The next-generation universal home It is an example of how housing may evolve over the next 15 to 20 years

in response to present and future demographic and marketing trends

Demographic Trends Change in household type Increment of aged population Civil rights movement for people with disabilities

A growing community of designers, researchers, and educators worldwide is recognizing the importance of UD

Housing of the future must possess an ability to adapt to the differing needs and requirements of the users, no matter their age or strength of agility

Universal Design and HousingUniversal Design and Housing

Universal Design It respects, values, and strives to accommodate the broadest possible

spectrum of human ability in the design of all products and environments It helps eliminate

• the need for special features and spaces for a specific group of people• additional expense that specialness and special products often generate

Universal design in housing Only for people with disability? Also useful to all members of family It is also marketable

Overview of Key Features

All entrances are stepless with low thresholds Construction incorporates future access to second floor Some elements and features are located at more usable heights Adjustable features are provided throughout, so the environment adapts to

the individual Adjustable bathing fixture in each bathroom allows for multiple bathing

options.

6

For a more exhaustive listing of universal features see the article “Universal Design in Housing(Mace,

Due to a lack of understanding about or even an awareness of UD

ConclusionConclusion

13

We saw some prominent universal features to true holistic UD

And all of these designs reflect a belief in the marketing advantage of UD

However, many challenges remain for industry-wide adoption of UD

Furthering the understanding about universal design is critical

through projects like the next-generation universal home
