Douglas and the Railroad1. Stephen Douglas wants to build a

coast to coast railroad beginning in his home state of Illinois (Chicago)

2. Southern Congressmen wanted the railroad to start in New Orleans

3. Douglas proposes to split the rest of the Louisiana Territory into two parts, slave and free (Kansas-Nebraska Act)

As a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the question of slavery is to be decided by popular sovereignty. The act sparked violence between pro-slavery and antislavery groups.
