A sustainable future for industry and society
The GFG Alliance is an international alliance of independent companies that work for tomorrow’s generations as much as for today’s. On a planet of limited resources, rising population and cycles of prosperity and recession, we place great emphasis on making our enterprises both resilient and sustainable.
For more than 60 years we’ve operated in sectors that are fundamental to the economy: energy, metals, engineering, logistics, as well as infrastructure, financial services, property and mining. We’ve always sought to add value to these industries by doing things differently, and that remains the prevailing spirit of our companies today.
At the heart of the GFG Alliance approach is our focus on integrating and innovating to deliver value throughout the process; from the renewable energy that recycles metal in our furnaces and mills, and the precision engineering in our manufacturing plants, to the industry-friendly financial services that enable trade and invigorate the whole business environment in which we operate.
With a range of physical assets and human resources spanning over 30 countries and over 300 sites, our business is constantly growing and evolving in pursuit of our corporate vision. Our ability to deliver that vision is defined not only by the size of our operation, but by the quality of our people. We recruit the best, safeguard people and skills, and then invest to ensure they continue to grow as we do.
We have an industrial heritage that stretches back many decades but more importantly, we have an inspiring vision that delivers a smarter, more sustainable and viable future for both industry and society. It is a vision that will ensure we continue to push the boundaries and deliver for many decades to come.

Decoupled IntegrationGFG Alliance operates across the entire supply chain
The GFG Alliance combines the expertise of world-class industrial, natural and financial resources, working together to deliver a competitive solution through a strategy called decoupled integration.
With capabilities spanning commodities trading, recycling, energy, mining, steel and aluminium manufacture, advanced engineering, as well as financial and property services, the Alliance members are individually owned and managed but collectively offer decades of expertise that delivers a strong competitive edge across the value chain.
Their common purpose is the regrowth of industry and the strategy for delivering this vision is called decoupled integration.
Through this approach each of the GFG Alliance businesses is integrated to serve the other parts of the group while also delivering for their external customers.
The model enables economic value creation for the core industrial group with the full benefits of integration while ensuring each business operates in an agile way enabling independent growth.

GREEN strategiesAn economically and environmentally sustainable future for the global metals industry
The GFG Alliance, is transforming steel and aluminium manufacturing into a global product and technology leader through its GREENSTEEL and GREENALUMINIUM strategies.
GREENSTEEL aims to recycle and upcycle the growing mountain of scrap steel, using electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy. Raw materials and resources are secured locally to make world-class products that sell both nationally and globally. High grade engineered steel and alloys from the process feed engineering operations that make advanced components for demanding sectors such as automotive, aerospace, marine, off-road and defence.
GREENSTEEL provides a more flexible and customer focused solution while also reducing the carbon footprint of manufacture, shortening the supply
chain, retaining and upgrading skills, stimulating new technologies and engendering a sustainable and globally competitive metal manufacturing sector. GFG is actively pursuing GREENSTEEL in the UK, Australia and the USA whilst it is also developing plans for implementing the strategy globally.
The GFG Alliance has also recently extended its GREENSTEEL approach to aluminium production where it is currently using the same principles to transform this sector through its GREENALUMINIUM strategy.

AluminiumGreener aluminium for growing industries
GFG Alliance has a growth strategy in aluminium as a core product in its portfolio and sees an opportunity in adding value to aluminium for the benefit of customers and communities.
The GFG Alliance’s vision for re-establishing metals manufacturing in the UK resulted in the re-birth of the British Aluminium brand. The Alliance acquired the last primary aluminium smelter in the country, based in Fort William. The facility currently manufactures 48,000 tonnes of slab and sow every year and is powered by hydropower and biofuel energy, making it one of the greenest metal production plants in the world.
In addition to serving the international market with semi-finished aluminium, the Alliance is also investing to upgrade the smelter and has recently been granted planning permission to build a brand new facility for the production of aluminium wheels. When fully constructed, the state of the art plant will be the only UK based site of this type and will manufacture
products for the UK and European automotive industry. It will complement the Alliance’s current downstream aluminium capabilities which include 5 aluminium casting operations, an aluminium wheel plant in France and an aluminium pressings facility, serving the same market.
As a further step in growing its aluminium portfolio, in December 2018 the GFG Alliance acquired the largest European aluminium smelter based at Dunkirk from Rio Tinto. Plans for the smelter include both serving existing customers with aluminium slab and ingots, as well as working with all stakeholders to develop downstream manufacturing activities to serve the growing European automotive market.

The GFG Alliance’s model involves creating a metals recycling supply chain that provides a stable footing for growth.
GFG Alliance’s recycling business holds a well-established position in its chosen markets supplying steel making raw materials to domestic and international mills through a collaborative partnership model between suppliers and consumers. Handling over 3 million tonnes a year of ferrous material the recycling business is a significant contributor to the raw material requirements of the steel industry and provides a sustainable alternative to landfill capturing the full value in use of the materials recycled.
The business’ experience in international non-ferrous trading and marketing; key relationships with consumers; close proximity to and local knowledge of markets, are key assets of the non-ferrous recycling business.
The diverse geographical spread of global offices are staffed by a multi-national and multi-cultural team
of trading and administrative support professionals providing a unique offering to our suppliers and customers alike.
Expanding on the well-established Australasian footprint and knowledge base, the Alliance is developing its network of suppliers as well as advanced collection and processing facilities for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals across the UK, USA and continental Europe. EnergyRenewable energy generation to power a sustainable industrial vision
The GFG Alliance is a fast growing developer and operator of renewable power in the UK and Australia.
Renewable power is at the heart of GFG Aliance’s activities as it looks to ensure a long term, stable and sustainable power source for industry. It is developing a wide portfolio of renewable assets in the UK and Australia.
The Group already delivers low-carbon energy from hydro and biofuel sources for use in its own industrial activities and in the wider market.
The Alliance will continue to drive the development of other green power sources and/or acquire additional generation capacity using technologies such as wind, hydro, pumped hydro, solar, battery storage and
energy from waste.
Looking further into the future, GFG has invested in the development of tidal power, which will harness the energy of the tides in a programme that could deliver 8% of the UK’s electricity needs. GFG also has the capabilities for the manufacture of wind turbine towers and transmission line pylons and is looking to expand its renewable energy portfolio with the addition of other power assets.

InfrastructureA platform for commodities, industry and logistics
Commercial ports, railway stock and marine fleets as well as storage facilities provide the Alliance with the ability to extend services to customers and support the delivery of its own value-added activities.
The GFG Alliance companies own and manage the Whyalla port in South Australia, and three ports in the UK, three on the River Usk in South Wales and a facility in Blyth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
The Whyalla port services GFG Alliance’s mines and its steel facilities in South Australia. The plant caters for inbound raw materials, storage and blending of iron ore for export, and the loading of transhipping vessels with export iron ore and steel. Significant upgrades completed in 2013 saw the installation of state-of-the-art equipment – including a new high-capacity ship-loader and negative pressure storage sheds – enabling the mining business’ export capacity to more than double to ~13mtpa.
The facility also has a plan to cater to third party product flows for South Australia.
The UK ports are equipped with specialist heavy duty gantry cranes for handling steel and other products and can achieve a high output performance, crucial to their ability in being able to turn vessels round quickly.
The Alliance’s companies also have a railway fleet which transports materials and goods to various manufacturing locations within the UK and Australia.
The Group’s shipping division assists both external and internal clients with logistics services and supply chain management solutions.

Education & SkillsProviding a platform for learning with a focus on industry
The GFG Foundation aims to address the growing skills gaps in industry and enable young people and experienced workers to reach their potential.
The GFG Foundation was established to help develop skills for people to start or continue working in specific industries in which the Alliance is active such as engineering, metals and renewable energy.
Whether by inspiring young people through structured work experience to seek careers in engineering or by providing training so mature workers can adapt and upskill for modern industry, the GFG Foundation is helping people realise their potential.
Working with respected partners such as the Industrial Cadets programme, inspired by HRH The Prince of Wales and delivered by the Engineering Development Trust, the Foundation aims to help improve the prospects of 5,000 people over a three-year period.
Its support includes: grants to enhance existing local or regional skill-building projects, funding for intensive industry-related work experience or mentoring and bursaries to help talented young people undertake high-level technical courses.
It also supports local, national and international STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programmes, aimed at inspiring young people’s interest in these fields and providing a pipeline of talent for innovation and new technology.
In addition to skills support, the Foundation will look for opportunities to support primary education.
