Your very dedicated District Board met via teleconference on January 28. The highlights are included in this issue. Since this issue will be my last issue as Governor, I want to take the space to thank the Board for working hard to make our District shine! The Board meeting was a bit later than our normal date. This allowed me to have a successful hip replacement on January 13. Friday the 13th was a good day!

The District Board and the International visitor, Diane Eberhard, will meet at the Pre-Conference Board meeting on Thursday, April 27. The newly elected Board will also meet Sunday morning, April 30, for a few hours for the Post-Conference Board meeting.

Thank you for all you do for your Club, your communities, and your world. Each one of you is an important cog in our Altrusa wheel. We cannot do it without YOU!

A Special Thank You!Since I became Governor in May 2015, Arlene Roth has been by my side (virtually) as editor of our Channel Seven. She makes the information I give her for the Channel Seven look and read amazing. Arlene has taken my very rough writings and made them logical and readable.

As I read the District Service Bulletins, DSBs as they are called, from other Districts, I see how ours is a shining example of a clear, readable, and professional newsletter.

And now I learn that Arlene has consented to continue serving as editor of the Channel Seven for Governor-Elect Jolene! District Seven will benefit from Arlene’s talent for another two years.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Arlene.

Sincerely, Judi Lundstrom

Diane’s Statement

Altrusa has been one of the strongest, most positive forces I have had in my life. The excitement that comes from members who have found that perfect bit of service they can do – that perfect marriage between service given and service received, that fills your servant’s heart, is like nothing else. It’s the best recruitment tool we have – being excited about service and telling everyone about it. Who doesn’t want to be part of something great? Altrusa has given me so much more than I could ever repay in leadership skills, travels – near and far and life-long friends.

I am committed to Altrusa, its continued strides toward unity, greater recognition and growth. Several years ago Leanne Milligan, our current International President Elect, included in her statement on Altrusa a quote from Leo Rosten, “I cannot believe that the purpose of life is to be

Friday Group Service Project: Literacy in Our Communities

Altrusa International of Iowa City, Inc. regularly partners with local non-profits to leverage our shared resources. Books are almost always included in the service projects we do. When we donated purses to residents at the Domestic Violence Intervention Project, we filled them with adult and children’s books. We have contributed books to Little Free Libraries throughout our community. We have also gathered books for the Annual Book Sale at Shelter House, the local homeless shelter.

Our service project for this Conference is to ask each attendee to bring at least one book to donate

Books may be dropped off in the ballroom at the Coralville Marriott Hotel beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, and throughout the day on Friday. We look forward to watching these donations grow throughout the conference.

Thank you in advance for supporting this important service project, which highlights Altrusa’s deep connection to literacy throughout its first 100 years!

Be sure to visit the Iowa Writers Library adjacent to the main lobby of the Coralville Marriott. This collection, maintained by the Coralville Public Library, contains 800 works by former students, graduates, and faculty of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Jo Beers Pie Contest and Auction – The First 10 Years

Apple pie, cherry pie, peach and blueberry … Altrusa International of Iowa City will be selling Jo Beers Pie Contest & Auction: The First 10 Years cookbooks during the District Seven conference. This cookbook brings together more than 500 recipes submitted to this annual pie contest. Jo Beers was a 65-year member of the Iowa City Altrusa club and worked for the local newspaper for 67 years, where she also wrote a weekly food column for the last 20 years of her employment. In 1999, the Iowa City club celebrated Jo’s 60th anniversary of Altrusa membership and named its college scholarship fund after her. In 2007, the club partnered with the Johnson County Agriculture Association to host a pie contest and auction in Jo’s name during the annual Johnson County 4-H Fair. Proceeds from the event have helped grow the scholarship fund, and cookbook sales will further add to the established endowment fund. Books will be available at the conference for $25.00, payable by cash or checks written to the Community Foundation of Johnson County.

Club Displays:
