Interview Framework for senior change/programme manager posts Evidence Conclusions Welcome and Introduction Introduce assessors, welcome and outline the interview structure. Questions for XX minutes followed by their questions

Motivation What is it about this role that interests you in particular?

Have they understood the role correctly, have they made the link to their own competency?

Influence/Engagement A major part of this role is influencing without authority with a variety of stakeholders. When in your career to date have you been tasked with bringing a diverse group of people including senior players on board to a new policy or initiative? What steps did you take to engage with the differing audiences?

We are looking for evidence here that they understand the importance of preparing a convincing argument and having the facts to support your debate. We want evidence that they have overcome resistance and have examples of changing mindsets etc.

Evidence Conclusions Change Management This is in essence a change management role. What experience do you have of leading and managing change? Did you achieve the progress you expected? How did you measure that?

Here we want evidence of their understanding of change management, the barriers, the enablers, the drivers, communication, measurement, planning and getting sponsors on board etc. In particular we want them to know where the organisation was and where it needed to get to and why.

Creative/Innovation This team is definitely of the opinion that XXXXXX does not need to be dull and pride themselves on taking a creative and innovative approach where appropriate. What is the most innovative thing you have done in your career? Why did you take that approach?

This is where we want them to excite us, we pose the question in an upbeat way and encourage them to take the opportunity to surprise us with something innovative and different. We want to know that the approach was valid and based upon sound judgement and…that it worked.

Analysis Although fun and high profile, the facts are very important in this role, we are often faced with huge statistical reports to analyse and report back on. When have you been required to take complex information, analyse it and communicate the key points to someone else?

We want evidence that they have taken data, analysed it and drawn conclusions. We need to probe this hard as we are also looking for their ability to do so under pressure as urgent issues can arise.

Evidence Conclusions Planning and Organising This is a complex role requiring multi-tasking, travel, changing priorities and new issues coming in at all times. Please give an example of how you have worked under pressure of time, had to re-evaluate the priorities in order to achieve objectives. How do you manage your time and workload?

We want evidence of multi-tasking, working under pressure, time management techniques and prioritisation

Programme Management 1.Please give and example of a programme you have lead and delivered. What approach did you take to managing the programme to ensure successful outputs? What challenges did you have to overcome to deliver to time, budget and quality standards How did you measure the success of the programme 2. Please describe a programme you have commissioned outlining the process you went through for supplier selection, engagement, monitoring and measurement of outcomes.

Here we are looking for a structured approach. Time plans, clear responsibilities, sponsorship, milestones, KPI’s. We are looking for delivery so the measurement is critical. Again we are looking for a structured approach but we also want evidence of valuing the supplier as well as testing them.

Management/Leadership What experience do you have of managing and motivating others? How would you describe your management style?

We want evidence again, so if they describe their style as ‘inspirational’ where is the evidence, what is it about what they do that justifies that statement?
