standards of conduct or expectations of a group or society.

• Example: Alcoholics, gamblers & mentally ill are considered as deviants. Being late for class is considered as deviant act. On the basis of the sociological definition, we are all deviant from time to time. Each of us violates common social norms in certain situations.

• Deviance is a comprehensive concept that includes not only criminal behavior, but also many actions that are not subject to prosecution.

• In most instances, those individuals and groups with the greatest status and power define what is acceptable and what is Deviant.

• For example, despite serious medical warnings against the dangers of tobacco, cigarette smoking continued, because of the power of tobacco farmers and cigarette manufacturers. Only after a long campaign led by public health and anticancer activities, smoking cigarette became a deviant activity. Today many state and local laws limit where people can smoke.

• Deviance can include relatively minor day to day decisions about our personal behavior, in some cases it can become part of a person’s identity. This process is called stigmatization (Social Stigma).

• Once people have been assigned a deviant role, they have trouble presenting a positive image to others and many even experience lowered self-esteem. For example a whole group of short people may be labeled in this way.

• Stigma describes the labels that society uses to devalue members of certain social groups.

• A preplanned crime committed by a group is called organized crime. The group regulates relations among criminal enterprises. Organized crime dominates the world of illegal business. It serves as a means of upward mobility for groups of people who struggle to escape poverty.
