😏 Remember, there are rides possible after each event (weather permitting)…For any weather caused changes, please check the online calendar on our web site. http://www.gwrra-mi-g.org
Do you have suggestions for rides in Michigan that we haven’t gone on in a while? These rides could even be an over night… Help us develop a very exciting riding calendar for 2020.
July 8 Wed 7:00 Team meeting at Rodney’s house 221 Crown St. SW Wyoming MI 49548 Time to do some real serious planning.
District and Chapter Events http://gwrra-mi.org/district-and-chapter-events/
As Rally Time approaches we are sorry to have to announce that the Rally itself won’t be able to happen due to COVID-19. Since we can’t do many of the things that we normally put on the schedule for our annual rally the Michigan Team has decided to scale it down to what we still can do. This includes a FUN Weekend with NO registration fee. So if you have pre-registered you will get it back. Our “Pirates” theme will be on hold for next year! See the flyer in this newsletter and on the website for details. We are calling it the “Michigan District Fun Weekend” This weekend will include the following. We will be able to social distance and hold some University Classes in the Lion’s Pavilion. We can keep the TRC-R Rider Course on the schedule for Friday morning IF enough people pre-register for it - Use the Rider Course form on the website and in the newsletter. We WILL still have the rides planned out by Assistant District Ride Coordinator, Neil Feikema. We will conduct 50/50 raffles and our Michigan District Raffle that will benefit the Rainbow Connection so don’t stop selling tickets! One thing to keep in mind is respecting the space of others. Please use social distancing and if you have been sick or in contact with someone who has been sick we invite you to STAY HOME this time!
National GWRRA Event Calendar http://www.gwrra-mi.org/2018%20Flyers/2018%20GWRRA%20Events.pdf
Fine PrintThere has always been an issue about starting times. When the time states 8:30, about 3/4 of the participants show up at 8:00. Now, if we state the start time is 8:00, will the same participants show up at 7:30? THAT is the big question and is up to debate. Your input is important here…🤔

RODAR’S CORNER
June 3 we had our first team meeting in someone’s actual home since March. We had 5 people at the house and another 5 on Zoom. Hope to have more people join on us Zoom so we can keep in touch.
On June 6th, we had a hot dog roast in Rodney’s backyard. There were 15 of us on a beautiful, sunny afternoon. It was good to actually be together again in person and catch up with what everyone has been doing. Five of us decided to go for a ride on the bikes over to the Caboose in Alto for ice cream. Great way to end the day🍦
Rodney and I took the neighbors dog for almost a two hour walk the next morning and then got on the bike for a 121 mile ride in about 4 hours. We stopped and had a little picnic lunch at a roadside park on Bluestar Hwy near Ionia. It had restrooms that were open and had just been cleaned by an older gentleman. I’ll try posting sooner when I think we’re going to just get up and go. When the weather is nice you can assume that we are going to go for a ride somewhere 😁
Saturday, the 13th, there were 5 of us who rode up to Mount Pleasant. We stopped at the Honda dealer there and then found a really nice park to have our lunch(restrooms were locked though☹ )We found a road that Rodney used to drive years ago named Lumberjack. It was very nice. We put 218 miles on the bike.
On Sunday, Rodney and I ended up riding down to the Fennville area. Found some really great roads and West Side County Park in Allegan County. It has two pavilions, other picnic areas, restrooms, and its on Lake Michigan. A little side note: we’ll have another Zoom meeting in July to discuss whether to have our Gatherings outside during the summer months at different parks at noon and bring brown bag lunches. Please join us or let me know if you would prefer to have our Gatherings be on a Saturday or Sunday(all weather permitting)or if you have any other ideas to get together. Right now it’s not feasible to be in a large group in a restaurant so this would be a good alternative to be able to meet😁
On the 20th there were 9 of us who started out on our ride. We ended up at the roadside park in Newaygo on M82(with all the stairs)where 7 of us had lunch together. It was a pretty hot day so we didn’t even attempt doing the stairs. We stopped at Marc and Patty’s in Howard City to buy some motorcycle items they had at their garage sale. Then we went to the Dairy Den and the two of them drove over in their car to end our day by having ice cream with us🍦
On the 21st Rodney and I ended up alone again on our ride. We put on 110 miles and drove around the Middleville area where we found Grand Rapids and Fremont streets. We also saw signs that read “road settled” which neither of us had ever seen before🤔Found more beautiful roads in the Freeport, Lake Odessa and Clarksville area.
Saturday, the 27th, there were 4 of us who rode to the West Side County park in Fennville again. Someone had one of the pavilions all decorated for what looked like a graduation party. We sat under the other one to have our lunch. It started out cloudy, but the sun came out and it turned out to be a beautiful day.
Hope to see more of you out riding soon😁

THOUGHT TRAIN
As most you you know GWRRA did way with the Chapter Educator position awhile back. There was a "Big" void between the Chapter, District and National level regarding the Levels program, Riding courses, Safe & Actual miles and a host of other pertinent information. I became the Ride Coordinator, trained into coordinating rides for the Chapter. Still no real contact between the Local Chapter, District and National.
Then along comes the "New" Chapter Skill Enhancement Advisor (CSEA) position. This position support member/participant by providing them with information they can consider on ways to become skilled, prepared and safer riders and co-riders. (Kind of like what the old Chapter Educator did). This is not a officer position and is not a mandatory position within the Chapter.
I felt this new position fit my needs and I stepped down as the Ride Coordinator. My past knowledge in the Rider Education program helps me assume my new role with not too much to have to be trained/reeducated to bring me up to speed.
I've already contacted many of our Chapter G members, keeping up on their Levels and have gathered information on their miles recorded as of this month. I talked with one of our newer members, Ron Meschke and in the process of getting him involved in the Levels program. As of today he has achieved Levels I and II. He's going to be taking the Rider Course when it's offered this year and Level III is within reach.
For members information the Rider Education program and Levels are not required to belong to GWRRA, but, we what to provide the membership with the basic support needed to participate meaningfully and successfully in the GWRRA Rider Education Program at the Chapter.
There is some information from Dennis and Felicia our MI-DE, so I won't go into too much more riding information as they have it covered.
I would like to say Thank You to our Chapter Directors, Ride Coordinators for the great job Chapter G has done so far in making sure almost every weekend has some type of ride scheduled. If you can make it great, if not, we'll see you on the next one.
Jane and I was able to partake of the ride this past Saturday. Well coordinated, know where we were going, bag lunch and only a few stops to find an open area to sit and eat our lunch. Nice day, great friends and the lunch wasn't too bad either.
I'll be taking some Zoom training this coming Thursday regarding CSEA so I'll be able to add on to my knowledge and help our Chapter keep up with Rider Educations, Levels and keep us safe on the road.
Best Regards,
Bob Ungrey

We got this email from GWRRA. Even though we’re not riding much this summer due to covid-19, we’re going to have some very warm days coming to ride. It’s just a reminder that we have to stay hydrated and take necessary breaks. Ride safely!

Happy Social Distancing,
Rider Courses have been scheduled now that the educational system have been given guidelines for COVID-19 requirements. The registration form is attached; it is also available on the GWRRA MI website. We are excited to finally be able to help others with motorcycle safety. We have purchased disposable masks and hand sanitizers and are prepared to work with all of you to practice safe social distancing in a learning atmosphere.
The social season has begun, so here are some reminders/tips for group riding.
Try to keep your group manageable — between five and seven riders is a good size. If necessary, break up large groups into smaller ones.
Good leaders will be watching their mirrors, and will wait until there is a large enough space for the whole group to move over. Sometimes that’s just not possible, in which case the riders make individual lane changes, returning to their positions within the new lane. Maintain your speed when changing lanes! Remember that there are riders behind you who need to move over as well.
Communication, including having the leader activate his or her turn signals early is crucial; following riders should also use their signals, essentially passing the message back. Some groups also like to use hand signals for upcoming turns: left arm straight out to the side for a left turn, left arm raised at a 90-degree angle for a right turn. Below is a chart from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation showing some other common hand signals. Each group has their own way of communicating, so don’t be afraid to ask before you leave!
Never blindly follow riders ahead of you when they pull out to pass a car. Move over to the left portion of the lane and wait until you have a clear view of the road ahead. That may mean waiting until the rider in front of you is safely back in the lane ahead of the vehicle you’re passing. Then check your mirror to make sure another speed demon isn’t trying to make the pass from behind you.
Being passed by a single vehicle is easy: just let them go. There may be times when the vehicle doesn’t have the room to get around the whole group in one go. Don’t take offense, even if they’re obviously just being impatient. Open up a space and let them back in. There’s no sense in riding too close and putting yourself and the rest of your group in danger.
Each group has its own procedure for staying together, and it’s something that should be discussed before you leave. Some groups prefer to stay in a pack at all times, with the leader pulling over immediately if you get separated, for example at a red light. Others, especially on long trips or when riding off-road, use the buddy system or back-marker technique. When
Page 8
MI-Chapter GDistrict EducatorsDennis & Felicia Schulte
approaching a turn or confusing intersection, check your mirrors. If you don’t see the rider behind you, pull over and wait.
Now that you’ve got the basics down, let’s talk about being a better group rider.
This is something you should be practicing anytime you’re on the bike, not just in a group. You’re always scanning ahead, checking your mirrors and watching the patterns of other drivers, right? Don’t get lazy just because you’re surrounded by your “pack!” Watch your leader. If your group is stuck behind a slow-moving vehicle and the leader starts to peer around them, you can guess that a pass is imminent. Be ready to change lanes or pass quickly, safely and efficiently, keeping the whole group moving. If you’re on a multi-lane highway, the sweep rider could move over early and “set a pick” for the riders ahead, keeping the lane open for them to easily slide over. When Dennis first did this as a tail gunner while Felicia was on the bike with him, it brought back memories of her growing up on the farm and following tractors and implements home after dark or on busy roads. She used to “set a pick” for her father and brothers on M-53 in the Kinde area so they could turn onto Oak Beach Road to go home from some of their fields!
Look farther than 20 feet ahead of you. See that “stale” green traffic light that could be getting ready to turn yellow? Be prepared for the rider in front of you to hit the brakes if the light changes. See the guy in the SUV in the next lane over, slowing down and looking over his shoulder? He likely wants to change lanes — keep an eye on him, and consider slowing to let him in.
Group riding rules are not always black and white. For example, on long highway stretches it’s common for the group to spread out as everyone finds their own pace. Just be sure that you follow your group’s established procedure for back marking at turns. In areas of heavy traffic and slow speeds, try to keep your formation tight. Don’t be “that rider,” who dawdles and allows large gaps to form between you and the rider(s) ahead, then bolts through yellow lights at the last second, leaving those behind high and dry or forced to attempt to make the light.
Ultimately, we are all responsible for ourselves and only ourselves. Even though you’re in a group of other riders, you alone are in control of your bike and are therefore on a solo ride. If the group is doing stuff that makes you uncomfortable, don’t do it. Ride your own pace, don’t run the red light even though the two riders ahead of you did, and if you need to take a break, signal to your group and pull over. And don’t attempt an unsafe pass — your group won’t leave you behind.

Attached, also you will find the C-SEA qualifications and responsibilities. National Office is starting to question this position as it does not seem to be meeting the members’ needs. We personally think that re-evaluation of some decisions made in Rider Education is not a bad idea.
Ride safe together and enjoy the friends and families we’ve missed over the past months,
Dennis and Felicia MI-DE

We’re all experiencing varying degrees of fear, doubt, and anxiety during this COVID-19 virus pandemic. How do you make sense of it all?
Teresa Lasher knows what it’s like to personally walk through physical, emotional, and spiritual turmoil. Facing a brain tumor and surgery to remove a tumor, she could either cave into fear or trust the One who created her.
Walk with Teresa through this 90-day devotional/meditation book called Life is: Good, Fragile, Precious – loving yourself so you can love others. Within the pages, you’ll find humor, interactive questions, and application of scriptural Truth. This book can be used individually or in a group study.
Hope and Encouragement are sprinkled throughout the pages. The book’s divided into three sections – Mind (Life is Good), Body (Life is Fragile), and Soul (Life is Precious). Six chapters in each section are separated into five short readings per day. Theme: the art of being still and to cease striving. Necessary ingredients in today’s uncertain world!
You, too, have a choice to make: Faith vs. Fear. Which giant will win? Title of the book by Teresa K. Lasher - Life is: Good, Fragile, Precious – Loving yourself so you can love others. Available in softcover/or Kindle through Amazon or contact me at 616-648-1029 / [email protected]
