435 CHAPTER 7 CIRCULATION OF WEEKLIES AND OTHER PERIODICALS 7.1.1. The Indian Press, especially comprising Weeklies, Monthlies and other Periodicals, has shown significant growth in the recent years, which has been reflected elaborately in different statistical tables from 7.1 to 7.10 in this Chapter. The Periodicals other than Dailies and Tri/Bi Weeklies formed an important part of the circulation in Print Media. It highlights and covers diverse topics such as finance, religion and philosophy, medicine, current affairs, fiction, art and science, sports, women power and children in different languages. For the current financial year 2016-17, a total number of 20,495 Annual Statements were received from the publishers online in respect of other Periodicals raising their claimed circulation figure to 21,27,28,237 copies per publishing day (Table 7.2). As a growth rate of 19.26% was recorded in e-filing of Annual Statements by Weeklies and other Periodicals, a decrease of 10.85% was also recorded in their claimed circulation this year compared to the previous year. 7.1.2. Among the Periodicals, Weeklies dominated the scene with a total number of 10,638 publications out of 20,495 publications which filed online Annual Statements for 2016-17 and in circulation also remained top by claiming 11,94,98,723 out of 21,27,28,237 copies per publishing day, followed by Monthlies 5,788 with circulation of 5,13,27,699 copies, Fortnightlies 2,804 with circulation of 2,60,79,617 copies, Quarterlies 446 with circulation of 20,16,051 copies and Annuals 96 with circulation of 14,50,045 copies. The remaining 723 publications were of other periodicities with a claimed circulation of 1,23,56,102 copies per publishing day. (Table 7.2) LANGUAGE WISE 7.2.1. Language wise analysis states that Hindi Periodicals have maintained a lead with 11,600 publications followed by English (1,487), Marathi (1424), Gujarati (1,409), Bilingual (1,205), Telugu (939), Urdu (643), Bengali (389), Kannada (354), Odia (279), Tamil (241) and Malayalam (197). In circulation also, Hindi Periodicals maintain their lead with a total circulation of 11,20,57,783 copies per publishing day followed by English (2,74,59,953), Gujarati (1,28,96,421), Bilingual (1,07,88,541), Marathi (99,51,128), Telugu (88,35,046), Malayalam (66,09,299) and Urdu (63,38,293). CHAPTER – 7

CIRCULATION OF WEEKLIES AND OTHER PERIODICALS

7.1.1. The Indian Press, especially comprising Weeklies, Monthlies and other

Periodicals, has shown significant growth in the recent years, which has been reflected

elaborately in different statistical tables from 7.1 to 7.10 in this Chapter. The Periodicals

other than Dailies and Tri/Bi Weeklies formed an important part of the circulation in Print

Media. It highlights and covers diverse topics such as finance, religion and philosophy,

medicine, current affairs, fiction, art and science, sports, women power and children in

different languages. For the current financial year 2016-17, a total number of 20,495 Annual

Statements were received from the publishers online in respect of other Periodicals raising

their claimed circulation figure to 21,27,28,237 copies per publishing day (Table 7.2). As a

growth rate of 19.26% was recorded in e-filing of Annual Statements by Weeklies and other

Periodicals, a decrease of 10.85% was also recorded in their claimed circulation this year

remaining 723 publications were of other periodicities with a claimed circulation of

7.2.1. While going through Annual Statements filed for the year 2016-17, it has been

STATE/UT-WISE

7.3.1. Uttar Pradesh continued to maintain its lead with 3,870 Periodicals; Madhya

Pradesh came second with 3,522 followed by Maharashtra 2,248, Uttarakhand 1,773, Delhi

1,760, Gujarat 1,491 and Rajasthan 1,406. (Table 7.4)

7.3.2. Uttar Pradesh remained on top position in terms of circulation also with a

claim of 4,43,92,521 copies per publishing day followed by Delhi with 2,70,34,631 copies,

Madhya Pradesh 2,44,37,825 copies, Maharashtra 2,11,39,095 copies, Gujarat 1,41,10,724

copies and Uttarakhand 1,39,26,306 copies per publishing day. (Table 7.4)

CONTENTS

7.4.1. The Periodicals have been classified into 20 categories according to their

contents as per total number of Annual Statements received for the year 2016-17.

7.4.2. The Periodicals which cover major topics fall under the category of NCA

(News and Current Affairs 18,544), followed by UNC (Unclassified 512), SOW (Social

Welfare 244), EDU (Education 235), LAC (Literature & Culture 172), MAH (Medicine and

Health 160) and AAH (Agriculture and Animal Husbandry 98) etc. (Table 7.5)

7.4.3. Weeklies and Monthlies maintained the leading trend in terms of coverage of

matters pertaining to News and Current Affairs with 10,638 and 5,788 publications in

numbers respectively. (Table 7.5)

7.4.4. Periodicals were published in all major Indian languages except Bodo and

Manipuri covering topics on news and current affairs.

7.4.5. Hindi Periodicals continued to dominate the scene in the category of News and

Current Affairs with 11,600 publications followed by English & Marathi with 1,487 & 1,424

publications respectively. They continued to remain on top leaving aside rest of other

categories such as topic on social welfare, religion and philosophy, literary and culture, etc.

7.4.6. Circulation-wise also the Periodicals covering News and Current Affairs as the

main topic remained on top with 18,55,87,724 copies followed by UNC (Unclassified

81,48,587) EDU (Education 37,34,415), LAC (Literature & Culture 22,08,308) and SOW

(Social Welfare 21,63,256). (Table 7.7)

GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS

7.5.1. There were 60 Government Publications, which filed Annual Statements for

the year 2016-17, out of which 35 belonged to the Central and 25 to the State Governments

(Table 7.8). However, the actual number of publications brought out by the Central as well as

State governments and their various Departments are much higher.

7.5.2. Out of the 60 Government Publications, Monthlies dominated the scene

having 40 in number followed by Weeklies, Quarterlies, and Fortnightlies and Daily having

5, 4, 3 and 3 publications respectively. Remaining 4 were of other periodicities. (Table 7.8)

7.5.3. Language-wise, the largest number of government publications were brought

out in English (20) followed by Hindi (11), Bilingual (7), Malayalam (5), Urdu (3) and

Telugu (3). (Table 7.9)

CENTRAL GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS

7.6.1. Out of 35 Central Government Publications; 18 were in English, 07 in Hindi,

04 in Malayalam, 2 in Urdu and 1 each in Odia, Tamil, Telugu and Punjabi. (Table 7.9)

7.6.2. Out of 35 Central Government Publications; 23 were published from Delhi

followed by 5 from Kerala, 2 from Maharashtra and 1 each from Assam, Telangana,

Karnataka, West Bengal and Uttarakhand. (Table 7.10)

STATE GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS

7.7.1. There were 25 State Government Publications which filed their Annual

Statements in 2016-17. Out of this, 7 were in Bilingual, 4 were in Hindi, 3 were in Marathi, 2

each were in Bengali, English and Telugu, 1 each were in Gujarati, Kannada, Multilingual,

Urdu and Malayalam. (Table 7.9)

7.7.2. State-wise study shows that, 3 each were from Delhi, Karnataka and Madhya

Pradesh, 2 each were from West Bengal, A.P., and Telangana, 1 each from Assam, Gujarat,

U.P., Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Kerala. (Table 7.10)
