Later, however, it became a Christian holiday named after a Christian priest. According to one church tradition St. Valentine was a priest near Rome about the year 270 A.D. At that time the Roman Emperor was imprisoning Christians for not worshipping the Roman gods. During this persecu- tion Valentine was arrested. Some say he was arrested because he was performing Christian marriages, but others say it was for helping Christians escape prison. During the trial they asked Valentine what he thought of the Roman gods Jupiter and Mercury. Of course Valentine said they were false gods and that the God that Jesus called Father was the only true God. So the Romans threw him in prison for insulting the gods. While in prison Valentine continued to minister. He witnessed to the guards. One of the guards was a good man who had adopted a blind girl. He asked Valentine if his God could help his daughter. Valentine prayed and the girl was given her sight. The guard and his whole family, 46 people, believed in Jesus and were baptized. When the emperor heard about this, he was furious that Valentine was still making converts even in prison, so he had Valentine clubbed and beheaded. Valentine knew that he might get caught in his Christian activities. He knew that if he told the court the truth about the Roman gods that he would be thrown in prison. And he knew that if he continued to witness to Christ in the prison he would make his captors angry. But he continued because he loved the Lord and his fellow humans. He was willing to risk his life to free the prisoners and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to those who needed to hear it. As Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." This is what Valentine did. He loved and cared enough for his friends and loved ones (including his jailors) to introduce them to Jesus at the risk of his life, which he gave. And this is what God did for us. While we were still sinners Jesus died for us. So on this Valentine's Day let us be quick to express our love, not only to our loved ones and friends, but also especially to the Jesus who gave his life so that we would be able to have our sins forgiven and live in peace with God, others and all of creation. 9 am 9 am 9 am 9 am 11 am 11 am 11 am 11 am Sunday Sunday Sunday Sunday School School School School 6th 6th 6th 6th 75 53 62 13th 13th 13th 13th 58 40 130 20th 20th 20th 20th 80 53 N/A 27th 27th 27th 27th BE HERE! Today’s Concerns, Thank you for your thoughtfulness for including Otterbein on your Christmas list.

Charles Follmer Director

Thank you for your donations to the Otterbein Food Pantry. It is very much appreciat-ed. It will enable us to help many area families.

Charles Follmer Director

Imagine that no volunteers showed up for their responsibilities next Sunday morning. The pastor would still proclaim God’s Word. You might have a staff professional to play a keyboard, leading you in singing God’s praise (but probably not a praise band or choir). It might be hard to find a service folder or bulletin as you arrived, and as you left, you might have to look for a way to leave your offering. It’s likely children’s programs and other opportunities for Christian education would need to be cancelled. And you probably wouldn’t have coffee to sip or munchies to share.

WRITE IT DOWN!WRITE IT DOWN!WRITE IT DOWN!WRITE IT DOWN!

An 80-year-old couple was worried because they kept forgetting things all the time. The doctor assured them there was nothing seriously wrong except old age, and suggested they carry a notebook and write things down

so they wouldn't forget.

Several days later, the old man got up to go to the kitchen. His wife said, "Dear, get me a bowl of ice cream while you're up." "Okay," he said. "...and put some chocolate syrup on it and a few cherries, too," she added. "You'd better write all this down." "I won't forget!"

he said.

Twenty minutes later he came back into the room and handed his wife a plate of scram-bled eggs and bacon. She glared at him. "Now, I told you to write it down! I knew you'd forget." "What did I forget?" he asked. She replied, "My toast!"

Paul’s words in Romans 12:1:

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of

worship.

Paul calls us to give our entire selves and all we say, do, and think, to God in response to his mercy. Doing that is worship. Paul’s words give us a new way to view the many volunteers who serve in our church. These people come, not only to worship, but also to serve. They’re a physical reminder, a picture of the truth that worship and service go hand in hand, all day, every day. So to all of you who volunteer, whether you fold bulletins, play an instrument, usher, sing, greet, or clean up doughnut crumbs and coffee grounds after everyone leaves, thank you! If you teach or un-lock the doors, thank you! If you count the offering or straighten the chairs, thank you! Whatever your service, thank you for adding service to your worship. Thank you for worshiping by serving!

Due to recent budget cuts, we are now seeking some kid friendly volunteers to help out in our church nursery each Sunday. A sign up schedule will be posted just outside the nursery for those who are willing to help out with this important ministry. It is important to remember that when you serve in the nursery, you are being entrusted with the most important members of our church family. "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of

God belongs to such as these.” (Luke 18:16)

Your help in the church nursery will allow young parents attending church to focus on worship rather than worrying about their children. Please contact the church office @ 431-4240 or [email protected] to schedule a date and time when you will be able to help. (Volunteers will need to have gone through the Safe &

Sacred Spaces Training or be willing to attend a session.)
