PERSONAL PAPERS

The Charles A. Watkins Papers came to the University in November of 1972 as a gift from his widow, Mrs. Reita Watkins, shortly after the death of the professor of English Literature. Though the Collection is small in volume, it nevertheless represents Watkins entire output during a rela-tively short professional career. Materials comprising the Papers were acquired from his home study, the place where Watkins was accustomed to doing most of his work.

The greatest bulk of these papers consists of notes and writings on Med-ieval and Black literature. These notes appear in the personal papers section of this collection under the heading TEACHING NOTES and RESEAllCll NOTES. This distinction is only approximate and much overlapping will be found. Writings of Watkins appear with their notes under SPEECHES AND WRITINGS.

Black Studies at the University of Washington is an interdisciplinary major. Although he taught in the Black Studies Program, Charles A. Watkins was hired and paid under the English Department budget, thus he was ultimately responsible to the English Department. Interoffice cor-respondence of the Black Studies P~ogram and the English Department fre-quently overlaps.

Two folders of confidential material are located at the end of this col-lection and are not to be used by unauthorized persons.
