2. Identify hazards, risks and safe work practices in order to maintain healthy and safe work environment. (C1)

3. Perform communication skills in a team to respond for an accident action at workplace. (A1)

3are combination of engineering, management & law knowledgeNew course : most engineering graduates do not undergo formal trainingTo educate students in area of industrial OSHATo develop safety awarenessAbility to identify all industries hazardsBe informative in many instancesSometimes have calculation contentThis course :PRELIMINARY

INTRODUCTION TO OSHA

7COVERAGE OF OSHA All economic sectors, including the public services and statutory authorities (Refer to Schedule 1)Except those subjected to the Merchant Shipping Ordinance and the armed forcesThe systems and procedures focus on the following areas of concern:S&H trainingUsing of toxic materialsSafe systems of workInternal S&H mgmt.Environmental ctrl.Accident investigationsMachine guardingSafety committees HousekeepingFire safety & preventionSafe plantMedical & welfareNoise & dust control Emergency procedures

8PROVISION OF OSHA Based on the self-regulation scheme. Its primary responsibility is to ensure safety and health of work lies with those who create the risks and those who work with the risks. The concept of self-regulation encourages cooperation, consultation and participation of employees and management in efforts to upgrade the standards of safety and health at the workplace.Aims : establish effective safety and health organization and performance. The OSHA is enforced by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), a government department under the Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia.

9MOTIVATIONIn Malaysia, 3 sectors incur high rates of accidents;ManufacturingTradingAgriculture, forestry & fishingApp. 72% of total industrial accidents, which the small-scale enterprises accidents data are not included.Concept : If that unsafe condition can be eliminated or suitably controlled, there will be no accident even there is an error on the part of any personnel involvedthe best approach to providing safety and health at the workplace through ENFORCEMENTTherefore, the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514) came into force in February 1994.

10DefinitionSAFETYThe condition of being safe or freedom from harm and injuryFor occupational study, its defined as a measure of the acceptability of risk Simplified : injury-causing situationHEALTHA state of complete physical, mental and social well being and is not simply the absence of illness or disease - WHOFor occupational area, its refers to an attempts to maximize the individual capacity to live happily and productively Simplified : disease-causing

11BASIC TERMINOLOGYA sequence of unplanned events which usually produces unintended injury, death or property damage. Represent the number of injuries and/or illnesses per 100 full-time workersIncidence ratesAccidentIncidenceAn event that could result in injury, damage or other form of losses

Caught in or between : crushed between two moving machinesStruck by : impact or blow to the body by an objectStruck against : walking into a doorFall to the same level : tripping on a level walkwayFall to a lower level : falling off a ladderFall to a higher level : tripping while walking on the stepsAbraded, scratched, or punctured : an injury such as hitting the face when fallingOverexertion : sprains, strains, etc, caused by a greater-than-average effortContact with an energy : mechanical, kinetic, electrical, chemical, thermal, gravity or radiation
