MAKING THEATRE: A Play is Put together

CHAPTER 5

A PLAY IS PUT TOGETHER TEXTBOOK (112-121)

PLANNING MEETINGS. The DIRECTOR works regularly with the designers and staff—beginning nearly six months before rehearsals—to share conceptual ideas wit the entire production team and to discuss the evolving designs, staging plans, and building/rehearsal schedules that will bring the production into being.

PRODUCTION MEETING (ARCOLA THEATRE)

DESIGN MEETING

Continuing design “mini-meetings” are essential to make certain that design and directorial goals are integrated and consistent.

A set design meeting atthe McCarter Theatre.

AUDITIONS

Actors in the company first present prepared monologues and then were asked to “read for” roles. This second audition is a “callback.”

FIRST READING

This first company meeting gathers the actors (often around a table) with the rest of the production staff. After the designers present their work, the actors read the play aloud.

SCENE SHOP

The tech director guides the crew in the construction of the set.
