CANCELLATION POLICY: If a class is canceled, you will be notified by phone and issued a full refund within 30

business days. If you wish to withdraw from a class, please notify the Renaissance Academy at 941-505-0130 no

later than 5:00 pm three (3) business days prior to the first session of the class in order to receive a refund.

Individuals who cancel after the start of the class will not receive a refund. Unless otherwise stated, a fourteen

The gentle, flowing movements of Tai Chi promote better health, leg strength, and an overall feeling of well-being, according

to the Mayo Clinic. The rhythmic movements and controlled breathing of Tai Chi, or “meditation in motion,” requires

practitioners to live in the present, thereby reducing stress and producing an inner calm. Tai Chi is low impact, reduces blood

pressure, and is especially suitable for older adults. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing, and shoes. Instructor: Ms. Sharon

Digital Camera Basics 101 $45

Enrollment is limited to 12 students. Do you have a digital camera and not sure where to start? Are you confused by all of the

cryptic symbols and dials that are all over the camera? If so, this class is for you. We will review the different elements of the

camera and how they work together. We will also look at the symbols and labels one by one and explain what they are and

more importantly, when to use them. We will alternate between classroom instruction and field instruction so the student can

get hands-on experience with their camera. Class size is limited to give one-on-one assistance. Optional workbook offered.

Intro to DSLR Photography $45

Enrollment is limited to 12 students. Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras or DSLRs as they are known, have really become

affordable in the past few years. There is no other type of camera that offers the control and options that gives the photographer

all the tools that they desire to create stunning photos. DSLR cameras often intimidate folks who upgrade from a point and

shoot or other types of cameras. There are so many buttons and symbols that the camera can seem daunting and confusing at

first. However, in the “Intro to DSLR Photography” class, we will cover all of the dials and what all of the cryptic symbols

mean. We will take it slow and step-by-step so at the completion of the course, the photographer will know how to operate

their camera. We will alternate between classroom instruction and field work. This way students get a chance to practice what

you need. This ten-week course will give you all the tools, encouragement, and support you need to get your writing project

finished. James Abraham, the editor and publisher of more than 300 books, leads a collegial, insightful series of classes designed

to bring out the writer in you. The modular design of this series is such that participants can take the full 10 week series for a

fee of $250 or pick and choose the modules most helpful. Any five (5) classes can be taken for a fee of $135. Participants will

Stuck on starting your novel or memoir? In this session, class participants will exchange information about their goals,

listen to an author discuss all aspects of how her book came to be, and hear a lecture about organizing one's writing.

Participants are encouraged to bring a writing sample. In addition, participants will sign up for their one-on-one, half-

hour sessions that will be held weekly.

The best writers know how to set goals and work toward them. In this lecture, you will hear how to organize your

story or book, how to stay focused, and the importance of sticking to your theme. You'll get an opportunity to read

from your work as a way of starting a weekly process of collegial, shared critiquing.

Don't just push your characters around; give them jobs with meaning and make them work for your best story. In this

lesson you'll learn how to give characters their meaning and body, how to use minor characters to illuminate the whole,

and how to construct and maintain a story pyramid.

Make your characters come alive by learning how to write lively, engaging dialogue. You'll learn how to construct

effective dialogue and the importance of making dialogue part of the environment.

In this informative session, you'll learn "what mama never told you" about love. Sex is one of the most common yet

least understood subjects in writing. You’ll learn how to write about sex in a tasteful manner that helps move your

story along instead of getting bogged down in all the details.

Get some sea air, a nosh, and an opportunity to learn how to write about the world around you while sunning yourself

on a literary cruise around Charlotte Harbor. In this session, participants will meet on the waterfront to take a trip

around Charlotte Harbor. Pot luck is encouraged. Each participant will be asked to record specific aspects of the

environment and will hear a lecture on how to incorporate the built and natural environments into their work.

HC0824-007 “Selling One’s Work” $30 Wednesday, February 18 at 1:00pm – 2:30pm (1.5 hours)

The best incentive for writing is making money from your words. In this session, you'll learn different ways of writing

a query letter and assembling a submission package for agents. You'll also learn how to sell and market your work

even as it is being written. A guest author will discuss how he/she markets his/her work.

HC0824-008 “Plot & Pacing” $30 Wednesday, February 25 at 1:00pm – 2:30pm (1.5 hours)

You can't dance unless you get the beat and your writing will not flow unless it has rhythm. The key to any story, as

in any song, is a sense of rhythm and flow. Plot and pacing are critical to providing readers with a backbeat, if you

will, to drive the story. You will learn how to consciously incorporate these elements into your writing.

HC0824-009 “Conflict” $30 Wednesday, March 4 at 1:00pm – 2:30pm (1.5 hours)

No one likes to argue, but it makes for great drama. The world turns not on peace and love, but instead on conflict.

In this session, you’ll learn how to make your work more interesting by constructing and controlling juxtaposition,

contrapuntal elements, appositives, and other factors of discord and tension.

If you have ever found it hard to end something, then be sure to attend this session. All good things must end, and best

things end well. This class will discuss how to bring loose ends together; how to tie the knot in such a way that the

reader is left with precisely the impression the writer seeks to convey.

On July 2, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1964, one of the most significant civil

rights achievements in U.S. history. Fifty years later, here we are today. The phenomenal success of the book and movie, "The

Help" and "12 Years a Slave" is an indicator Americans are interested in and ready to know more about the role of race in this

society. These conversations offer participants an opportunity to learn and talk about the impact of race in the past, present,

Self-Defense for Seniors and Everyone ________________________ _ $25

Not everyone desires to carry a firearm for protection. This is a non-combat program presented by an NRA Certified instructor.

You will explore common sense strategies and non-traditional tools necessary to protect yourself and your family in an assault.

You will learn about tools you probably already have that should be with you at all times. Understanding simple site analysis

can make the difference between surviving an attack, being seriously injured, or worse. How to retreat, when and how to

successfully hide, and what you can do if retreat is not an option will all be discussed. You will be able to identify weapons

and understand their operation and weaknesses. We will also examine the Florida Castle Rule, Stand Your Ground legislation

Women have on average a seven year longer life expectancy than men. Most married women leave the investments management

to their spouse and almost 90% of women will be solely responsible for their finances at some point in their life. Single, married,

or widowed, it is imperative that women at least know what they do not know, so they can manage their finances and protect

themselves. Over the course of 4 weeks, you will learn the basics in a comfortable environment with other women. A

comprehensive binder of information will also be provided. Week I: The basics of bonds and the advantages of bond laddering.

Digital photography has come a long way in a very short time. The days of dropping off the film at the drug store to be processed

are pretty much over. The invention of digital photography has revolutionized how the world sees and views images. We now

have the technology to make sure we get the "shot" right on site. No more surprises when opening the envelope from the drug

store. This class will teach the fundamentals of photography, such as ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, and how they work

together to create an image. This class will also go over other equipment that assists photographers in different situations. The

instructor will make suggestions for buying or upgrading cameras and equipment. The fundamental rules of photography will

also be taught, such as the rule of thirds, simplifying backgrounds, and leading lines, to name a few. Upon completion of this

course, the student will be an informed buyer, as well as a competent photographer. The student will also understand different

ways to display their work. Anyone with a digital camera is welcome to attend. The instructor will be using a DSLR to

demonstrate examples. The students should have a working knowledge of their particular camera and what most of the buttons

With the invention of the digital negative had to come a way to "develop" the photos. There are different programs out there;

however one of the most popular choices is Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Elements allows the photographer to organize

use to get their photos to jump off the page. We will cover the organizer, Camera RAW, layers, masking, adjustment layers,

filters, and tools. Students will also learn how to get their prints to match their screen. The instructor will provide practice files

heroines, but in her supporting characters as well. Her characters reveal themselves through dialogue, which makes the novels

eminently adaptable to stage and screen. She is famous for her style and the architecture of her plots. She creates great scenes.

We will explore these aspects of her art in her most famous novel Pride and Prejudice and see some of the most famous scenes

Since their discovery in the desert caves of Qumran in 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls have been a source of fascination and debate.

What are the Scrolls? Who wrote them? Learn about the isolated, ascetic community that created and secreted these documents

long ago, and about the cloak-and-dagger exploits of the archaeologists who recovered them. Then explore what these rare

documents tell us about the emergence of Judaism and Christianity in the ancient world. The War Scroll, Copper Scroll, and

Temple Scroll (that provides blueprints for the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem) are three of the documents included in

our discussion. This course combines the tools of history, geography, archaeology, and religious study to examine what words

Memory, Motive, and Method: A Workshop on Writing____________________ ___ $48

with others who have similar goals, you’ll review basics such as beginnings, middles, and endings; how to grab the attention

of readers or listeners; how to keep them engaged; and ways to keep motivated once the class ends. For those who've already

Wouldn’t it be great if you could have the perfect exposure every time? Have you ever wanted to take a picture of the inside of

a building however, either the windows were exposed properly and the room was black or the room was exposed properly and

the windows were all white? Now the digital photographer can have the best of both worlds. This technology is called High

Dynamic Range (HDR). Basically, what happens is the photographer takes multiple shots of the same scene and blends them

together in the computer to capture all the detail. We will show you step by step how to achieve professional results. We will

also go out in the field for one class to capture photos. The next class we will process the pictures on the computer. You will

be processing your own images in this class. Instructor: Mr. Spencer Pullen



Photography: Shoot & Process________________________________________ $80

This is a unique class. This class will alternate between photographing in the field and processing photos in class. We will start

by going on location and taking photos. Questions will be answered during this time for camera processes and composition.

The following class we will be using Adobe Photoshop Elements to process the photos. We will look at a wide array of options

to enhance or fix any areas that need attention. Workflow options, color management, and more topics will be discussed. Any

type of camera is welcome. Students should have a basic understanding of how to use the computer, saving files, locating files,

opening files, and launching applications. Laptops with Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 will be available for use. However,

please bring a flash drive to save your work on. If you would like, you can bring in your own laptop with Adobe Photoshop

Elements 11 installed. Please bring paper and a pen for notes. Instructor: Mr. Spencer Pullen

Digital Photographer's Toolbox________________________________________ $80

Students entering this class MUST have a digital camera and have a good understanding of their computer. The Digital

Photographer’s Toolbox class was created to help photographers shoot in almost any condition. Most photographers have a

variety of options to photograph a particular subject. This class starts out with the camera basics and composition. This will

give the student a strong foundation and knowledge to use later in the class. After the basics are covered, we will look at more

advanced topics, such as High Dynamic Range (HDR), lighting and Adobe Photoshop Elements. After this class, the goal is

for the student to look at a particular scene and know which solution is going to best work for them. There is no wrong way to

do something, some solutions give different results than others. A photographer that is armed with this knowledge will be able

to shoot in almost any condition. This class is also designed to introduce the student to a variety of photographic techniques.

The instructor will be using a DSLR to demonstrate the examples. It is also highly recommended that the student has a flash

drive to bring their photos to class and so they are able to save their projects to during the class. Instructor: Mr.

Paint Along With Me________________________________________ $60

Do you love landscapes? Would you like to create some of your own? Using the medium of your choice, and working from

photo references provided by the instructor, students will paint one piece each week. The instructor will guide your progress

by demonstrating each step, from composition to the blocking-in of values, to the finishing touches that will make the painting

come alive. We will take our inspiration from four of the world’s greatest landscape artists of the 19th and 20th centuries: John

Singer Sargent, Vincent Van Gogh, Robert Henri, and Andrew Wyeth. Water color painters: bring four sheets of water color

paper, 11 X 14 inches. Oil or acrylic painters: bring four inexpensive canvas panels, 11 X 14 inches. Instructor: Ms. Roxanne
