KELLY S KORN ERThere are three mega-festivals celebrated in the Christian calendar.

    1. Christmas 2. EasterDo you know the 3rd festival? PentecostPentecost is the great festival that marks the birth of the Christianchurch by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost means fiftieth dayand is celebrated fifty days after Easter.

What happened on Pentecost? Ten days after Jesus ascended intoheaven, the twelve apostles, Jesus mother and family, and many otherof His disciples gathered together in Jerusalem for the Jewish harvestfestival that was celebrated on the fiftieth day after Passover. While theywere indoors praying, a sound like that of a rushing wind filled the houseand tongues of fire descended and rested over each of their heads. Thiswas the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on human flesh promised by Godthrough the prophet Joel (Joel 2:28-29). The disciples were suddenlyempowered to proclaim the gospel of the risen Christ. They went outinto the streets of Jerusalem and began preaching to the crowdsgathered for the festival. Not only did the disciples preach withboldness and vigor, but by a miracle of the Holy Spirit they spoke in thenative languages of the people present, many who had come from allcorners of the Roman Empire. This created a sensation. The apostlePeter seized the moment and addressed the crowd, preaching to themabout Jesus death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins. Theresult was that about three thousand converts were baptized that day(Acts 2:1-41).

What is the color of Pentecost? RED is the liturgical color for thisday. Red recalls the tongues of flame in which the Holy Spiritdescended on the first Pentecost. The color red also reminds us of theblood of the martyrs. These are the believers of every generation whoby the power of the Holy Spirit hold firm to the true faith even at the costof their lives.

Pentecost 2013 is May 19. Lets celebrate this very special Sunday!

    1. Praise music marked by the words Spirit and Holy2. Encourage all to wear RED!3. Any other ideas you may want to include!

    See you soon!Pastor Dean

    Going Fishing

Pastor Dean passionately shared that our job as Easter people isto 1) go fishing and 2) fish off the right side. Our job, duty, calling, work,

trade, or whatever (as a Christian) is to FISH. We cannot neglect our

duty and the command of Jesus upon His departure from earth when he

said, Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in

the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, andteaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I

am with you always, to the very end of the age. Friends, this was not a passive request from the Lord to do it ifyou feel like it, do it if you have time, do it if you want to, etc Not so.

This was a command. It is called the Great Commission, not the great

omission. Our culture has polluted the role of the Christian when it

comes to fishing and Christians have basically succumbed to the

pressure of I dont want to fish in anyone elses fishing hole; I dont

have the right bait; I dont know what hook to use; and the list goes on.

Pastor Dean eloquently stated the simple truth This is a COMMAND of

Jesus; it is not a choice for the Christian but a mandate for each and

    every one of us.

The second point is fish off the right side. Again, Pastorcompletely cited traditional mentality of the Christian culture. The

phrase we have never done this before resounds truth to many of us.

It is easy to get captured in the comforts of what is comfortable, warm,

safe, secure, etc yet the command of Jesus is to do a new thing. God,

in his finite wisdom, knows that we will stumble, we will doubt, we will

question, we will, we will. Yet, in the midst of this, He is faithful when

we lack faith; He is our hope when we are hopeless; He is our Mighty

Lighthouse when we are lost. When we trust Jesus and fully put our

lives into His hands, he takes us to deeper waters. We might say, this is

not the right time; I dont know the right things to say; I am not

living a right life. But Jesus is not looking for someone to have it all

together; He is looking for the right hearted person who is available

right now to be mentored, coached and be taught to go fish right away

and do it on the right side. Sadly, United Methodists, as a whole, are not good at fishing. Wehave many fishing videos; we have written books on how to fish; Bible

studies have been written with steps on how to find the right bait; how

to hook the big fish and the list goes on. According to the Barna group, a

poll showed that United Methodists share their faith to one person once

every 31 years. Too many in the church believe that enough people

with the same opinion equals truth but that is not a living faith that is

built on the Holy Bible and revolve around Jesus. Many church leaders

are finding a new Bible within the old Bible. I will stick to the old

    Bible and its teachings.

Chapel Church, we have been set apart for a great awakening ofGod. As we review our Easter people job description, get ready to dothat which God is asking from you. Are you ready to go fishing? Go fish

    on the right side.

    Ready to catch a fish,

    Paul Daniel

REPORT FROM THE CAYO DEAF INSTITUTE IN BELIZESarah and I have been serving at the Cayo Deaf Institute in Belize since we arrived on March 23. Because of

my recovery from heart surgery in December, we are here in Belize for only a month this year and will return to Iowa onApril 23.

The students had been taken home for their two week Easter break just before we arrived so we found thecampus unusually quiet. Our house had been very well cared for by the staff and students with everything in its place,

the towels all neatly folded and the bed freshly made up. That care is a real blessing for us.During the first week, Sarah was quite ill and we made several trips to the local Seventh Day Adventist mission

hospital to care for her. She is doing much better now and we appreciate your prayers for her health. During the timethe students were gone, I worked on some maintenance around the house and grounds, installed shelving in a staffdormitory we are remodeling and met with the leader of a short term mission organization to finalize plans for therenovation of a student dormitory. I drove to the far south of Belize on April 9 to collect six deaf students from that area

for the start of school on April 10.

I always appreciate the chance to have a better understanding of the students byvisiting their homes and meeting their families. Some come from stable home situations and some do not.

On the school farm the staff and students are milking 8 cows, feeding 300 broilers, and caring for 30 head ofcattle, 5 pigs and about 30 sheep. They are also preparing the gardens for planting when the rainy season begins. Thestaff all worked together to butcher a steer this week.

While we are in Belize we attend the deaf church here on the school grounds or one of the five local Germanspeaking Mennonite churches which sponsor the deaf school. These churches have a delightful custom of always

inviting visitors to someones home for Sunday dinner. Our son, Doug, and his family came for a week-long visit which was filled with getting to know the school andfellowship in the local community.

The Cayo Deaf Institute is doing well right now despite problems, such as the directors wife being diagnosedwith cancer and his resignation to allow for her extensive treatments out of the country. The buildings and grounds lookthe best I have ever seen, partially due to the efforts of the Chapel mission teams over the years. The school reallyappreciates the new washing machine we were able to purchase last fall with funds left over from the recent Chapelmission team. The young staff is working in harmony and the students seem attentive and alert.

At school prayer meeting last night, the acting director reminded us that they are beginning the recruitingprocess for next years staff positions. Please pray that the needs will be met for teachers, dorm parents, cooks andother staff positions for the next year. Or consider a year or two of service yourself.Blessings,Dan Beane
