“I want to be an architect like you!”

Although five years have passed, I still remember these words from a 7-year old boy, who lived in a cramped attic with a huge family. With no sewer pipe and no lavatory, a smell of decayed wood pervaded the whole room. The boy treated me as an expe-rienced architect even though I was just a sophomore student in architecture, assisting tutor with some housing-problem research.

His words planted a seed within me, which bloomed to the belief that architects have the power to make life better. This belief was so deeply embedded in my life that it became the very momentum for me to devote all my heart to architecture.

There’s an old Chinese saying known to many – “Small-time hermits hide in the mountains, but the real hermit lives down-town.” It means that those living alone in the mountains could manage to evade the world, but the truly successful recluse is the one who functions in this material world and yet rises above all world.

GRID AND MODULAR

The cityhermit’s house holds its own principles: a grid in the modular of 3m, for 3m is a suitable height be-tween two floor in a house as well as a suitable width of a single room.

PROGRAM ORGANIZATION

The division of the plan begins from a private core. Then a water pool is designed to represent the corona of the core with the other nodes of the house made around it.

FUNCTION & AREA

The area distribution of the house is on the basis of its functions. Since almost all the functions are for-med in the grid and modular, they can be arraged in an arith-metical serial.

BLOCK DECOMPOSED ANALYSIS

A classified table is made to gather the considerations from different views, say,daylighting, scenary, ventila-tion and other suitable settings.

This Mingsheng Industrial Zone Re-newal Program is aimed at the em-bracing city life into the old factory and pier. In this particular warehouse, I take advantage of its former frame construction and re-arrange the space between this frame to create a brand-new space experience within.

This Mingsheng Industrial Zone Renewal Program is aimed at the embracing city life into the old factory and pier. I prefer pedes-trian system and use layers to form a system which combines walking, shopping and out-door entertainments in this case.

C O N C E P TWe discover that when an object fall into the liquid or half-liquid, some de-pressed space will gener-ate. Inner the liquid, there are bubbble space. Then we make a comparison: if we cover the site com-pletely with something like liquid or half-liquid, near the place where lays the buildings.

NEW ORLEANSMEGASWARM

New Orleans is a city in danger of flood. Our pro-tocol of megastructure begins from the octahe-dron crystal system which attaches to each other with the overlaying edges or vertexes, forming a section-based crystal system. It consist of levee, bridge and living pods.

HETEROGENEOUS SYSTEMS

1. LEVEE SYSTEMWe study the water force of the Mississippi River and draw out the plan and section diagram to withstand the push force and increase the pull and drag force when confronting the flood challenge. Also we design some porous holes in the underwater units to increase the water turbulence.

2. BRIDGE SYSTEMOur site has an original twin bridge which connects the uptown and the outside city. We get the purpose to replace the bridge with our crystal system. The new bridge system would have extended functions like commerce, tourist, which also become a landmark of New Orlean.

3. MEGASTRUCTURE SYSTEMBy rearranging the crystal system, we give birth to some megastructure parts in our protocol, which bears the sense of city weaving and function overlaying, like hotel, dwelling, restaurant, conventional center.

4. PLUG-IN CITYThe crystal system serves as further development plug-in structure.

O C T A H E D R O NCRYSTAL SYSTEM

We study a crystal system, which is a series of point groups. Two point groups are placed in the same crystal system if the sets of possible lattice systems of their space groups are the same. For many point groups there is only one possible lattice system, and in these cases the crystal system corresponds to a lattice system and is given the same name.

Based on the single octahedron crystal system, we create differ-ent forms of units by merging the overlaying edges or vertexes , rotating, distorting, arraying, for different functions provided by this megastucture.

The levee units are long, narrow and flat, for more water turbu-lence, while the living pod units are more smooth which looks like mushrooms for the daily liv-ing utilities.

Young City is a new urban design aimed at attracting young people back to the down-town Houston with the new development of affordable housing and entertainment and education facility for young people to reacti-vate this area and provide the new opportu-nity to influence and activate the surround-ing downtown area.

The Young City proposal em-phasizes the city green system linkage to reactivate the city. It rebuilds the riverside landscapesystem and relink the water side green system of Houston down-town together. It also proposal strengthens the connection and convenient communiting to the city and in the site itself.

NIGHT CLUB IN TOKYO

Located in Aoyama, Tokyo, this night club is designed based on our research into Tokyo’s robotic and cyberpunk culture as an inspira-tion for sci-fictional and mechanical interior theme.

The project creates different psychedelic in-terior spaces as well as sci-fictional appear-ance for a cultural night club. It represents Tokyo as metaphor. This is a mega city that represents hypermodernism in all its dimen-sions, from hyper-technology to individual alienation to the explosion of urbanization since 1990s. It is an urban club as an urban fair tale to Tokyo’s psychedelic urban situ-ation: a mega-city in which its realities are more or less intentionally detached.

Due to the exploring and psychedelic atmosphere we want to display in the interior design, we create different types of mechanical tunnels, which can be used as corridors and ceiling for Stereos in contrast of huge chunk-like struc-ture.

SECTION B-BIn the night club, we design two main space for different customers and their needs-one is the Heavy Metal Music Bar on the under-ground floor, the other is Ball Room on the top floor.

The Heavy Metal Music Bar plays hard rock music which is loud and aggressive. The main aimed cus-tomers are those youth who are fond of Punk and other sub-culture music. The geometry in it are quite sharp and bladed-like and the light is cold blue which demonstrates the atmosphere in it.

The Ball Room has vivid colors and bizarre patterns associated with psychedelic states. The dazzling spot lights on the ceilings are fierce red to create psychedelic feelings.

Meanwhile, it is not merely a design for the youth in Tokyo, which also bears a display of the robotic and cyberpunk culture of Tokyo. As a matter of fact, Tokyo represents hyper-modernism in all its dimensions, from advanced technology to individual alienation, even to urbanization run amok, which we want to demonstrate in our night club design.
