CHANGING THE STORY

ldquoI was out of my mind and barely spoke mainlyusing hand and arm signalsrdquo That is how Ma aMarine combat Veteran firefighter and PTSDsufferer described himself when he arrived atCamp Hope in 2015 He was jobless wordless andbasically hopeless While in our program with fellow combatVeterans things began to change Words began toflow again he was able to serve as a volunteerfirefighter with a nearby department and hopewas restored One year after returning to his home he was hiredby his local department as a full- me firefighter ndasha dream once doubted had been fulfilled Andnow five years later Ma has been promoted tothe posi on of ldquoCaptainrdquo That simply describeshis professional life but he con nued as he wroteto his Camp Hope ldquobrothersrdquo ldquoFamily life is greatand I owe a lot to Camp Hope for helping me getto where I am today When you hear any par cular month is somecertain ldquoawareness monthrdquo we usually think loss of life For instance June is ldquoPTSDAwareness Monthrdquo People tend to think of the 20+ daily suicides in the Veterancommunity alone not to men on first responders law enforcement and the countlessother forms of trauma that can lead to post-trauma c stress Certainly we are workingfeverishly to lower that number but our mission is more complex Ma wrote these words as a ldquothank yourdquo When I asked his permission to share this withyou he gladly responded and desired it to bring hope to ldquothe guysrdquo No doubt it doesinspire hope to those who are currently trying to change their own story I share it and wish to express our gratitude for your support of this great cause When you

volunteer when you bring food and household items for our residents when you shopusing Amazon Smile or donate a vehicle to make a financial investment in this missionyou are ensuring this program this community this safe place is here for the nextVeteran that comes in without a home without a family without a brotherhood withouta job without hope Together we provide the opportunity to do much more than changesome sta s cs We are providing Americarsquos combat Veterans and their familieseverything they need to completely create a new and positive trajectory for their lives
