LETTER FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

First, let me say thank you for the tremendous welcome all of Niner Nation has extended to my family and me during our first full academic year.

This past season was a remarkable year. We had championship performances from our track and field programs, saw our men’s soccer and women’s basketball teams advance to post-season play, had our men’s and women’s golf programs represented by individuals at the NCAA championships and witnessed some stellar performances that remind us why we love college athletics so much.

I enjoyed watching our teams perform over this past year and have been impressed at every turn with the talent and character of our student-athletes. I loved being a part of their triumphs and being able to celebrate alongside them. And I, like you, look forward to many more celebrations in the coming year.

At the same time, we have been busy building our program for the future. We have been working on our 10-year athletics facility master plan and our brand assessment while constantly evaluating our fans’ game-day experience. We’ve been intentional about reaching out to young alums, using social media to attract new fans and listening to the comments of our fan base.

We have hired several new coaches to lead our programs. Ron Sanchez signed a heralded recruiting class in men’s basketball. New coach Will Healy showed us the energy, enthusiasm and passion around which he builds his culture. Anthony Davison led our women’s tennis team to an unbeaten season at home, an 11-match win streak and the third-highest win total in school history.

More recently, we hired rising stars Ashley Chastain as softball coach and Robert Woodard as baseball coach and named Ragean Hill as our Executive Associate Athletics Director. Through each hiring process, the potential and buzz about our program came through loud and clear. That energy is powered by the passion and pride of Niner Nation. Your support is critical to the growth of our program.

Thank you for all you do for our university, our teams and our student-athletes.

Sincerely,

Mike HillDirector of AthleticsCharlotte 49ers

SPIRIT GROUPS

The Charlotte 49ers’ spirit groups entertain and enthuse Niner Nation. Charlotte’s marching and basketball pep band, cheerleaders, Gold Dusters and, of course, Norm, bring their own versions of energy and antics to 49ers home games.

While we see them on the sidelines and in the stands supporting our teams, the spirit groups work behind the scenes on their craft to deliver on Game Day. Several of our best have gone on to perform for the professional organizations here in Charlotte.

In addition, these groups have their own competitions to prepare for — and just as they represent the 49ers well at home contests, they have made a name for themselves at national events.

While the 49ers continue to impress at their national competitions, Niner Nation is lucky enough to see their performances up close throughout the school year. Each year, they entertain with great displays of athleticism, grace, humor and music and each year they build on the tradition of giving Niner Nation a first-class atmosphere in which to enjoy 49ers games.

Athletics Annual Report 13

ATHLETIC FOUNDATIONPURPOSEThe Charlotte 49ers Athletic Foundation provides scholarship assistance to over 400 male and female student-athletes in 18 varsity sports. Established in 1969, the Athletic Foundation has developed into a vitally important support group, pursuing excellence, integrity and pride in the University’s athletic program. The 49er Club, the Athletic Foundation’s official booster organization, offers membership to both individuals and businesses.

METHODS OF CONTRIBUTIONAlumni and friends of the Charlotte 49ers support athletic and academic excellence through a variety of annual and special gifts. Each donor can elect to give in a way that best suits his or her personal preference. The most common methods of giving are listed below:

Cash and Other Gifts: Includes company and personal checks, American Express, VISA and MasterCard, as well as the donation of stocks, securities and real estate.

Employer Matching Gifts: Doubles or triples the impact of your gift and increases your membership level and associated benefits. Contact the Athletic Foundation for more information on matching gifts.

Athletic Scholarship Endowments: Can be named in honor of an individual or organization. Provides annually for a student-athlete’s tuition, room, meals, books and fees.

In-Kind Gifts: Includes any professional service, product or equipment which is of use to the Athletic Foundation.

Planned and Estate Gifts: Includes life income arrangements from trusts, annuities, pooled income funds, etc., as well as life insurance policies and individual estate bequests such as cash or real estate.

TAX IMPLICATIONSAll contributions to the 49er Club are considered gifts to the Charlotte 49ers Athletic Foundation and are credited at full value for purposes of the member’s Athletic Foundation record. Due to changes in the tax code that went into effect January 1, 2018, the University’s tax counsel has advised that amounts paid to obtain seat licenses are no longer treated as 80% deductible as charitable contributions.

Additionally, amounts contributed to the 49er Club to guarantee seating at Jerry Richardson Stadium in the Green Tier and Gold Tier FSL sections are considered a benefit to the FSL holder and do not qualify as a charitable deduction for income tax purposes. Amounts given to the 49er Club above the applicable required giving level do qualify as a charitable deduction for income tax purposes to the extent the contribution exceeds the value of any benefits received. Each tier’s contribution level is based on the number of FSLs owned by the donor. For example, if a Green Tier FSL Holder who owns four FSLs contributes $600, then $350 of the contribution amount would qualify as a charitable deduction for income tax purposes. If a Gold Tier FSL Holder who owns four FSLs contributes $5,000, then $3,500 of the contribution amount would qualify as a charitable deduction for income tax purposes. If a 49er Club member does not own a FSL, then his/her contribution would qualify for a charitable deduction to the extent it exceeds the value of any benefits received. As always, we encourage you to consult your tax advisor for more information or specific guidelines related to your personal giving.

PRIORITY POINT SYSTEMAthletic Foundation donors receive priority seating assignments in the Charlotte 49ers football stadium for football season tickets and in Halton Arena for men’s basketball season tickets. The Priority Point System also applies to seating for regular-season road games and post-season tournaments/championships/bowl games. Priority points are assigned as follows:

• 4 points for each consecutive year of 49er Club membership

• 3 points for each $100 donated during the current fiscal year

• 2 points for each $100 donated during the donor’s membership history

• 2 points per $100 for FSL total paid

• 1 point for each consecutive year of purchasing men’s basketball season tickets as a current 49er Club member

• 1 point for each consecutive year of purchasing football season tickets as a current 49er Club member

The following is an example of how the Priority Point System is applied: A 49er Club member has donated $1,000 per year for 8 consecutive years, purchased 4 Green Tier FSLs and has purchased men’s basketball season tickets for 5 consecutive years.

2019 - 2020 ATHLETIC EXPENSE BUDGET

EXPLOSIVE GROWTHWhen the Charlotte 49ers entered the decade, our Athletics program financially reflected that of a competitive Division I non-football institution. Compensation, scholarships and travel for the then 16-program department compared favorably to our colleagues in the Atlantic 10 Conference and across the Division I-AAA landscape. Almost 78% of all expenditures fell into one of those three aforementioned areas, with equipment, game operations and officiating also contributing in a significant way to the outflow. From a revenue perspective, the program relied heavily on the student athletic fee, as other contributing revenue made up only 18% of the projected needs.

A decade later has witnessed the full integration of an FBS football program, the addition of women’s golf to the 49ers’ offerings, and a significantly enhanced facilities landscape. The “big three” of compensation, scholarships and travel still make up almost three-quarters of all projected expenses, but significant investments in nutrition and meals, game guarantees, and facility operations have nudged themselves into the conversation during budget discussions.

Non-student fee support now makes up close to 30% of projected needs, reducing, as a percentage of revenue, the reliance on student support. Significant increases in conference and NCAA proceeds, as well as football game guarantees, ticket sales, sponsorships and foundation support have all combined to bolster the resources available to compete at the FBS level.
