CHAPTER 1: ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAMMING

PROGRAMMING

The first and important stage in architectural delivery process and it is the integration part of profession, architectural service.

This is done first before anything else and this will be the basis of a planner in designing a proper plan because it is said that “the program itself is the design”.

It is very interesting for it does not seek for the design solution but discover the design problem. It is very crucial for gathering information or ideas because it may lead to insightful and formative decisions.

Programming is diverse as the people involved in its practice. For architects, the purpose of both programming and design is to achieve architectural building

that respond effectively to the program but it becomes more work of art. Primarily the objective of programming in architecture is to create something of wonder that captures the essence of institutions. It should also relate needs to site, climate and time and goes beyond immediately the needs of the users. This should also express the highest aspiration of the client-architect and the society. Moreover, this should move all the users.

ELEMENTS IN ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAMMING

1. Know the objectives of the master plan.2. Special restrictions and limitation on design.3. Characteristic of the site.4. Site development requirements.5. Functional requirements to the facility.6. Characteristic of the occupants.7. Special facility requirement.8. Budget.9. Flexibility for future growth and changes.10. Priority of need among the various requirements.

DESIGN-BASED ARCHITECCTURAL PROGRAMMING

This programming process continues over a number of meetings as the client reacts to the design by the architect.

As much as possible, architect showcase his working drawings complete so that it is not hassle for the both of their time to meet up several times. The thoroughness and accuracy of clients brief is very important for the architect.

The effectiveness of the plan relies on the clients’ desire and how the architect interviews his client.

In middle of this conversation, the process might become reactionary rather than creative in nature. There are times that the architect did not meet the needs of his/her client.

Page 2: CHAPTER 1

There are times the authority to make aesthetic decisions shifts from the architect to the client. They accept less than an excellent and artistic solution in order to cut the financial losses so the artistic integrity will be at considerable personal cost.

Architect who sees his/her role as facilitator and resource to the client may be more considerable with designs. Designer who sights complex, contradictory and even discordant final design strategy may enjoy programming design and develops aesthetic statement satisfactory to the architect.

Therefore, programming is not solely a verbal/numerical activity but also an artistic act in the profession.

KNOWLEDGE-BASED ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAMMING

The knowledge-based is done through systematic observation, controlled interviewing, or even in questionnaires and surveys, sampling and statically analysis. The information gathered from various research approaches is assembled, statically analyzed and summarized in a program.

The institution that benefits more when considering facility needs are the jails, hospitals, research facilities, government offices—has good concepts, goals and needs of the occupants.

There are issues that may affect the interests of users regarding the design. The utilization of high pioneered research methods, acquire excessive amounts of time and money. It consumes great quantity of time in planning and making arrangements for actual studies and analyzing large amount of data.

AGREEMENT-BASED ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAMMING

It talks about number of advantages, especially where time and money are at premium. Programmers work with this planning or building committee to achieve the mutual acceptance

set of design requirements. Programmers collect reading, organizational records and applicable government application

ADVANTAGES

The good thing about it is, it avoids misunderstanding and reactionary in nature of design-based programming process and higher costs and time required of knowledge-based programming.

. The CRS matrix is commonly used matrix program. This matrix has value or issue concerning: site, context, climate, technologies, landscape and aesthetics along the top of matrix are goals, facts, concept, needs and problems. Its advantage is, it’s very economical method of generating research on users.

The client and architect agree of nature and scope of design problem before design commences.

DISADVANTAGE

It has proven difficult for most student and programmers and also the client /user to separate programmatic concepts from design concepts.

There are some ideas excluded in certain value area.

VALUE-BASED ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAMMING

it tries to incorporate the best aspects and avoid the worst problem of all the programming approaches discussed above

It adopts the systematic procedures used in knowledge-based programming where they are needed to ensure that the info obtained is reliable and valid.

It is heavily influenced of being comprehensive and relies on a similar matrix format that all of the information collected and presented is agreed by the client.

Value-based recognizes importance of obtaining agreement with the client and communication is open in work sessions..It is their idea that it is less crucial area, the less structure information gathering systems employed. It let the most important values or issues set the tone of programming effort.

FOUR DISTINCT DIFFERENCES

It maintains the 4 value categories (function, form, economy, time) applied to all building types. develops a lists of appropriate concepts and needs for each value but avoids different tasks

developing programmatic concepts prior to finalizing the need statement assure that the designer part of the program team is available in providing summary problem

statement as part of the program, it state the problem in a way to allow designers understand the important design issues

Does not seek differences between the schematic design and design development in programming.
