Superintendent’s Message by Paula Wright Teacher Appreciation Week is May 59, 2014. The Chariton Communi- ty School District is very fortunate to employ an excellent teaching staff. Our staff is dedicated to helping stu- dents grow and develop into produc- tive life-long learners. Take a mo- ment to thank a teacher for making a difference in your life or the life of your child/ren. There are quite a few facilities im- provement projects planned for the summer of 2014, one of which is cur- rently underway. The MS is currently under renova- tion receiving a new HVAC system. This $700,000 project began a couple of weeks ago and already the old boiler has been removed along with the old rusted out cooling tower. New classroom units are currently being installed. Two Rivers (the con- tractors) has indicated that the new system will be completed in July. Kirk Orna (Technology Director) is in the process of updating the airport stations in all buildings and installing units in every classroom in the HS & MS. This is an important part of the process of preparing for the 1:1 lap- top initiative for the MS & HS. Chariton Community School District is offering summer school for grades K– 2 at Columbus Elementary during the month of June. Lunch and Transportation Provided! When: June 9-26 Monday – Thursday 9:00 AM – 11:00AM Where: Columbus Elementary Why: Summer school is a wonderful way to retain knowledge through the sum-mer, learn new skills and participate in a fun learning environment. The district will provide busing, both pickup and drop off, to Russell, Lucas and Williamson. Students who sign-up will receive information on pickup and drop-off locations. The district will also pro-vide free lunch starting at 11:00 AM. If riding a bus the students will leave the building at approximately 11:30 AM. If your child is not eating lunch or riding the bus, dismissal time is 11:00 AM.

If you have not seen the registration slip come home with your child please call Columbus elementary to register.

Eighth Grade I Have A Plan Iowa

Middle School Report Cards will be available June 9 in the Middle

School office.

All 8th graders have been working on I Have A Plan Iowa (IHAPI) during this school year. Stu-dents will be finalizing their four-year plans and 9th grade registration sheets the beginning of May. All 8th graders are also required to complete Steps 5 and 6 of IHAPI before the end of their 8th grade year. If you haven’t talked to your 8th grader about high school, please be sure to check with them re-garding their plans. All students must have plans signed by a parent/guardian.

Physicals will be offered to middle school stu-dents at the Middle School on Wednesday, May 7, in the morning. A completed form and pay-ment of $10.00 must be returned to the school before the physical can be done. Local physi-cians and /or physician’s assistants will be pre-sent to complete the physical examination. Checks are to be made out to LCHC Medical Clinic. No insurance will be filed. Forms will go home with interested students the week be-fore and must be returned by May 6. All parts of the form need to be completed and signed by the student and parent except for the PHYSICAL EXAMINATION portion before the physical is done.

Middle School Physicals

The 2013-2014 current 5-7th grade students will soon be filling out locker partner request forms. All students at Chariton Middle School have a locker of their own and share a second locker with another student. Students will be signing up for locker partners in May.

May 20 is the last day to order the CMS yearbook. May 5 is the last day to order the CMS yearbook with your name or personalization stamps, ie,. music notes, sport symbols etc. To order your yearbook go to Jostens Yearbook and follow the prompts, it's easy and quick!

We will NOT be ordering "extras".

CCEA SCHOLARSHIP

The Chariton Community Education Associa-tion (CCEA) is offering a $500 scholarship for a college junior or senior who is majoring in education and is a graduate of Chariton High School. The fundraiser for this scholarship was held last fall when dessert plates were sold following the high school musical. This will be the sixteenth year for the scholarship. The application deadline is May 15, 2014. Information and application forms may be ob-tained at the Chariton High School Office or the school’s website. High School Band & Choir

to Present Spring Concert On Tuesday, May 13th, 2014, the CHS Music De-

partment will present their final concert of the

year. The concert will feature the Concert Choir,

Concert Band, and several solos/small groups. The

concert will begin at 7:30 PM in Johnson Auditori-

um.
