introduction to the three large cultures of Asia (Chinese, Indian, and Muslim) and an easy place for students to tour. Roisin McCann, Assistant Year 8/9 Coordinator, and Arlee Moss, School Officer, provided students with a busy and engaging program of sightseeing, visits – and shopping experiences. Our Middle School program of tours, outdoor education and Duke of Edinburgh Award camps, provides students with an age appropriate experience at this early adolescent stage of their development when they are really ready to explore their world. TOKYO TAMAGAWA SCHOOL TOUR IN THREE WEEKS A group of our Middle School students leave in three weeks to spend a week in Tokyo at our sister school, Tamagawa University School. This will be a great experience for our students as they will be able to learn about Japanese culture and language at first hand, and to stay with a Japanese family during the week. We hope to host more visits like this to Tokyo and Tamagawa University School in coming years as we extend our Japanese language programs at the school. SENIOR COLLEGE CAMPS AND EXPERIENCES This weekend a number of our Senior College students will be completing an outdoor education hike as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award program. For many students this will be the last requirement for them to complete their current Award program. Shaun Theiber, our Senior College Dean of Students who coordinates Senior College Duke of Edinburgh Award programs, will lead the tour. A group of Senior College students will also represent the School at an international Youth Conference in Singapore in Singapore in late October. This conference is very much a hands-on conference for senior secondary students and will provide our students with an excellent international youth leadership program. Shaun Theiber, Dean of Students, and Emma Nathan, one of new 2013 Senior College students will be working with our students at this conference that will attract students from international schools all over Asia. YEAR 12 STUDENTS Our Year 12 students have been very busy completing work and preparing for their end of year exams in coming weeks. It is a time when they may feel that they have a mountain of work to

complete before the exams are over. It is an important final stage in our Year 12 students educational journey and we encourage them to stay focussed, develop a study routine and keep to this, but allow for some breaks when they can get some exercise and relax. We are pleased with the preparation of the students and their chances of optimising their results in their exams. We wish them all the best for the remaining weeks before their exams. THANK YOU Thank you to all our teachers, office and support staff and students who have worked hard during the term. The amazing range of activities and learning experiences our Essington students have access to is incredible. This involves not only normal classroom learning experiences but the multitude of co-curriculuar activities available. All of these activities require an enormous amount of organisation and team work across our school community. Thank you also to our parents for their support with our in-class and co-curricular activities and programs. Thank you to our grounds, maintenance and cleaning staff who take pride in our school environment and work hard to keep our facilities looking so good. David Cannon Principal/CEO

From the Assistant Principals Holiday Care Program Kelly, Haji and the rest of the Holiday Care Program staff will provide yet another exciting Holiday Care Program during the upcoming October school holiday break. Please ensure that bookings are made in Week 10 to secure a spot. We have a maximum of 50 places only in the Holiday Care Program. End of Term 3 What an exciting and busy school term this has been. It is hard to believe that Term 3 is almost over and we are already getting prepared for Term 4. Preschool celebrated this in great style by hosting a ‘fancy dress party’! Have a safe and enjoyable holiday break and see you all back on Monday 8

th October.

YEARS 1–12 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Parent Teacher Discussions Thank you to all parents who were able to attend the Parent-Teacher Discussions last week. However, if you did not get a chance to meet with your child’s teacher please contact them to organise a mutually convenient time in Term 4. Term 3 concludes This will be the final newsletter for this term and I would like to thank all of the teachers, staff, students and parents for their energy, hard work and dedication over the last ten weeks. Term 3 has been an exceptionally busy term with Tournament of Minds, Junior School Swimming Program, Duke of Edinburgh camps, Middle School tours, Studies of Asia activities, Year 10 Work Experience and much more in conjunction with the exciting range of activities the teachers work hard to plan and prepare each week. I hope everyone has a very enjoyable and restful break next week and I look forward to seeing you and our new families in Term 4. Natalie Hyde Assistant Principal Years 1-12

Early Learning Notices Wow, what a busy and exciting term it has been. Week 10 was filled with fun, learning and exploration. Preschool 1 and 2 had a ‘favourite character’ dress-up day on Thursday while Preschool 3 and 4 had an in-class ‘crazy-hair disco’. All of the children had a wonderful time and it was great to see all of the hair colours and costumes worn on the day. Thank you to the following parents who have helped in class this week; William, Billy’s Mum, and Amanda,

The Essington School Darwin 2

Phoebe’s Mum from Preschool 1; Will, Lucy T’s Dad, Alexandra, Lucy M’s Mum, Rolf, William H’s Dad, John, Cooper’s Dad and Teya, Andoni’s Aunty from Preschool 2; Melanie, Oliver’s Mum, Penelope, Yaelle’s Mum, Carolina, Stella’s Mum and Tania, Bronte’s Mum from Preschool 4. Thank you also to John, Cooper’s Dad from Preschool 1 and Bethany Kelly, Joshua’s big sister from Preschool 3 for being terrific mystery readers this week. We would like to say a big thank you to all of the parents who have helped Preschool with the weekly washing over the term. This is most appreciated by the teachers and the children. Term 3 has been a big term for Preschool and school fundraisers, and we wish to thank all our Preschool families for your help and support over the term. EYLF Update Did you know? We are using The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) in our classrooms at Preschool. The EYLF is a framework that ensures each child receives quality education programs in their early childhood setting. It is a guide for early childhood educators who work with children from birth to five years. This is a vital time for them to learn and develop. The Framework’s vision is for all children to experience play-based learning that is engaging and builds success for life. In each newsletter we will include an update on the Early Years Learning Framework or for more information please visit www.deewr.gov.au/early childhood.

Miss Rhiannon and Miss Christine Pre-Transition T2 Cendo Term 3 is almost over! It has gone so fast. Thank you to our wonderful parents for a lovely term. I wish you all a happy and safe short break.

A very big well done to my class last week for an amazing effort with their assembly item. The children looked great and were real groovers. The ‘wombat waddle’ was definitely a hit with the kids.

Pre-Transition T3 Hardiman In Transition T3 this week we have been continuing our intensive swimming program at Nightcliff Pool in the mornings and have really been enjoying ourselves. I have been very impressed by how well everyone has been behaving for the swimming instructors, as well as how those who were a little bit nervous about being in

the water are becoming more confident in their water safety skills. Well done everyone! Also, a big thank-you to all the parents who have come along to the pool to support the students, as well as coming back to the class after the lessons to support me (helping twenty three hungry five year olds to get dressed can be quite chaotic) ! We have finally finished all the sounds in the Jolly Phonics Program and are now reviewing what we have learnt. In Maths this week we have been reviewing all of the concepts we have been focusing on this term and pasting all our displayed work into our scrap books. As the weather is heating up, it is even more important that all students wear sunscreen to school and remember to bring a broad-brimmed hat and a water bottle each day. If drink bottles are forgotten there is always a long line at the bubbler and this makes it difficult to get lessons under way. I wish all the students and their families a wonderful holiday break and look forward to seeing you back nice and refreshed for Term 4. Lucie Hardiman

Year 1A McCartney, 1B Pendergast and 1C McGilchrist Thank you for a wonderful Term 3. Year 1 has worked extremely hard this term and is looking forward to a well-deserved break. Thank you to all the parents and families for your assistance in making the two weeks of swimming extremely successful. Next term, Year 1 will be looking at ‘Celebrations around the World’ as part of SOSE, ‘Kitchen Experiments’ for Science, and we will be progressing further with Healthy Eating and Lifestyle with the visit of the Life Education Van. Have a wonderful break and we look forward to seeing you all next term. Sarah McCartney, Kristen Pendergast and Melanie McGilchrist, ,

Year 2A Hartley We find ourselves at the end of another busy, but fun, term. We have had a great time learning about the Olympics and Forces in science. Term 4 has already got many exciting things planned and we look forward to our countdown to Christmas! Well done to all the students on their fantastic behaviour and effort during the swimming program these last

couple of weeks. Although tiring, everyone has done a great job at staying on task with their work. We have enjoyed our last two days of fun activities and setting our room up for next term. Be sure to keep reading and writing over the holidays and jump onto studyladder for some great Maths activities! Cristina Hartley

Year 2B Aikens The first week of our Classroom Canteen was a huge success! The sound of money being counted and the smell of popcorn filled the room. Our Science Unit, Push and Pull, has ended with our class making paper helicopters! Next Term, we will be looking at Past and Present for both the Chinese culture and Australian Aboriginal culture. If you have any interesting books, posters or props for our room, it would be most appreciated. We are missing sixteen Home Readers, please bring them in as soon as possible. I have sent home the student’s Targeting Maths texts books, any uncompleted pages, up to page seventy eight, may be completed. Kellie Aikens

Year 2C Pearce We have had a wonderful term in Year 2! Amongst our improved literacy and mathematical skills, students covered the science area of Forces: Push and Pull and made all sorts of creative ideas come to life (Thank you to parents for your help in making our balloon powered cars!).

The students are very much enjoying the swimming program which has been a nice experience to end Term 3!

I wish you all a happy and safe holiday and look forward to seeing you in Term 4.

Chloe Pearce

Year 3A Decurtins The end of another term and yet again the time has flown! We have had a very busy, fun filled term with swimming lessons, Book Week activities and a four week visit from Mr Mario. Last week we finished reading our novel “The Indian in the Cupboard” and this week we got to watch the

The Essington School Darwin 3

movie. We really enjoyed watching the scenes come to life and comparing the movie storyline to the novel. We also wrote book reviews about the novel and I’m glad to say that it was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, including me. During Maths we have been learning all about perimeter. We have also been converting meters to centimetres and centimetres to millimetres. During our literacy sessions this week the children wrote some fantastic acrostic poems about holidays. I would like to wish you all a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing all the children return refreshed and ‘rearing to go’ for their last term in Year 3.

Leonie Decurtins

Year 4A Noonan We have had an action packed time in Term 3 with the swimming program, lots of experiments on rocks, our Science Fair and learning all about our Australian History. Next Term, we are looking at Fables, Myths and Stories. The students will have lots of opportunity to write stories of their own, as well as recounts, explanations, procedural Texts, arguments and poetry. It was great to see how many students made a big effort with their homework this Term. For those who complete it each week I have really seen a wonderful improvement in their Maths’ knowledge and spelling skills. Have a relaxing and enjoyable break and I look forward to seeing you in Term 4. Marie Noonan

Year 4B O’Connor It is hard to believe that Term 3 is over. I hope everyone has a restful week off, ready to begin Term 4 and Literacy studies of Myths, Fables and Legends. Selena O’Connor

Year 4C Brierley The students have been working exceptionally well as Term 3 comes to a close. They have been researching different explorers and producing a collaborative report this week, working in different teams. We have also been reviewing the information that we have learnt throughout our topic ‘Australia’ and beginning to think about our theme next term ‘Myths and Legends’.

In Mathematics, we have been learning about properties of 2d shapes, focusing on different types of angles and quadrilaterals. In English, we have been learning about the differences between informal and formal letter writing. I hope you all have a fantastic break and I look forward to seeing you all for the final term of the year! Helen Brierley

Year 5A Burns It is hard to believe we are now at the end of Term 3 and are heading into the final run home to the end of the year. The planning of a very exciting Term 4 is in full swing. Next term we will be looking at ‘Endangered Animals of Asia and Australia’ and ‘Different Cultures and Countries’ with an emphasis on ‘Christmas around the World’. This week has been another busy week, in and out of the classroom. Our class has been lucky enough to be chosen to perform in the Essington School Darwin Celebration’s Concert at the end of Week 8 next term. We are busy learning the Anklung, an Indonesian instrument made of two bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame. Students enjoyed their first practice and I look forward to hearing wonderful tunes as the new songs progress. Have an enjoyable week off. I will see you back refreshed for Term 4.

Ebony Burns Year 5B Materazzo What a fantastic term we have had. I cannot believe all that we have learned about; the London Olympics’ Ancient Greece, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and being fit, and reading all about Charlotte's Web and the adventures Wilbur and Charlotte have on the farm. I cannot emphasise how lovely the term has been. We have had such a wonderful time with not only our school work, but getting to know each other and seeing all the student’s personalities and strengths shine through. We are having a special day on Friday and will be designing cup cake toppings to celebrate our novel study on Charlotte's Web. A huge thank you to the supportive parents of my class, but most of all to the students who have made it so much fun!

Have a lovely week off and come back ready to tackle another ten weeks of learning, adventure and fun times! Sara Materazzo Year 5C Lea Year 5 have worked during Term 3 learning about the Olympics. Next term we will be focusing on Endangered animals in Australia and Asia. The project will be set in Week One and will be incorporated into part of next term’s homework too. I have encouraged the class to start researching animals of interest so that it is clear in their mind at the start of next term. We utilised library time this week to make a start. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable holiday break. I look forward to seeing the class again next term. Adene Lea Year 5D Ness What a fantastic term we have had! Everyone has really enjoyed learning about Ancient Greece and the Olympic Games. It was great to see how well our athletes competed in both the Olympic and Paralympic London Games, winning a hundred twenty medals in total. The students also did a fabulous job making Olympic sport dioramas and presenting information about their sport. The swimming program was a great success and it was a lovely way to start each day. I know the students enjoyed the swimming carnival and that they all gave their best effort on the day. Next term we will be learning about Endangered Animals of Asia, how they have adapted to live in their habitat and what we can do to help save the environment they live in. We will be completing our Narnia novel study and our Australian history project, and working in groups to prepare a puppet show for our Transition buddies. Towards the end of term we will also be finding out about how Christmas is celebrated around the world and compare the different customs. It will be busy! I hope you all enjoy a relaxing week holiday and come back refreshed for the last ten weeks of Year 5. Debbie Ness

Middle School Report Parent Teacher Discussions Thank you to parents who attended the recent Parent Teacher Discussions. The parent teacher partnerships are focused on ensuring that all students complete all their work, including work missed when students are away or ill. Many of our students are involved in Sports, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award challenges or take advantage of the Tours on offer throughout the year. The Homework Centre Timetable published in the newsletter is another way of providing that essential support to keep students meeting their learning goals. Parent support is always outstanding at the Essington School Darwin and very much appreciated. Although we do have scheduled Parent Teacher Interviews, we are available for Interviews at any time during the term.

Middle School Student Achievement and Involvement Casual Clothes Day This Friday 28

th September was a Casual Clothes day to

celebrate the end of Term 3 and raise money to assist the Mountain Gorillas. With only seven hundred mountain gorillas remaining in the world, School Representative Council students identified The Gorilla Organisation (Formerly the Diana Fossey Fund) as a very worthy charity. Money raised will be dedicated towards protecting these magnificent creatures and their habitat from destruction in an area where poverty means people overuse the available land and hunt for bush meat. Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation. Christmas Hamper Fundraiser School Representative Council students have started collecting non-perishable food items for their Christmas fundraiser. Students will be assembling food hampers from donations of food items (all food items will require a use by or best before date of February 2013). All hampers will be distributed to Darwin people in need over the Christmas period by Somerville Community Services. Donations can be left in Mrs Harvey’s office, the Middle School Office or the Front office. Student Profiles This week we introduce you to the hard working School Representative Council members in 6B

The Essington School Darwin 7

Middle School/Senior College 6B Liam Aughterson

When Liam went to school in Hong Kong he was a part of the Student Representative Council, as well as being House Captain. Outside of school, Liam loves playing soccer, tennis and participating in long distance running. Liam believes that you cannot achieve anything without actually doing something.

He would like to do a lot of different things in his role on the Student Representative Council, including a ‘Fun Walk’ to raise money. Liam is working hard to achieve all of his short and long term goals. He would like to make the world a better place by getting rid of bullying and trying to find a way to get people to stress less. Something that you may not know about Liam is that he is not the best at doing speeches, something that his work on the Student Representative Council might change! The thing that Liam like most about The Essington School Darwin is that it is a very happy place – there are never any sad people around. 6C Kiarhii Williams

Kiarhii is very heavily involved in sports at The Essington School Darwin. She has played netball, touch football, rugby and Australian Rules football. Outside of school, Kiarhii focuses her energy on Athletics, as she believes this is good for her fitness and her heart. As part of her role on the Student Representative Council, Kiarhii would like

to find and designate an area of the school where Middle School students can play ‘two square’ without getting into trouble. Kiarhii’s short term goals are to keep improving in Maths and also to keep working at her Athletics dream. To make the world a better place, Kiarhii would like to see an end to all wars and for there to be World peace. That way everyone can be friends and everyone will be happy. An interesting fact about Kiarhii that you may not know is that she has more than fifteen nationalities as part of her background – and she doesn’t even know what all of them are! The thing that Kiarhii likes the most about The Essington School Darwin is the fact that there is a no tolerance policy on bullying – she likes the fact that there is no bullying.

General Notices Music News Our Music Recital last Friday night at Charles Darwin University Theatre was delightful. All our students enjoyed themselves while entertaining us with their amazing talents. We appreciate the efforts made by the students to dress smartly for their performance. We extend our thanks to our parent helpers, Peta Mules and Tiziana Antonino, for their assistance on the evening. Thank you to the Music Teachers who attended to support their music students; Jill Kuhn, Kate Thompson, Lucy Rogers, Eunice Hicks, Eliza Tobin and Imelda Indrawati. Thank you to Eunice Hicks and Kate for helping backstage. Thank you to our students and families for supporting this recital. Our Songsters Choir performed beautifully at the Alzheimer’s Annual Tea Dance on Tuesday 25

th

September. We received many compliments about their excellent behaviour and their delightful singing. The one hundred and sixty guests thoroughly enjoyed the rock songs that they performed. A very big thank you to all our helpers on the day. Thanks to Danni Mears for organising the outfits. Thank you to Jaya Srinivas, Sharon Tomkinson, and Anne McDowell for looking after our students. Thanks to Caroline Anderson for leading the choir and Merrilyn Watson for accompanying the choir. Last but not least, thank you to our students for their superb singing. They looked very smart in the dazzling blue uniforms and were commended for their appearance.

On Friday 21st September at the Junior

School Assembly we were treated to a guitar recital by Joshua Staples. Joshua played the song “Big Ben”. Thank you to Eliza Rowberry for her outstanding performance at the Middle School assembly. She sang the song 'Skinny Love' by Birdy. Once again we are reminded of the talented musicians and singers we have in our school community. An important part of String Class is developing and constantly monitoring good technique in holding the violin, viola or cello bow. To aid with this there is a new device that will assist the student and teacher, the patented ‘Bow Buddies’ or ‘Cellophants’ bow accessory, instantly positions and supports all the fingers of the bow hold. All of our string teachers highly recommend this new device as an asset in developing the young string player’s technique. We are delighted to advise that the school will be selling the ‘Bow Buddies ‘and Cellophants ‘at a very reasonable price of $35.00. All students involved in the Sting Program have been given a note about the Bow Buddies and Cellophants. If you would like to purchase a ‘Bow Buddy or ‘Cellophant’, please return the order form to the pink tray in the Music Centre indicating your choice of accessory and the amount will be invoiced to your account by our Accounts Department. If you have not received a note, please do not hesitate to ask the string teachers, Danni Mears or myself and we will gladly assist you. The Top End Sounds Pro Shop Award The Top End Sounds Pro Shop Award is a voucher for $75.00 and is awarded to an instrumental student. They must have their practice times recorded in their Music Practice Book to be eligible and completed a reasonable amount of practice each week. This is an acknowledgement of a student who has practiced and progressed well over the term, and has proved to be a consistent and hardworking student. Congratulations go to Nisangi Wijensinghe who was awarded the voucher for term 3. A big thank you to Top End Sounds Pro Shop for sponsoring the voucher. If your child has achieved any great music achievements throughout the year please email [email protected] and this will be acknowledged in the

Weekly Bulletin and on occasions in assembly. Have a safe and happy holiday break and I look forward to seeing you next term.
