GENEROSITY AND EXCEL << Being generous is not the common trait found in Christians. It is very hard for anyone, even the most mature believer, to be generous at the level that God desires of us. Malachi 3:10 reminds us that God challenges us to test him in our giving. It is the only place in the Bible that I can find such a thing. That tells me that we are not to test God unless He invites us to do so. But when we do, God promises to open the windows of heaven and pour out His blessings on us. Generosity begins in the mind with a decision made and enters the heart as a changed position in the follower of Jesus. When Paul writes to the Corinthian church he challenges them to ―excel‖ in the grace called giving. Excel means to ―move forward‖, ―to get better at. . .‖ or to ―move to the next level.‖ Whatever that means to you, it certainly captures the essence of moving for the Lord. The Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 8:7 throws out another challenge to the followers of Jesus. He asks if they are willing to excel in many different phases of the Christian life but reminds them ―to excel in the grace of giving.‖ He asks them to be generous. Moving to the next level of giving is hard, but worth it, not just to the believer but also to the Kingdom work. As we enter the new sermon series called Generosity I believe we will see God being faithful to us and asking us to test Him. When we go beyond the tithe (a great place to start) we will see what it feels like to be generous with God‘s money. So join us as we ―excel in the grace of giving.‖ Blessings, Fred
