The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church . Its message is based on the Bible . Its ministry is motivated by the love of God . Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination .

Chairman’s Let ter

Dear Army Friends:

The Salvation Army of Greater Houston achieved great progress and significant milestones in 2011 . The past year saw improvements in fundraising, enhanced provision of services and an increased pace of construction associated with our Giving for Living Capital Campaign, and these positive trends are continuing in 2012 . The year’s achievements are a testament to the Army’s officers, employees and volunteers and their commitment to serving those in the greatest need .

There were many highlights during the past year . Among them:

n Opening the Garden City Boys & Girls Club. Last summer we moved from temporary quarters within a housing project to a new community center that increases the capacity of children we serve from 80 to 300 .

n Sally’s House Groundbreaking. We broke ground on the building expansion of Sally’s House, a transitional living facility for troubled women recovering from addiction, homelessness and incarceration . Our new facility will better support existing programs and for the first time will accommodate women who need a hot meal and a safe place to spend a night .

n The International Corps. We are well on our way to completing the fundraising for our new International Corps, the fastest growing corps in the country and among the largest in the United States . Located in southwest Houston, International Corps will be a showcase for the Army with 30,000 square feet of space on 10 acres serving 23 different nationalities . Among the services we will offer are child care, tutoring, a food pantry, job training, English language classes, and senior social events .

These developments have come on top of our ongoing provision of important social services and programs at 17 locations in the greater Houston area .

We could not undertake these activities without the support of a wide array of friends . Our committed board of advisors devotes countless hours and substantial financial resources to the Army . The Women’s Auxiliary, launched only a few years ago, has won national honors and made so many of our programs possible . The Army’s officers, the leaders of the Army, work for wages that would put them below the poverty level in many parts of the country to enable more donated money to go to the needy . And, of course, we could not perform our mission without the generous donations of the many listed at the back of this report .

The Salvation Army has been called America’s most trusted charity . From thousands who give modestly to large donors who make transformational gifts, the Army has won trust by delivering efficient and effective care to our poorest through Christian faith . The trust shown in the Army is a remarkable responsibility, and we work to maintain that trust every day . Thank you for your continued generous support of The Salvation Army .

Commander ’s Let ter

Dear Friends:

As I look back at The Salvation Army Greater Houston Command’s achievements from the past year and look forward to the many promising new developments on the horizon, I am reminded of a recent trip to my home state of Alabama .

Visiting the home where we grew up, my brother and I reminisced about the years we spent there . Both of us were struck by how much had changed . The most vivid reminder of this was not a person or place, but a tree . My brother and I had planted this tree together when we were children . Over the years, we had watched it grow, but as time progressed and we moved on with our lives, we had forgotten about it . More than 40 years later, we marveled at that beautiful tree, which was now skyscraping above our heads .

During the visit, my brother and I learned that much of our old neighborhood would soon be torn down to make room for a new community center . Our beloved tree might have to be sacrificed, as well . My first reaction was sadness and shock . I could not believe this would be the last time my brother and I had the chance to visit our old home as we remembered it . But as I thought about what that community really needed, and reflected on how The Salvation Army has grown and changed over the years, I realized that the community center was not an end, but a wonder-ful new beginning .

As Area Commander for The Salvation Army in the Greater Houston region, I have seen extraordinary growth in our programs and services over the years . To extend the tree metaphor, seedlings that we planted years ago have gone on to flourish, and their roots run deep . I have also had the deep satisfaction of witnessing first-hand how our clients’ lives are transformed as a result of what we do . I have seen young people like Terranye Overshown and B .J . Robinson grow up in our Boys & Girls Clubs, changing from playful children into responsible young adults, full of promise . I have seen men and women like Elijah Propher and Loretta Ray find their salvation and rehabilitation at our residential treatment facilities . I have seen hundreds of seniors whose lives are enriched every day by the opportunity to come to our community centers to socialize and connect with one another .

Through all of the growth and change over the years, The Salvation Army remains a beacon of stability and hope throughout the greater Houston community . Thank you for helping us continue to grow and flourish, and please join us in celebrating the life-changing impact of our programs and services .

n Youth of the Year Program provides scholarship opportunities to teens in our Boys & Girls Clubs .

n Upward Bound helps low income and first- generation students succeed in high school and go on to college . Students receive academic and career advising, financial aid, a five-week summer program at Rice University, college field trips, and help with college entrance requirements .

Life Lessons

Hursel James “BJ” Robinson IV, a senior at HISD’s Barbara Jordan High School, says: “Joining the Boys & Girls Club is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made .”

Growing up, BJ’s home life was challenging . His father was abusive, and his home life was fractured . At age 12, BJ was playing with his brother and best friend one day when bullets began flying . BJ’s friend died in his arms – a life-changing experience .

“The Boys & Girls Club gave me a safe place to be a kid,” BJ reflects . Through the club, he developed a stronger faith in God and had access to positive role models . Volunteering increased his self-esteem and leadership skills . These experiences made him see that his dream of going to college was achievable . After graduating from high school, BJ plans to attend the University of Houston .

n The Salvation Army provides assistance with rent, mortgage, utilities, and prescriptions to those in need .

n Close collaboration with our partner organizations ensures that our clients’ needs are met .

n Caseworkers focus not only on the immediate need, but also underlying causes of instability .

n Vouchers for emergency food aid, clothing, household items, eyeglasses and eye exams, gas and transportation are also available .

n For young people and adults who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, safe housing is the top priority .

Young Adults and Social Services

Life Lessons

Like many young homeless adults, Charlie and Nicki ended up on the streets after becoming estranged from their families . Charlie had been in foster care and never met his father . Nicki was kicked out of her house as a teenager . Neither had completed high school .

Seeking escape from their bleak situation, both Charlie and Nicki turned to drugs, and at night, they sought refuge in city parks . When they grew tired of living on the streets, they reached out to The Salvation Army . After placing the young couple in safe housing, our caseworkers helped them address the complex issues that had caused them to live on the streets . Charlie and Nicki began receiving regular medical care, regained healthy contact with their families, and are taking steps to earn GEDs .

Committed to helping other young adults transition out of homelessness, the two now volunteer at a youth drop-in center . Charlie and Nicki’s story is just one more example of The Salvation Army’s transformative impact .

Services

On any given night, more than 700 homeless adults, children, and families find safe shelter at one of The Salvation Army’s five transitional living/rehabilitation and shelter facilities:

n Sally’s House, in downtown Houston, is a transitional living facility for women .

n The Harbor Light Center, in near north Houston, provides long-term alcohol and drug rehabilitation services to adult men .

n The Conroe shelter, in Montgomery County, provides the only shelter program of its kind for homeless men and women in the area .

n The Adult Rehabilitation Center, just west of downtown Houston, is a residential treatment program for adult men .

n The Family Residence, in Midtown, provides shelter and life rehabilitation services to homeless women with families .

Life Lessons

Sally’s House is a transitional living facility for single homeless women, all of whom are “clean” from alcohol/drugs for at least 30 days prior to being accepted in the rehabilitation program . Over time, it became apparent that there were other unmet needs to be addressed . “On any given night, there are dozens of homeless women sleeping on the streets just a few blocks away from Sally’s House . We knew we needed to do something,” recalled Major Chris Flanagan .

Major Flanagan and The Salvation Army Advisory Board decided that the services at Sally’s House should be expanded to add temporary shelter for transient homeless women . Upon arrival, each woman receives clean clothes, a hot meal, access to shower facilities, and a clean bed . In the morning, before they leave, they receive another hot meal – along with information about rehabilitation services at Sally’s House .

The new program has been a great success . This new expansion will allow Sally’s House to more than double their daily service capacity for local transient homeless women . Furthermore, exposure to the rehabilitation program is changing lives: a dozen transient women have registered for the program and begun the journey of recovery .

Services

n We preserve and enhance the dignity and independence of older adults by providing them with safe, quality housing at our two apartment complexes: Evangeline Booth Garden Apartments and William Booth Garden Apartments.

n Our four community centers – Aldine West-field, Conroe, Temple, and Pasadena – offer a wide variety of programs for seniors in a safe and supportive environment . These include social activities, physical fitness opportunities, continuing education classes, free health fairs and information, and monthly field trips .

n Transportation to and from some facilities is provided for seniors who cannot drive .

n Some facilities serve breakfast and lunch to seniors every weekday, ensuring that they have regular access to healthy meals .

n If a senior’s needs are not being met, The Salvation Army begins case management to connect them with existing resources to ensure that they are well cared for .

n We also travel to homes, nursing homes, and hospitals to visit and provide comfort to seniors suffering from illness .

Life Lessons

Irma Sturm moved to the William Booth Garden Apartments shortly after losing her husband in the early 1990s . With no family nearby, The Salvation Army has become the heart of Irma’s life . Six days a week, she walks one block to our Temple Corps Community Center to participate in activities with dozens of other seniors and to attend church on Sundays . Irma says: “The Salvation Army has been such a blessing for me!”

Like Irma, most of the apartment complex’s residents are retired long-time residents of Northside Village . In order to stay in the neighborhood they know and trust, many older residents are giving their homes to their children and moving into the William Booth Gardens Apartments . Demand for the 64 units is so high that there is a two-year wait list .

The Women’s Auxiliary is one of the volunteer, educational and fundraising arms of the Greater Houston Area Command . The Auxiliary sponsors initiatives that enrich the lives of Houston citizens by meeting them at their point of need . These initiatives include:

n Angel Tree, a program providing clothing and toys for children and senior citizens at Christmas .

n Six Boys & Girls Clubs, providing character development, educational opportunities and musical training through education and recreational programs .

n Family Residence, a residential facility with programs designed to transition homeless women and families back into the community .

n Sally’s House, a transitional residential facility with programs serving single homeless women as they strive to live effectively without drugs and alcohol .

n Reflections on Style Runway Show, Luncheon and Chic Boutique, an annual spring fundraising event .

n Funding for a variety of Greater Houston Area Command projects .

The wonderful women of the Women’s Auxiliary rarely take center stage, preferring instead to work diligently behind the scenes . Their dedication and commitment have not gone unnoticed . Last year, in fact, they were recognized as the top Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary in the country .

We are blessed to receive support from the United Way of Greater Houston, along with generous corporate sponsors, through the National Volunteer Week and Days of Caring initiatives . These initiatives – combined with the hundreds of volunteers who turn out every year to help sort and package Christmas gifts at the Angel Tree Secret Santa Warehouse – generate a total of 141,373 volunteer hours for The Salvation Army .

“This support is invaluable to a nonprofit organization like The Salvation Army . Every volunteer hour translates to one less person we have to hire, one less hour of overtime we have to pay, one more hour of dedication that our staff can commit to other projects,” says Joe Scharnberg, chief financial officer for The Salvation Army Greater Houston Area Command . “It’s a way of providing support that truly benefits our bottom line .”

That support allows The Salvation Army in the Greater Houston region to dedicate 88 .4 cents of every dollar to programs and services .

The Salvation Army Greater Houston Area Command holds a number of events throughout the year .

n Our largest fundraising event of the year, the Annual Luncheon, features a selected guest speaker and supports an array of programs and services .

n Youth of the Year Scholarship Award, provides scholarships to youth who participate in our Boys & Girls Clubs across the Greater Houston region .

n Through various activities held throughout National Salvation Army Week, we seek to raise awareness of our programs and services throughout the local community .

n National Volunteer Week recognizes and affirms the importance of the volunteers who help us throughout the year .

n The annual Women’s Auxiliary Reflections on Style Runway Show, Luncheon and Chic Boutique features donated designer accessories and clothing as part of the Women’s Auxiliary largest fundraising event of the year . All proceeds benefit local Salvation Army programs .

n The Harbor Light Choir and local Boys & Girls Clubs members participate in the annual H .E .B . Thanksgiving Day Parade .

n Shortly after Thanksgiving, our busy Christmas season begins with The Red Kettle Kickoff at Tiffany & Co ., in the Galleria . We also benefit from the KHOU 11 Secret Santa Toy Drive, a partnership with Randalls, IHOP, Conn’s and Meineke Car Care Centers . PODS Houston also serves as the Salvation Army’s official Santa’s Sleigh during the holiday season .
