The portrayal of a character.There are 8 methods of

characterization



1) PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION ***

Identifies what the character physically

looks like:

Height

Skin color

Hair color

Body type

Old/Young Male/Female



EXAMPLE OF PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

As the new girl walked down the hallway,

heads turned and the whispers started. She

was thin and tall, towering over most of the

boys. Her uniform was pristine, not a single

wrinkle, not a single non-uniform item to be

seen. Her long black hair was twisted into

small tight braids and spiraled into a bun onthe top of her head. She wore light eye

shadow that brought out the green flecks in

her brown eyes.



2) N AME ANALYSIS ***

A character’s name can have a hidden

meaning that can help develop the

character.

A character’s name is often carefully

chosen to represent something about

the character and/or the story.



EXAMPLE OF N AME

ANALYSIS

Remus Lupin from HarryPotter is a werewolf

The name Remus

comes from Romanmythology. Romulusand Remus are thetwin founders of Romewho were abandonedwhen they were babiesand raised by a She-Wolf.



3) ATTITUDE ***

The author describes or insinuates the

character’s attitude or personality.



EXAMPLE OF ATTITUDE

“She suffered constantly, feeling that all

the attributes of a gracious life, every

luxury, should rightly have been hers.”

-”The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant

We learn that the main character of this

story has an attitude of resentment

and feels she deserves a better life.



4) DIALOGUE ***

The way a character talks.

This includes things like:

Tone and diction

5) THOUGHTS ***

Sometimes we are allowed to hear the

character’s thoughts. This can help us

to understand them better and is

something that we can analyze.

6) REACTIONS OF OTHERS ***

How do characters in the story relate

to the character that you are

characterizing.

Verbal response, physical or

emotional treatment

You can tell if the character is liked,

disliked, popular, honest, mean, by theway the other characters interact with

them.

7) ACTION OR INCIDENT ***

A character can be analyzed by

looking at how they respond to certain

situations. The action determines the

way the character develops as thestory goes on.

What events have shaped this

character?



EXAMPLE OF ACTION OR

INCIDENT In the Batman comics, Bruce Wayne’s

parents are mugged and killed right in

front of him by criminals in Gotham

City. This event causes Bruce tocreate a secret identity and go out into

the city to fight crime. This event

causes him to seek vengeance.



PHYSICAL/EMOTIONAL

SETTING ***The setting of a story affects the

character’s development as well as the

plot.

Physical setting: where the story is

set can effect the way a character

develops.

Emotional setting: the series of

emotions that the character deals

with throughout the story.



After reading you will choose a character and fill out

a character 4 square worksheet using your notes

and the text itself.
