AsphalteneChallenge - The complex nature of asphaltene stability in crude oils
within individual reservoirs creates a myriad of production problems.
Asphaltenes are of particular interest to the petroleum industry because
of their role in deposition in production equipment and/or high viscosity to
crude oils, reducing production.
Solution - Champion utilizes a holistic assessment of system
parameters such as temperature and pressure to develop an
understanding of the risks at different points in the system so that
the appropriate chemical solution can be applied. Research and
development is ongoing to develop a robust line of inhibitors and
dispersants to mitigate asphaltene instability.
CHOP - Cold Heavy Oil Production (With sand and without sand)Challenge - CHOPs process can be costly and challenging. Sand
production can lead to inflow, pumping, flowline, and separation issues.
High density, viscous oils can create dehydration issues once the
fluids are produced. Separating oil, water and sand means continual
possibilities of soil, water, and atmospheric pollution.
Solution - Champion Technologies has sand suspension and friction
reducer product lines to assist in production of heavy oil. We also develop
superior demulsifiers to assist in dehydration and solids removal from the
produced oil. These demulsifiers can produce “brighter” oil, clean water,
and tight interfaces.
Offshore productionChallenge - Heavy oils can present flow assurance challenges with
asphaltenes, viscosity, and emulsion problems due to cold seabed
production temperatures. Viscosity can increase from unstable
asphaltenes caused by high temperatures needed in the processing
plant to separate water and heavy oil. Breakthrough and natural water
generate emulsions that result in even higher viscosities. These issues,
in addition to environmental challenges, make producing heavy oil in
greater depths very difficult.
Solution - Champion Technologies has developed environmentally-
acceptable multifunctional products to combat offshore heavy oil
challenges. Our multifunctional demulsifiers and viscosity reducers can
be applied downhole, as far upstream as possible, to break emulsions to
reduce friction in tubing and flowlines and improve pump efficiencies.
Our asphaltene inhibitors are used in conjunction with our demulsifier
products to stabilize asphaltenes – avoiding blockage and precipitation
of asphaltenes, maintaining original viscosity, improving dehydration,
increasing production (by reduced pressure drop), and reducing fuel
used for heating at lower temperatures.
Oil sands surface miningChallenge – Oil sands ore is dry mined and slurried with hot water
in the mine area. Hydro-transportation to the process plant sees the
bitumen begin to separate as froth. Bitumen separation is completed
in extraction and the froth is collected, diluted, and moved forward to
froth treatment. Here, water and solids (clay and mineral fines from
the ore) are removed prior to the bitumen going to the upgrader. Due
to the volumes mined and the inconsistency of the ore, recovery of the
sufficient bitumen and the subsequent removal of the last remaining
Meeting heavy oil and oil sands challengesAt Champion Technologies, we are focused on developing technical solutions that address your key desired
outcomes. We are stepping up efforts to research the root cause of problems and develop sustainable
solutions by working together globally and looking ahead to understand the technology gaps in the heavy
oil market. We actively support and participate in professional associations and education, training, and
technology-developed programs sponsored by industry consortia, colleges, and universities.
solid fines and water from the froth is challenging. Corrosion erosion is
also a major concern in this process.
Solution - Champion Technologies has been the leader in bitumen froth
treatment for 20 years through the application of its range of custom
formulated demulsifiers. Our mining team has conducted applied
research and provided field support in the development of process aids to
assist bitumen separation, solutions to help with tailings processing, and
chemistries to provide solutions in upgrading and asset integrity.
Thermal in-situChallenge - Production fluids in thermal in-situ operations present
unique upstream treatment challenges from stable reverse emulsions
through to the management of produced waters to feed steam
generation equipment.
Solution - Champion Technologies has extensive experience and on-site
experts who take a holistic approach to effective treatment by focusing
on the entire facility. Our customized demulsifiers and reverse emulsion
breakers begin the cycle with technology and application features that
give on-spec oils with virtually no interface issues or waste while reducing
water disposal needs and increasing usage for steam production.
This technology combination results in minimal water treatment in the
final stages which maintains the flow of clean water and steam while
maximizing production.
ViscosityChallenge - Viscosity in heavier crudes, generally greater than in
conventional oil, is affected by fluctuating temperatures and pressures
found in individual deposits around the world. This variance in viscosity
requires a variety of recovery methods to be employed. Viscosity of
heavy crudes can be many times higher than conventional oils and can
be affected by temperature and pressure changes during production
or transportation. This elevated viscosity can create many production
challenges due to the drag imparted on pumping and transportation
equipment, resulting in lower than desired production rates and frequent
service interventions.
Solution - Champion Technologies manages viscosity to improve the
flow characteristics of heavy oil. Downtime is reduced and production
is increased without negative effects on oil treatment. This viscosity
management solution extends from production to pipeline and transport.
Water managementChallenge - Produced water is the largest by-product associated with oil
production and the costs of managing large volumes of it is an important
component of the overall cost of producing oil.
Solution - Champion Technologies has specific product development
programs aimed at treating and managing these water issues. Our
engineered approach to cleaning produced water has proven very
effective in field applications across the globe. These solutions tackle
water management by systematically clarifying water and protecting
process equipment.
We collaborate with other members of the global community to advance heavy oil and oil sands
science through joint research projects and peer-reviewed technical papers. Through these activities,
we stay connected to best practices in the industry and continually augment our knowledge and
understanding of heavy oil and oil sands processes.
