Lesson 2.0: Number Lines, Opposites, and Absolute Value
When you count, you use real numbers. To picture this, you can put these numbers on a “number line”
Some assumptions:1)Each real number is paired with exactly one point on a number line2)Each point on a number line is paired with exactly one real number3)Each consecutive point on a number line is an equal distance from the previous point.
OriginPositive SideNegative Side
Opposites: Two numbers the same distance form zero, but on opposite sides
OriginPositive SideNegative Side
Absolute Value: The absolute distance of a value from zero
Because Absolute Value is only concerned with magnitude, not direction, ABSOLUTE VALUE IS ALWAYS POSITIVE!
