5.QuizEarly lifeCharles Dickens was born on 7 February 1812, in Portsmouth. His father was John Dickens and his mother was Elizabeth Barrow. His fathers job was a clerk but his mothers dream job was a teacher and to run a school. His family of 7 brothers and sisters the Dickens family never had much money. However Mr Dickens never dreamed of becoming rich.

Happy and Hard Times

In 1816 Charles and his family moved to Chatham in Kent. Chares had a fun time there and loved exploring the country side and the old castle at Rochester. In 1822 the family moved to London and Mr Dickens was sent to prison for 6 months for not paying his bills. At the age of 12 Charles had to work at a dirty old factory near the River Thames. His job was to put labels on pots used to clean fire places. He never forgot that horrible time and wrote about it some time later in his life.

Growing upAt 1824 Charles father had enough money to send him to school again.When he was 15 , Charles got a job in a lawyers office and detested it .In most of Charless books he makes the lawyers horrid people! Charles learned Shorthand and got a job writing about Parliament. He travelled around Stagecoach, writing for newspapers and he wrote stories about the people he met. His most famous story is Oliver Twist about a boy who is made to work for an undertaker. Almost half of the funerals in London were for children aged Under 10 years old!!!!!
