annexed the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, is being pointed towards the GII SanVicente S. Feb. 15. GI Los Alamitos Futurity winner Mor Spirit (Eskendereya) alsoworked Sunday at Santa Anita. With jockey Gary Stevens in theirons, he covered five furlongs in 1:01 in preparation for a startin the GIII Robert B. Lewis S. Feb. 6. “It was a good work,” said Jim Barnes, assistant to trainer BobBaffert. “Gary loved it.”

‘CAPS’ COMES BACK IN TOBOGGAN
Last year’s GI Carter H. winner Dads Caps (Discreet Cat) is
looking to kick off his 6-year-old season in style in Aqueduct’s
GIII Toboggan S. Monday afternoon. The Vincent Scuderi
homebred was third in the GII True North S. at Belmont June 5
behind the ill-fated Rock Fall (Speightstown). On the bench
since, the bay is
given the 8-5 nod
on the morning
line off a solid
worktab.
"I don't see any
negatives with
him; he's doing
very well," trainer
Rudy Rodriguez
said. "Everything
looks like he's
moving up. He's been working very good since we got him back
from vacation, so it looks like he's ready to run. We've definitely
got the Carter [Apr. 9] in mind. Usually when they're away from
the races that long, they look like they need a race. Hopefully,
this is something to move forward from. He looks like he runs
well fresh, so hopefully we can get a decent race and maybe just
freshen him up and take it from there. But if there's another
race coming up, maybe we can try him again. We're still a long
way from home."
Grant Gaston-trained Green Gratto (Here’s Zealous) will likely
be at the head of affairs early. The front-running dark bay, who
was second behind Dads Caps in the Carter, most recently
strung together victories in the GIII Fall Hightweight H. Nov. 26
and the Gravesend S. a month later.

Thoroughbreds find new careers after the race track The
transition from “high strung” race horse to the next stage of life
is not necessarily an easy one. Laura Wiencek, manager at Grand
Haven Stables, is working hard to make that experience better
for the horses while providing an opportunity for area children.

When it concerns casino expansion in Florida, nothing is simple
On the surface, the new gambling compact between the
Seminole Indian Tribe and Florida Gov. Rick Scott looks like a
win-win for both sides. The state is guaranteed $3 billion over
the next seven years from the tribe. In exchange, the Seminoles
will be allowed to operate craps and roulette tables at the
tribe's seven casinos. The agreement limits competition. As
written, it prohibits another destination gaming resort from
being built in Florida while allowing pari-mutuel racing facilities
in South Florida's Miami-Dade and Broward counties to add
blackjack tables. Seems straightforward, right? Howard Stutz,

‘TDN Rising Star’ Constellation made the Sunday feature in
Ozone Park look like a paid workout with a wire-to-wire romp.
The chestnut gained ‘Rising Star’ status after an impressive
first-out graduation going six
panels at the Spa Aug. 9 and
followed with a third-place
effort behind fellow ‘Rising
Star’ Rachel’s Valentina
(Bernardini) in that venue’s GI
Spinaway S. Sept. 5. A
determined runner-up in the
GII Matron S. at Belmont Oct. 18, the filly was last seen
dominating this track’s Furlough S. at this same distance Nov.
26. Away in good order as the overwhelming choice for her
2016 bow, Constellation showed the way through fractions of
:23.57 and :47.15 while under minimal encouragement from
jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. Never threatened turning for home, she
pulled clear to score easily, with Kalabaka getting the best of a
photo for place honors. Initially a $155,000 Keeneland
September buy, these connections snapped up Constellation for
$800,000 at OBS March last year. The winner hails from the
extended family of MGISW Spun Sugar (Awesome Again) and
GISW Daaher (Awesome Again). "The pressure's on when you're
the favorite, [so] it's a relief and, of course, I'm happy for
[Constellation],” commented Toby Sheets, assistant to winning
trainer Steve Asmussen. “She's such a nice filly. She's very
straightforward. She thinks she is the boss and we let her be the
boss. We were kind of indecisive [about leaving her in New
York], but the weather's been really nice, so that's helped a lot.
We're just going to enjoy the win today and move on from
there."

TEAM COLORS (c, 4, Street Cry {Ire}--Teammate {MGSW &

in France for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget and won once from
four trips to post. Sent across the Atlantic to join the Jerkens
barn following a fifth-place effort in an allowance event at
Longchamp Apr. 9, he resurfaced to run third after a wide trip in
a grassy 1 3/16-mile test at Saratoga Aug. 1. A narrowly beaten
runner-up behind Great Dancer (Ire) (Lord Shanakill) going nine
furlongs at the Spa Aug. 23, he reversed his luck with a half-
length score over subsequent two-time winner Fire Away (War
Front) going 10 panels over the inner turf at Belmont. Team
Colors closed out his sophomore season with another pair of
second-place finishes over the sod in Belmont’s Oct. 25 English
Channel S. and this venue’s Dec. 19 Tropical Park Derby. Bet
down to 9-5 favoritism from a morning line allotment of 7-2 for
this first try on dirt, the colt saved ground around the opening
bend and raced in midpack as Tennessee (Giant’s Causeway) led
through a half-mile in :47.64. Shuffled back a bit as the field
condensed on the far turn, he skimmed the rail through a
narrow opening turning for home and edged away from the
pacesetter to score by a long neck. The winner’s dam, who
captured the GII Bonnie Miss S. on dirt at Gulfstream in 2006, is
a half-sister to influential sire and GSW & MGISP War Front

DEAREST (f, 3, Midshipman--Keowee Clai, by Cherokee Run)
captured her six-furlong debut at Gulfstream Park West over
impressive next-out winner R Girls a Charmer (In Summation)
Nov. 28 and was backed down to 6-5 favoritism to remain
unbeaten in this first try facing winners. Away in good order, the
chestnut sparred with Summer Reading (Hard Spun) through a

on the turn in what essentially amounted to a match race.
Continuing on with the protracted duel into the lane, Dearest
gained a narrow advantage in midstretch and made things tight
on her rail-skimming rival in the final yards, holding on to notch
a hard-fought victory by 1 1/4 lengths. There was a stewards’
inquiry into the stretch run, but no action was taken. The winner
sold for $72,000 as a KEESEP yearling and $150,000 as an

and was let go at odds of 9-1 for this event rained off the grass.
Demonstrating sharpened speed from the outset, the filly
pressed the pace from the outside through a measured quarter-

Agree leveled off nicely and reported home 2 1/2 lengths clear
of Heavenly View (Congrats). The winner’s dam is a daughter of

Georgia Horse Racing Coalition Unveils Tracks Plans:
The Georgia Horse Racing Coalition has unveiled plans (click
here to see the plans) for a mixed-use racetrack development
designed by Populous, a global architecture and urban planning
firm.
“Our vision has always been for more than just a racetrack in
Georgia,” said coalition president Dean Reeves. “Our goal is to
reinvent horse racing by combining a racetrack with a mixed-use
development and park to create the ultimate fan experience at
no expense to taxpayers. If horse racing is approved by voters,
Georgia would become the home of a state-of-the-art track that
is just as innovative as the new facilities for the Falcons and

Havanna Belle began her career racing in her native Ireland for
owner T. F. Brennan while under the care of trainer Patrick
Martin. A one-time winner from six starts, she was privately
purchased and shipped to this new locale for the 2015 season.
After two stakes appearances, the bay earned her first Stateside
victory in a one-mile optional claimer here in May. Third in Del
Mar’s Sandy Blue H. Aug. 14, Havanna Belle recently went a bit
off form and did not factor in three tries to close out her
season--including an eighth-place run in the GIII Red Carpet H. in
Oceanside Nov. 21. Let go at a considerable price for this return
to Santa Anita, the 4-year-old tracked the pace through one mile
in 1:37.28 and rallied to post a decisive win. “I’m very happy,”
said winning owner Michael House. “This filly has always shown
promise, but she hasn’t had too many clean trips. Brice put her
into the race today and then got her to relax.” Click for the

AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRYSHOWING THE WAY
by John Berry
If you think that Australian racing's ownership ranks are
dominated by a small domestic clique drawn from the
squattocracy and the upper tiers of the professional classes in
the cities, then you're only a few decades out of date. However,
you might as well be a millennium behind, such has been the
change in the sport's demographic in recent years. Nowadays,
Australian racing and breeding attracts a stunning range of the
game's biggest international investors alongside a domestic
ownership base which makes it the envy of the bloodstock world.
The recent Magic Millions Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast
summed up the situation perfectly. The line-up of overseas
buyers was dazzling, including WinStar, Spendthrift, John Sikura,
Katsumi Yoshida, China Horse Club, Shadwell, and Qatar Racing.
Alongside these, dozens of domestic syndicators competed to
unearth the future star racehorses, star stallions and star
broodmares which will surely graduate from the auction. While
there is a significant level of syndicate involvement in ownership
around the world, in Australia its extent is unparalleled. Its
popularity is based on three principal factors. Firstly, racing
takes a more prominent place in society there than in probably
any other country in the world. Secondly, prize money is
extremely good. Thirdly, the valuations of Australian breeding
stock have been boosted in recent years by burgeoning
international involvement in the country. Cont. p2
A FILLY FOR THE FUGUE MG1SW The Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}) has delivered her first
foal. The Lloyd-Webber’s Watership Down Stud announced via
Twitter on Sunday that the four-time Group 1 winner had
delivered a filly foal by Dubawi (Ire) (Dubai Millennium {GB}) and
that the mare is “very happy
with her first foal.” The Fugue
was also bred by Watership
Down Stud out of the Sadler’s
Wells mare Twyla Tharp (Ire)
and the former John Gosden
trainee enjoyed one of her
finest hours on the racecourse
when beating Al Kazeem (GB)

A Filly for The Fugue (cont. from p1)
The Fugue’s final victory was also special when she beat Classic
and Breeders’ Cup winner Magician (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and
Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) in a memorable edition of the
G1 Prince of Wales’s S. at Royal Ascot in 2014, breaking the
course record in the process. In reference to The Fugue, John
Gosden once said, "She never ceased to amaze us with her
athletic ability." If she can pass this athleticism on to her
offspring, the team at Watership Down Stud have lots to dream
about.

Australian Industry Showing the Way
(cont. from p1)
In short, an Australian who outlays, say, $30,000 for a 10%
share in a racehorse can feel that he is taking part in a
mainstream and fashionable pastime, has a realistic chance of
getting a significant return on his investment through prize
money, and could possibly have a valuable commodity--whether
stallion or broodmare--to sell at the end.
Furthermore, the fact that Australian syndicators are regulated
as tightly as stock exchange traders (hence the reassurance in
newspaper advertisements that the syndicator is "holder of AFS
license number …") gives investors a confidence in the probity of
the deal which is not always mirrored in syndicates elsewhere.
For every high-profile debacle (such as the infamous purchase of
Black Caviar's (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}) yearling half-brother
'Jimmy' for $5 million in 2013, when the upshot was that the
sales company was not paid, the horse died in mysterious
circumstances and both the syndicator and the investors' money
disappeared) there are more than enough cases of syndicates
being run with total transparency and honesty to maintain the
confidence of potential investors.
Black Caviar herself ranks as the most successful syndicated
racehorse, but that is merely because she ranked in a league of
her own as a racehorse, dominating the international sprinting
ranks like no other. She is, though, far from the country's only
high-profile syndication success story. Investors in the country's
numerous syndicate-owned champions have ended up not only
having the ride of their lives, but also making big profits--and
have done so so noticeably that they have encouraged the
continuing growth of this form of ownership. While the primary
dividend to the share-holder in a good horse is the prize money,
the secondary one, the horse's breeding value, has swelled
enormously in recent years thanks to the international interest
in Australian bloodstock. A generation ago, Robert Sangster and
Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum were pretty much the
only major international investors making a big impact on the
Australian bloodstock scene. Sangster became a major player in
the early '80s, his legacy continuing to this day in Australia
through his son Adam. The Maktoums followed, as did Nelson
Bunker Hunt, but only Sheikh Hamdan remained a major
investor throughout. Cont. p3

Sheikh Mohammed, though, has reinforced his presence inAustralia this century--most notably with the purchase ofWoodlands Stud in 2008--and this has proved crucial to Darley'semergence as a major dual-hemisphere breeding operation. The shuttle-stallion boom has been key to the increasedinvolvement of major North American and European studs in theAustralian market. Coolmore was the first to put downantipodean roots, initially through links which Robert Sangsterdeveloped with the Lindsay Park training and breedingoperation of the late, great Colin Hayes and then through itsconnections with Arrowfield. Vinery followed suit, and theimportance of shuttling has continued to grow, to the extentthat the ability to earn money in both hemispheres is nowcrucial to the valuation of a stallion. The G1 Golden Slipper S.has been pivotal to the commercial development of Australianracing, and last season's winner Vancouver (Aus) (Medagliad’Oro) sums up the situation perfectly. 2008 Golden Slipperwinner Sebring (Aus) (More Than Ready) proved a greatadvertisement for the syndication business. He was bought byStar Thoroughbreds as a yearling for A$130,000 before earningA$2,537,060 for his connections. Widden Stud then bought acontrolling interest in him in a deal which reportedly valued himat A$30 million, and he now commands a fee of A$66,000 (inc.GST). Vancouver, though, provides an even better illustration.Bought at the 2013 Magic Millions Yearling Sale for A$185,000by Gai Waterhouse acting with bloodstock agent James Harron,he was raced by a syndicate comprising some establishedpatrons of the stable. His Golden Slipper victory last March tookhis 2-year-old earnings to A$2,332,500--a figure which wasdwarfed by the A$40-million valuation at which a controllinginterest in him was sold shortly afterwards to a consortiumheaded by Coolmore and also including the China Horse Club. That A$40-million valuation emphasizes the importance ofshuttling to the major studs' economies. It might prove hard torecoup that investment if Vancouver covers only in Australia, but there is significant potential for profit if his stud careerblossoms in Europe too. Under the circumstances, it is nosurprise that Vancouver is following the likes of Haradasun (Aus)(Fusaichi Pegasus), Starspangledbanner (Aus) (Choisir {Aus}) andSo You Think (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) to Aidan O'Brien's stablein Ireland to try to establish his reputation in Europe. In doingso, he is providing a reminder that the Australian bloodstockindustry is now a very big factor in the international scene.
