This is the 16th Annual Char-Maine Ranching Bull Sale, and I would say the most exciting offering they have ever put forward. There are truly some great herdbulls that will work in any herd in the land and increase the profitability of your program. Whether you are a seedstock producer, or a commercial producer, there is something for everyone. Steve and Brad know their cattle and if you want a bull that you can use to breed your heifers, they have something for you. If you want to add performance to your calf crop, they have something for you and will give you the right advice about what will work the best for you.

Touring the cowherd this summer, we found it impressive to see the structural soundness of feet and legs and udders they have bred into the herd. Look close and see the line breeding of both sires and cow families that have locked in the solid genetics that are time proven, but with enough of a twist to be outcrosses to most all herds.

The EPDs are also tremendous with some definite curve benders being offered. The rankings are provided so you can see how they fit in the Charolais breed and many of the bulls are Homozygous Polled, if that is a concern for you.

Do your bull shopping early, save some tax and rest easy that you have a great bull to turn into your pasture next spring. The sale date has changed, so don’t show up late for this tremendous offering.

The cattle business in 2020 has been faced with many uncertainties. One fact that is very certain is that Charolais calves have demanded premiums, and in many cases some very significant premiums.

Here at Char-Maine, we raise bulls with a definite purpose! Each female is mated to a certain Sire for a specific reason. We offer power bulls that are in the top 1% of the breed for weaning and yearling weights, but are under breed average for birth weight. We also offer bulls that you can breed to any cow of any size or breed, that will calve unassisted and bring in that premium Charcross calf. Also bulls that you can confidently breed to purebred heifers and even commercial heifers.

This business is all about selling your calves for the most dollars per head. Brad and I know our program inside and out, our Herd Bulls and females are proven and predictable. We can match you with the bull(s) for your program. If you have any questions, please give us a call.

As we come to the end of another Fall Run in Fort Macleod, I reflect on the thousands of cattle that went through the sale ring and also the cattle sold on the video sales. The one thing that remains consistent is that the producers with the more stringent breeding programs are always the ones rewarded with the top returns for their calf crop. The consistency of the cow herd and the quality of the bulls that you select really does make a big difference. We see a lot of Char-Maine sired calves throughout the fall and they are always at the top of the market. As a rancher, most things are beyond our control, fortunately, the quality of the bull you are mating your cows to is within your control. Estrada was one of the high selling bulls in the spring of 2018. After many phone calls with Brent Saunders and pictures of his mother/grandmother, feet, udders, etc., we decided to have him. Within minutes of purchasing him, Lorne Lakusta called and purch\ased a piece of him. We loved his length, smoothness, performance along with his calving ease. He has not disappointed either of us as his calves are just like him and among some of the best either of us has raised. Proven sire, proven cow family, calving ease and top 1% of the breed for weaning weight and yearling weight, how can you get better than that? Co-owned with Spruce View Charolais.

Highwood, one of those calves that is destined to be great! Estrada out of maybe the best Lanza female we have ever raised, and that is saying a lot! He is super long, smooth made and has that extra eye appeal. Has enough calving ease to use on purebred heifers but still has that extra performance to rank top 2% for weaning,1% for yearling, 15% for ribeye and 3% for marbling. Mother is a typical, perfect uddered, LT Lanza daughter, he truly has it all.


One of the pasture favorites all summer, off a super, two-year old, Ledger Up daughter, with a beautiful udder. We have used Char-Maine bulls now for 5 years. The bulls stand up in our tough breeding conditions which is in one of the higher parts of the Porcupine Hills. They have to travel many miles to service cows everyday with lots of brush and rugged country with great conceptions every year. The calves are hearty coming out of Angus cross cows calved in range conditions. They get up and go. I have yet to pull a Charcross calf because it is too big. The calves always have great muscle structure, growth, hair and all around performance. You won’t go wrong with Steve’s program. Always great service.

We have been using 30 Quinton bulls for a number of years. Calving starts the 25th of April to avoid spring storms as much as possible. Calving is on grass and the ranch is 4500 ft. elevation. Calves are weaned the 25th of October and shipped. We have received top dollar for our calves every year with many repeat buyers. We are very pleased with Steve’s ongoing support.
