ObjectiveToday we will describe ionic bonding using Cornell Notes and the NTG.

Page 3: Chapter 5, Section 2: Ionic Bonding

1. Ionic Bonding2. Ions – what are they?

3. An atom that has an electric charge

3. When it loses electrons, it becomes positive

3. when it gains electrons it becomes negative

Page 4: Chapter 5, Section 2: Ionic Bonding

2. Ionic bonds – what are they?3. A compound formed as a result of the attraction

between positive and negative ions

3. Electrons are either gained or lost creating a positive or negative charge

3. Ionic compound – what is it?

4. A compound that consists of positive and negative ions

Page 5: Chapter 5, Section 2: Ionic Bonding

2. Chemical Formulas3. Chemical formula – what is it?

4. combination of symbols that shows the ratio of elements in a compound

4. MgCl2 = 1 Mg and 2 Cl

3. Formulas

4. Ionic bonds form so the charge of the compound becomes neutral

Page 6: Chapter 5, Section 2: Ionic Bonding

2. Naming ionic compounds3. The name of the positive ion is 1st

3. The name of the negative ion is 2nd

3. Example

4. NaCl = Sodium Chloride

3. Single names = -ide

3. If polyatomic = -ate or –ite

4. ex : NH4No3 = Ammonium nitrate

Page 7: Chapter 5, Section 2: Ionic Bonding

2. Properties of Ionic Compounds3. Hard, brittle solids with high melting points

3. When melted or dissolved in water, they conduct electricity

3. Can form crystals as solids

3. Electrical conductivity = flow of charged particles.

Practice TimeDirections : in your notebook on the LEFT page, show how

the following molecules would bond together. Be sure to label the charges. Can you guess the name?

1. KCl

2. CaCl2

3. K2O
