LIKE ALL SCHOOLS IN IRELAND PRES BRAY SHUT IT’S DOORS IN EARLY MARCH AND THOUGH THERE WAS SOMETHING OF A SUMMER HOLIDAY VIBE THAT DAY I AM SURE THAT THE MOOD MAY WELL HAVE CHANGED IN THE MEAN-TIME. WE WOULD BE INTERESTED IN HEARING FROM STUDENTS WHO HAVE A DE-SIRE TO SHARE WITH THEIR SCHOOLMATES . IT NEED NOT BE COVID 19 RELAT-ED BUT IT CAN OF COURSE BE THAT ALSO

IN THIS FIRST EDITION WE HAVE ARTICLES FROM OUR TY STUDENTS ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS INCLUDING SCHOOL SPORTS, HEALTH AND WELLBEING, MOVIES AND GAMES AND A HOMILY TO ONE OF OUR YOUNGER AND APPAR-ENTLY MORE POPULAR TEACEHRS (SEE BELOW)

WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU,

WHY MR GANTLEY DESERVES A PAY RISE

Mr. Gantly is a teacher in Pres who really does deserve a pay rise. Mr. Gantly somehow makes poems not the doom of humanity and instead of dreading English I look forward to it. In all of my ‘big’ exams with Herr Gantly as my English teacher ive gotten a B or better. He would always be good craic in class, except for his Star Wars ref-erences. He would denounce some people in our class over the 2 years we spent with him. He would christen these people with the title of ‘Sour’ or if you had a moment of ‘Sourness’ he would announce that you were indeed ‘Sour Enough’. There was no comeback to these words. Your fate had been decided. You had to go about the rest of your day with a sense of embarrassment and humiliation. You would only be able to live with human dignity if you reversed your fate by doing/wearing ‘Standards’. If it was a non-uniform day and your wore formal clothes such as say a shirt, a tie and classy suit pants. “Mr. Gantly loves a certain fried dough confectionery.”

P.E. is one of the most important subjects in secondary school as it encourages a healthy lifestyle through exercise. If P.E was a modular subject, where each class plays at least four different sports in a year, for at least six weeks per sport. I also believe that P.E should be a compulsory subject for every year and that each class should have double P.E twice a week as it is really good for your mental health. Last year, when doing my Junior Cert I found that playing sports and exercising regularly helped to clear my mind and helped me to take a break from studying. Gaelic football and hurling make up part of our national sport. They should defi-nitely be open to every student in Pres and we should take great pride in these games. The inclusion of these sports would certainly improve the school in many ways.

Mental Health Having a good environment can lead to more work being done in class and a happier environment. Drop everything and walk can be extremely useful .This can help students take a breather during school time that can help take a short break and stretch out the legs. Introducing Getting a library in school will bring another option for students to do during lunch, free classes or as another option for students that may not be able to take part in class, such as, having an injury An extra P.E class in transition year will expand the variety of activities. One P.E class should be chosen by students. Introducing some of these examples into school can majorly help mental health in school, which would provide bet-ter work ethics and a more enjoyable time in school. James Byrne Gallen

MR GANTLEY DESERVES A PAY RISE

A HEALTHIER PRES

Mr. Gantly loves a certain fried dough confectionery. That certain confection became a mainstay in specifically 3rd year. A group of 3 students bought Mr. Gantly 3 of these confections of the Off beat variation. Many jokes were had about binge eating these doughy eats. Near the end of 3rd year Mr. Gantly decided to be a Saint and purchase a glazed confection for every member of the class of god like mammals 3:5. Mr Gantly always did a really good job explaining the fake

meanings behind poems that the department of Education put him in the difficult position of having to teach to us. Answering questions in the categorisation of poems was actually a thing we were able to do and were quite capable of. This illustrates the extremely good techniques Mr. Gantly used to teach us students. In conclusion, Mr. Gantly de-serves a Pay Rise for being a cool dude and a solid teacher. Matthew Cunningham

Does Going to the Gym Stunt Your Growth?

Myths

One of the biggest myths about weight lifting is that it stunts your growth. No studies have ever been shown that lifting weights stunts or inhibits growth. But, as with any exercise program, if you do too much too soon, physical problems can occur no matter how old the person doing the exercise is. Supervision, Supervision, Supervision The most important aspects when training as a child are supervision, exercise technique, light weights, and high repetitions in the 12, 15, and even 20 rep range. As a teen, you may gradually progress to heav-ier weights with lower reps, around 10 per set. Supervision is key. The risk of injury is real but it depends on technique and supervision. Reported weight lifting injuries in children range from fractures, spondylolysis, meniscal tears, and herniated disks to disloca-tions and cardiac rupture. The vast majority of these injuries occur in kids working out by themselves, without supervision. For healthy chil-dren who are taught proper lifting form by qualified trainers or thera-pists and who work out in a supervised, non-competitive environment, the risk of injury is very low and the potential for benefits is great. Motivation You won't make good gains unless you are properly motivated. A child being pushed by an aggressive coach or parent should not be training. A serious young athlete with reasonable training goals, supportive par-ents, and a qualified coach can benefit from strength training routine, in which you train different body parts on different days.

Politics

Great to see TY students Adam

Costello and Raven Gabriel

engage with some big political

topics.

Adam writes a strong op-ed

piece on the UN and his criti-

cism is timely

Raven focuses on an ongoing

issue in the Philippines and

opens up a window to events

in a country that does not get

enough exposure

Does Going to the Gym Stunt Your Growth?(continued)

The UN was established shortly after the end of World War II, to ensure that the nations of the world never again, would engage in another mass armed conflict. The UN have held their word, apart from the fact that there have been a count-less number of small armed conflicts involving heavy casualties. Essentially the UN are quick to dismiss these frighteningly regular conflicts and killing, merely because they’re not occurring in the Western World. They are not occurring in the west but practically all have western involvement, or are western proxy wars. There is a part of the UN called the security council, this is the problem with the UN: five permanent members of the Security Council are France, China, America, Russia and The United Kingdom. Five permanent mem-bers along with 10 other, not permanent members constitute the council, but the issue is, the council, the five members that have all the power can never agree on anything as a result of them hating each other. Then subjects like war crimes come up and one of them will be an ally of that country that’s being accused of a war crime so they’ll veto the charge and it’ll be dropped. Because they can veto whatever the f*** they want. Essentially, the UN is a militia run by political sell-outs. The so called peace keep-ers, that the security council both supports and employs, during the Kosovo War, were the ones responsible for 800 cases of sexual abuse, 70 counts of murder and 100 counts of extortion/ theft. The UN spent 9 billion on military operations in 2016 and in the same year, they spent 6 billion on food and aid for countries in need (the thing they’re supposed to be doing), this is due to them believing that there can not be a country with no UN input or military help.

If you are a normal teen, some-

where between sedentary and

athletic, you should undertake a

more intense program. As a be-

ginner, you want to work out three

times a week, doing 10 repeti-

tions per set, and around 4 sets

per exercise. Use 3 to 4 exercises

per body part. Try to stay away

from compound movements

(using a number of muscles, i.e.

clean & jerk, bench press, dead-

lift), as their execution is very

technical, and you can injure

yourself if you are not under prop-

er supervision. Once you become

more advanced, you may wish to

switch to a split.

THE UN SHOULD BURN

He has made claims that he is "The Appointed Son of God", as well as being Owner of the Universe.

School closures and the present “lockdown” makes one aware of just

how important community is.

Remote learning is wonderful but even as a teacher you miss the banter

with students and staff. I can imagine that many students are missing

the craic in the halls and classrooms .

For those who have been studying for state exams this makes an al-

ready challenging time even more so.

This paper is an attempt to provide some way of maintaining connec-

tions and it is always useful to write something down and to remember

or look forward to good times.

SCHOOL SPORTS

Many TY students wrote

about the issue of the

sports available in Pres

Bray.

While it is always difficult

for any school to do eve-

rything this is an issue

which students feel

strongly about and has

merit

Here Conor Fee writes

about his experience of

sport in Pres

UP THE GA

When first I came to Pres I didn’t really know what sports Pres really played. I soon realized that other main sports that many students al-ready played before coming into Pres such as Gaelic football and football weren’t a choice to play. I was truly surprised about this decision Pres made as the 2 sports that I played and knowing that I wouldn’t be able to play these sports in the first 3 years of me being in secondary school I was quite hurt. As a couple of weeks passed I got over it and started playing rugby. I was excited to start playing as I didn’t really know how the game worked and was interested to see if i will be any good at it. Now I’m n transition year l have started playing u17s football, ty and senior Gaelic football as it’s a new sport for us because you can only play these sports in your senior cycle. I think it doesn’t really make sense because your going into your leaving cert and getting ready for it, you won’t have as much time to play all these sports and to study as well. I don’t know why Pres don’t allow these sports to be played in the junior cycle years. This will give more variety to sport when coming into the school and will also allow people coming into the school to make new friends.
