Chapter 1 - The Science of Chemistry chemistry is the study of matter and its changes, water is an essential chemical, matter has mass, volume, and pressure, accuracy does not mean precision, we use scientific notation to refer to very large or very small numbers. How can a seedling become a tree? Is a precise result necessarily accurate? Is 0.012 the same thing as 1.2 × 10 ? 1B: Volume in Chemistry Students learn how to measure volume using a graduated cylinder. They also observe a chemical reaction by adding drops of bleach to solutions containing food coloring, then calculate the percent by volume of bleach needed to remove each color. 1C: Mass in Chemistry Students learn to measure the mass of solids and liquids on a digital balance. Liquid detergent is then added to a mixture of water and oil. Students propose a hypothesis to explain their observations. 1D: Dimensional Analysis This is a fun way for students to practice using conversion factors. They manipulate dimensional analysis cards that show them how to cancel units when they do conversions. Chapter 1 - The Science of Chemistry

chemistry is the study of matter and itschanges, water is an essential chemical, matter has mass, volume, and pressure, accuracy does not mean precision,we use scientific notation to refer to verylarge or very small numbers.

How can a seedling become a tree?Is a precise result necessarily accurate?Is 0.012 the same thing as 1.2 × 10 ?

1B: Volume in ChemistryStudents learn how to measure volume using agraduated cylinder. They also observe achemical reaction by adding drops of bleach tosolutions containing food coloring, thencalculate the percent by volume of bleachneeded to remove each color.

1C: Mass in ChemistryStudents learn to measure the mass of solidsand liquids on a digital balance. Liquiddetergent is then added to a mixture of waterand oil. Students propose a hypothesis toexplain their observations.

1D: Dimensional AnalysisThis is a fun way for students to practice usingconversion factors. They manipulatedimensional analysis cards that show them howto cancel units when they do conversions.
