Last RiverDogs Game: May 7 Leonardo Molina’s base knock down the third base line scored Dalton Blaser, making the Charleston RiverDogs walk-off winners, 3-2, over Lexington to cap a 5-2 homestand in front of 5,190 fans on Monday night at Joe Riley Park. The right field replacement off the bench, Blaser came through in another crucial run-scoring play when he grounded an RBI hit through the hole to score shortstop Wilkerman Garcia in the sixth. Starting pitcher Rony Garcia turned in seven quality innings, allowing two runs (one earned) with seven strikeouts to match the longest outing of his career. Greg Weissert (1-2) tossed the final two innings scoreless to pick up the win as Charleston improved to over .500 for the first time since a 5- 4 start to the season on April 13. Doggie Bites: Drop the Mic: The RiverDogs walked it off for the fourth time this season to cap off a 5-2 homestand. Leonardo Molina’s game winner in the bottom of the ninth was the Dominican Republic native’s second walk-off hit with Charleston in his career (he collected a walk-off single on April 7, 2017, also against Lexington). It marked the second walk-off win of the homestand after Chris Hess clinched the series over Asheville with a knock in the tenth on Thursday. Hanging All Zeroes: Charleston improved to 5-2 on the homestand, claiming three wins in shutout fashion. The RiverDogs had a combined two-hitter on Wednesday against Asheville, and Garrett Whitlock extended his scoreless innings streak to 25 on Saturday in the Dogs’ game two win over Lexington. All four of Charleston’s shutout wins have come at Joe Riley Park this season. RiverDogs pitching overall did not allow a run for 23 straight innings until Lexington broke up the bid with an RBI double from Emmanuel Rivera in the fourth inning Monday. Northern Tour: Charleston heads North to open a seven day road trip, starting with a three-game series in Lakewood against the BlueClaws on Wednesday night and finishing with a four-game tilt in Hagerstown. The trip will be the only meetings against the Phillies and Nationals affiliates in the first-half. Both Northern Division clubs will visit The Joe back- to-back in identical series in Charleston from August 7-13 in the second-half. Over the Hump: With their homestand finale win, the RiverDogs are back over .500 for the first time since April 13 when the Holy City got out to a 5-4 start to the season. After being handed their largest loss of the season by the Legends, 11-4 on Friday, the RiverDogs have rattled off three in a row to match their season-high win streak. Hess Heating Up: After playing above the .300 mark for most of April, Hess’s average dropped to .280 at the end of April. In his first homestand of the new month, Hess went 12-for-24 to raise his average back to .333. His now .333 average ranks fifth among qualified SAL hitters while his .982 OPS places him in second in the circuit. It was the Best of Times, it was the Worst of Times: Charleston enters Wednesday’s matchup with the best ERA (2.39) and the least runs allowed (91) in the league. Pitchers have allowed the least walks (67) and their 303 strikeouts ranks second. Offensively, the Dogs have scored the least runs. They have gotten their opportunities, but Charleston is hitting .207 with runners in scoring position, last in the SAL. Don’t Start Without Me: Charleston’s starting pitchers have a 1.42 ERA in their last nine outings collectively. Since April 17th, starters have a 1.88 ERA in 110 innings. Over that 19-game span, starters have struck out 121 batters while walking just 13. The RiverDogs are 11-9 during that stretch. You Mess with the Bull(pen), you get the Horns: The RiverDogs bullpen went the first 13 1/3 innings before allowing a run in May. Brian Trieglaff (3 IP) and Matt Wivinis (1 IP) continued the pen’s reign on Sunday without allowing a baserunner in four innings while Greg Weissert yielded just one hit in two scoreless frames on Monday night. After allowing no more than a run just once in the first 18 games of the season, the Charleston pen has started off the season on a dominant run, allowing just 19 earned runs in 106 innings to start the year (good for a 1.61 ERA). Pinstriped Prospects: Once again, the RiverDogs tap into one of the premier farm systems in baseball with the New York Yankees. Recently rated the second-best farm system by Baseball America pre-season and the sixth-best by MLB.com, the Bronx Bombers boast five of MLB.com’s Preseason Top-100 prospects. Charleston’s current roster features three of the Yankees’ Top-30 prospects (MLB.com, BA): INF Oswaldo Cabrera (--, #26), RHP Alexander Vargas (--, #28), and RHP Rony Garcia (--, #29). In 2017, the Yankees led all of baseball in organizational winning percentage (.602) between the Major and minor leagues and featured seven of their eight domestic affiliates in the postseason. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E LEX 0 0 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 2 5 0 CSC 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 1 3 9 1 Charleston RiverDogs Game Notes Game 32 Charleston RiverDogs (16-15) vs. Lakewood BlueClaws (16-15) FirstEnergy Park, Lakewood, NJ 6:35 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2018 LHP Dalton Lehnen (2-1, 1.95) Today’s Starters LHP Will Stewart (3-0, 1.86) South Atlantic League 2018 First Half Standings Northern Division W L GB Delmarva (Orioles) 21 10 - Kannapolis (White Sox) 20 11 1.0 West Virginia (Pirates) 17 13 3.5 Greensboro (Marlins) 15 14 5.0 Lakewood (Phillies) 16 15 5.0 Hagerstown (Nationals) 10 21 11.0 Hickory (Rangers) 9 19 10.5 Southern Division W L GB Augusta (Giants) 20 10 - Rome (Braves) 18 12 2.0 Columbia (Mets) 17 14 3.5 Charleston (Yankees) 16 15 4.5 Lexington (Royals) 14 15 5.5 Asheville (Rockies) 10 19 9.5 Greenville (Red Sox) 8 23 12.5 RiverDogs Quick Stats 1 st Half Record: 16-15 2 nd Half Record: 0-0 Road Record: 5-9 Home Record: 11-6 Current Streak: W3 Current Road Streak: L1 Current Home Streak: W3 This Road Trip: - Last Homestand: 5-2 Last Five: 4-1 Last Ten: 6-4 Team AVG (rank): .245 (8th) Team HR (rank): 17 (11th) Runs Scored (rank): 104 (14th) Team ERA (rank): 2.39 (1st) Team K (rank): 303 (2nd) Team SV (rank): 7 (T10th) 2018 vs. LWD: 0-0 Upcoming Matchups (subject to change) --- Listen to the RiverDogs on 1250 WTMA and online at www.riverdogs.com.
