CHANGINGLIVESFOR A LIFETIME

2015 Annual ReportBUTLER COUNTY FAMILY YMCA

CHANGING LIVES FOR A LIFETIMEThe Y is all about change. Changing lives for our youth as they become our future. Changing our own routines and eating habits to lead healthier lifestyles. Changing ideas and perceptions to strengthen our community. Change is good. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “When you’re finished changing, you’re finished.” We’re not finished. We’re not even close. We know the impact that the Y has on communities worldwide, and we know that we can affect change beginning in our own community as we all work together for a better us.

“Dear Friends,Strengthening community is our driving force – it is our cause. Thanks to the dedication of our generous contributors, volunteers and staff, we are able to change lives by putting this mission into action. As we continue to grow, our partners share our commitment to helping people reach their greatest potential. With your support, the Y can reach more people with high impact programs and services that can forever change lives. Together, we are building a better us.”

It’s never too early to get moving and establish healthy habits. That’s why the Y incorporates physical fitness into all of our youth development programs. Active kids build strong bodies, have increased energy, build confidence and have better memory. Youth find a place to belong at the Y. From swim lessons to Youth & Government, our Y helps kids and teens become confident youth today and contributing, successful adults tomorrow.

Learning how to swim is an essential life skill that everyone should have. Collectively, the YMCA is the largest instructor of swim lessons across the country. Last year, 4,653 swim lessons taught youth vital swim skills and water safety at our YMCA.

Summer camp is a road map for kids. It guides them to set goals and try new, creative endeavors through interactive physical, social and educational activities: all while building relationships and important life skills. Last summer, 500 kids forged new paths in our YMCA Day Camp.

Children are like sponges. They absorb knowledge, skills and values from everything and everyone around them. This year, more than 464 kids learned foundational skills while building healthy relationships and self-reliance in our Y’s Child Care Program. We believe these are vital building blocks for quality of life andfuture success.

CHANGING LIVES THROUGH YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

At the Y, we know that healthy lifestyles are achieved through nurturing spirit, mind and body, and that well-being and fitness goes beyond just working out. The Y brings families together, encourages positive habits and cultivates connections to encourage all aspects of healthy living.

Last year, the Y continued its focus on programs for healthy living. In fact, 26,713 children, adults and seniors benefitted from the motivation given by our staff, quality programming, camaraderie of fellow members and a supportive community that is unique and can only be found at the YMCA.

At our YMCA, we are committed to improving our community’s health and wellness. Our Y offered 197 different land and aquatic group fitness classes per week, specifically created for youth, adults and seniors. Individuals participated in these wellness classes 153,660 times throughout 2015.

CHANGING LIVES THROUGH HEALTHY LIVING

Our community is strongest when we all succeed. With a focus on social responsibility, the Y gives people the opportunity to serve others through volunteer projects, philanthropy and partnerships with other local organizations.

We count on the generosity of our members and partners to keep our doors open to everyone, regardless of age, income or background. Last year, our Y provided $326,272 in assistance to 2,107 members and program participants. Gifts to our Annual Strong Kids Campaign help young people achieve their potential, empower people of all ages to lead healthier lives and strengthen the bonds of community.

Volunteers make a difference. When neighbors help neighbors, everyone takes an active role in bringing about meaningful change in our community. We are grateful to the 529 program and policy volunteers who invested their time, talent and treasure to make a difference in the lives of so many.

I would like to start off by thanking the YMCA and ALL contributors to the Strong Kids Campaign. As a single mother receiving disability benefits, it is a struggle every month to make sure we have what we need and the bills are paid. With the economy getting more and more expensive, my mother (a disabled widow) and I had moved into an apartment together with my 9 year old son so we could help each other, since we both live on a fixed income. By doing this I’m now able to afford some after school activities for my son, Dominic. This is his first year in public school; he’s in the second grade now, but was home schooled for a few years due to severe anxiety. We have managed to overcome a lot this year with him and he’s really into eating healthy and exercising since he learned how important it is to stay in shape. I couldn’t think of anything better than signing up for the YMCA family pass for all three of us (considering his birthday is in April it would be the perfect gift). He will be so grateful to be able to swim. Most of all, I can afford to sign him up for several sports activities-THANKS TO YOU! We are so thrilled and overly grateful for your funding, which makes it possible for families like us to be able to keep our kids “off the streets” and busy doing healthy activities while having fun. I’d personally like to thank everyone for also allowing me to see the smile on my son’s face when he finds out he has a membership and can go everyday if he would like! THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your contributions to the Strong Kids Campaign which has made this possible!!!!

Sincerely,Amber S.
