• The Boers detested British rule and moved from the coastal areas in a journey known as the Great Trek. They placed the indigenous peoples in reservations.

• British policy in South Africa was largely influenced by Cecil Rhodes, a proponent of British expansion. Rhodes founded diamond and gold companies, but his interaction with the Dutch led to the Boer War.

• The concept of indirect rule was favored by the Europeans as it was cheaper and easier to implement. Local African rulers simply enforced European decisions.

• Indirect rule had the unfortunate effect of keeping younger and talented African political leaders out of power.
