Charles Donnell 1931–2017 Charles Alfred Donnell, Jr. died peacefully on July 14, 2017 at his home, Evergreen Woods in North Branford, CT. Chuck was born on November 23, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois, to Vivian Linnea Nelson Donnell and Charles Alfred Donnell, Sr. He was a man of deep allegiances: to Zoe Kelly Donnell, the love of his life for 66 years, to his large and loving family, to the city of his birth and his beloved Cubs, and to his alma mater. Chuck received a BA from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, from 1950 to 1954. He went on to earn an MBA from the University of New Haven. He and Zoe, whom he met at Carleton, married in 1956 and embarked on a lifetime together, raising a family of four children and eight grandchildren, sharing a love of theater and of laughter. They made their first home in Wisconsin and then for over 40 years in Connecticut as Chuck pursued several chapters in his professional life. Over the course of more than thirty years, from 1954 to 1987, he worked for one company as it evolved from Marathon Paper Company into the American Can Company and then Primerica. Directly after college he served in the Army in Louisiana from 1954 to 1956 during the Korean War. Chuck began volunteering at Carleton a year after his graduation. In 1987, following his time in the business world, Chuck embarked on a second career as a fundraiser for Carleton, retiring in 2010. He bridged the academic and the business worlds and he was proud of the contributions his work brought to Carleton. Generous in every sense of the word, Chuck was known for his business acumen and for his bear hugs which— with his 6' 4" frame—were enveloping. His warmth set everyone at ease. Gregarious, insightful, and quick witted, Chuck was known for his memorable phrases. His family remembers among them, "It's not the things you do, it's the things you don't do you regret," "Make 'em say no," and "It adds up faster if you use big numbers." Cherished by his family and treasured by his friends, he will always be missed and remembered. He is survived by his wife, Zoe; by their four children: Douglas and wife Deb, Kelly and partner Duke, David and wife Melanie, Zoie and husband Jonathan; and eight grandchildren: Kiera, Sonai, Carson, Zoey, Emily, Austin, Willa, and Theo. Contributions in Chuck Donnell's memory may be made to Carleton College, One North College, Northfield, MN 55057.
