HONOUR STUDENTS
We had a great celebration of hard working students who have set goals and
who were rewarded for their achievement at last Friday’s assembly. We
acknowledge 4 students who have earned their Rivervale Primary School Honour
Student Badge: Dhana Basdeo (Rm2), Deacon McGuire (Rm2), Hayden Tran
(Rm5) and Leo Periz (Rm5) are the first recipients of this tremendous award.
This badge is the top level of our Star Chart, Faction ticket and rewarding positive
attitudes program. These children have earned 120 faction tickets and have
completed 6 star charts. Collectively we say to them “very well done”
Currently we have 3 staff at the school: Mr Burns, Mrs Wheatley and
Mr Kiernan, who are working hard with staff, students and community members
to make Rivervale Primary a Super Safe School. We are investigating how
students travel to school, how safe they are when they travel and how we can
make the local community a safe and better connected environment.
Mr Kiernan is focusing on bike/scooter travel and safety. Mrs Wheatley is looking
at pedestrian travel and safety and Mr Burns is meeting with other agencies to
increase staff knowledge, school resources and planning. A simple start that all
parents can make is this, “If your child rides or scooters to school –
MAKE THEM WEAR A HELMET”. Rivervale Primary School is endeavouring
to be a Super Safe School.
COMMUNITY ART PROJECT
We are very lucky to have local artist, Charlotte O’Shea working with a group of parents to come up with 4 exciting
art installations. These art pieces will reflect programs and values that are important to Rivervale Primary. They will
be placed at the front of the school near the old kindergarten building. It is not too late to get involved with this
group (Tuesday 1.30pm – 2.30pm)
PARKING
As a part of our Super Safe School approach we are looking at current practices. We have been provided with extra
street parking by the City of Belmont. We are very lucky with regard to parking spaces compared to every other
school in the metropolitan area.
Mr Major is currently redefining bike and scooter movement into and out of the school. We believe that it is
currently a little unsafe for bike riders/scooter riders and also for pedestrians. The area where staff park behind the
gardeners building, near TLC3 (Pre Primary), is a NO PARKING ZONE FOR PARENTS. This will soon be the only entry
and exit point for bike and scooter riders. When you see what we have planned for this area you will appreciate
this request.

Financial Support provided by parents has always played an enabling role in the provision of resources that extend the school’s capacity to add value to student’s learning experience. For example, parent contributions allow schools to provide text books instead of students having to provide their own. Payments can be made directly to the school by cash or EFTPOS, into our bank account (details available on the schedule).

VALUES PROGRAM—PATHS
When students learn about “Setting Goals” in P.A.TH.S., it can be in the context of problem solving but they are made aware that goal setting is not only associated with problem solving but can be long and short term goals in the context of employment, their school work or their interests. Students identify that a long term goals take much longer to achieve and sometimes are made up of many short term goals. It’s very important to think about goals when we have a problem, because that helps us decide what to do. Whenever we have a problem, it’s important to decide how we want our problem to end and this can be in relation to a short term goal but also a long term goal. When setting the goal for a positive ending, the student will focus on a positive outcome or an outcome that will be the best ending possible that will make the situation better not worse, and the solution will not hurt anyone else.
Students are encouraged to consider the following:
1. If your goals involve hurting other people, other people may eventually set goals to hurt you.
2. If you do things that are positive for others, other people are more likely to do things that are also positive for you.
3. The world would be a safer, happier place in which to live if we all set positive goals when we had problems.
These three points are important discussion points at home as well as in the classroom and we encourage
parents/caregivers to use the model of problem solving, have discussions about goal setting and the role it plays
in problem solving and the effect the selection of an appropriate goal can have on the problem to be solved. The
use of real situations is far more meaningful for students to understand the role that problem solving takes and
the capturing of every day situations allows students to practise their skills.
