The first round will beplayed at 2:30 p.m.Wednesday and Thursdayon the home fields of thehigher-seeded teams. Thequarterfinals will be Sat-urday, with the semifinalson Nov. 13 and the champi-onship game Nov. 17. Sitesand times for all gamesbeyond the first round willbe announced later.

Cape Henlopen (14-1)will open the tournamentat home Wednesdayagainst 16th-seededMount Pleasant (9-5-1).No. 2 seed Delmar (14-1),which lost to Cape Henlo-pen in the championshipgame last season, will host15th-seeded St. ThomasMore (11-3-1) in the firstround on Thursday.

Wilmington, Del. -- The Charter School of Wilmington's field hockey squad is off to anotherhot start at 10-0. One of the reasons behind their success has been junior forward MorganLamey. So far this season, Lamey has posted 10 goals and 6 assists for the Force.

The Community News caught up with Morgan where she spoke about how she got her startplaying field hockey, the team's success and plans for the future.

Q: How did you get started playing field hockey?A: Started my freshmen year, it was the first time I picked up a stick. My friends got meinvolved, they loved Coach Cindy (DePrisco), and they encouraged me to give it a shot.Luckily, I picked it up pretty easily.

Q: In high school most athletes have been playing their particular sport since they were veryyoung. How has your experience been different and what have you learned in only a fewyears?A: I came in with a wooden stick and these huge shin guards; they pulled me aside and taughtme everything I know. I've learned so much. I played soccer forever and didn't know toomuch about field hockey going in. But, Coach Cindy and the rest of the team have been great.We had a team sleepover kind of thing and the girls were so great, that's when I knew I wouldlove being a part of this team and playing the sport.

Q: The team is undefeated right now, what are the team's goals for the rest of the season?A: We would love to have an undefeated record. We're going to do our best and hopefullythat's enough. We're definitely going to give it our best, that's for sure.

Q: Do you plan on attending college? Perhaps continuing your field hockey career at theuniversity level?A: I definitely plan on going to college. Playing is a possibility. I have no clue where I want togo, yet. Somewhere warm!

Wilmington Charter field hockey forward Alexandra Mash is this week's WDEL Female High

School Athlete of the Week.

Lexi scored a combined 6 goals in recent Blue Hen Conference victories over Appoquinimink

and Hodgson.

The sophomore is quick to pass the credit for her scoring success to her teammates.

"I finish it (the goal-scoring play). You don't see all the other girls in the (news)paper with the

assists, you just see the goal who scored, but it's really a team effort."

The Force are off to a 12-0 start this year after falling in the opening game of the state

tournament last year, and Lexi says confidence has been the key.

"We have a bigger drive this year and are more confident. We came into preseason knowing

this is our year and we're really confident."

Lexi says the team is especially excited that boosters have raised money for the team to practice

and play on turf at Hockessin Montessori School. She thinks the surface might have been part of

the reason they struggled with Tower Hill in last year's state tournament.

"Turf is just a completely different game. You have to have your stick all the way on the ground.

You have to play completely different and it was tough to adjust not playing on turf every day."

Lexi says her favorite subject as a school that focuses on math and science is in fact math.

"Just numbers. I just like dealing with numbers rather than grammar."

Latest storm delays state tournamentsField hockey, boys soccer pushed to Friday, Saturday

The nor'easter that blew into Delaware on Wednesday forced the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic

Association to juggle its state tournament schedules in field hockey and boys soccer.

First-round field hockey games scheduled for Wednesday and today have been moved to Friday and

Saturday at the home fields of the higher-seeded teams. The lone exception is the Wilmington Christian-

Charter of Wilmington game, which will be played at 11 a.m. Saturday at Caravel.

The field hockey quarterfinals will be played Tuesday, with the semifinals Nov. 15 and the championship

game Nov. 17. Sites and times for the later rounds will be announced next week.

All first-round boys soccer games scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday will now be played Saturday.

Some of the venues have been changed, with Dover High School hosting four games, Appoquinimink

hosting two and Caravel hosting two.

The boys soccer quarterfinals will be played Nov. 14, with the semifinals Nov. 17 and the championship

game Nov. 20. Sites and times for the later rounds will be announced next week.

The DIAA Volleyball State Tournament will continue as scheduled, with semifinal games to be played tonight

at St. Mark's. Second-seeded Padua (15-2) will meet sixth-seeded Concord (15-2) in the first match at 6,

followed by top-seeded St. Mark's (17-0) against fourth-seeded Ursuline (13-4).

The DIAA Cross-Country Championships will be held as scheduled on Saturday at Brandywine Creek State

Park. The Division II girls race will begin at 1 p.m., followed by the Division I girls at 1:40, Division II boys at

2:20 and Division I boys at 3.

The DIAA Football State Tournament committee will meet as scheduled Sunday morning to determine the

fields for the Division I and Division II football tournaments. The football playoffs will begin as scheduled next

weekend.

WILMINGTON — Wil-mington Christian's Kel-ly Ogle and member ofthe field hockey squadreceived an encouragingtext message from a fel-low teammate Saturdaymorning. The messagereminded the 14th-seedWarriors if they were go-ing to compete with anundefeated Charterteam, they would need towork as a team and afamily.

The Warriors didmore than compete.They fought in a long de-fensive battle andknocked out third-seed-ed Charter with 1-0 over-time win at Bob People'sStadium in the openinground of the DIAA FieldHockey State Tourna-ment.

With a little more thana minute left in the firstovertime, Ogle brokeaway from a Charter de-fender, set up her shotand unloaded with aguaranteed tip fromfreshman Sydney Baf-fone.

"At first when I hit it, Ididn't really react; Ididn't think that it wasgoing in. It was kind ofunreal," said Baffone,who was still in shock af-ter she scored the lonegoal of the game.

"My coach told me todish it off as soon as I gotit," said Ogle. "It feltreally good, and Icouldn't have done itwithout my team."

Wilmington Christian,the Diamond State Con-ference champions whoearned that title for thevery first time, will facePolytech in the nextround at 4 p.m. Tuesdayat Appoquinimink.

The Warriors (9-4-3)played four overtimegames during the regu-

lar season, so a fifthwasn't completely out ofthe question when coachPam Love envisioned thematchup.

"We've played a lot ofovertime this year, soyeah, I probably couldexpect it," said a chokedup Love about her team."I know they play withtheir heart, and I got togive them credit forthat."

The Force (15-1) facedthe same outcome lastyear, when they fell toTower Hill in the openinground.

"I am so so proud ofthese girls," said coachCindy DePrisco, addingthat this year's squadwas the best team she'sever coached. "SinceAug. 15 to now, theirwork ethic has beenamazing, and they justhave not stopped. Wenever had an overtimesituation at all, so thatworried me if that hap-pened."

Delmar's Ellis namedplayer of the yearThe News Journal

Delmar junior Sara Ellis hasbeen named the field hockey Playerof the Year by the Delaware Interscho-lastic Field Hockey Coaches Associa-tion.

The group also announced its All-State teams.

Ellis and the Wildcats went 17-2 thisseason, with their only losses to eventualstate champion Cape Henlopen. Ellisscored all three Delmar goals in a semi-final win over Polytech.

Caravel's Susan Wiley was namedCoach of the Year after guiding the Bucsto a 15-3 record and a berth in the statesemifinals.

DELMAR — When peoplefirst meet Sara Ellis, one ofthe first topics of conversa-tion usually becomes exactlyhow she got her nickname,"Booter."

But these days, Ellis is be-coming known more than justbeing the Delmar High fieldhockey player with the inter-esting nickname.

Ellis, a junior midfielder

for Delmar, was named the2012 Field Hockey Player ofthe Year by Delaware Inter-scholastic Field HockeyCoaches Association afterleading the Wildcats to theDIAA state championshipgame for the second year in arow.

It is an honor well-de-served, according to Jodi Hol-lamon, her coach at Delmar.

Ellis, who scored 24goals and had seven as-sists last season, creditedher teammates.

"It's nice, it definitelyis, but I couldn't have doneit without a lot of peoplebehind me and the goodold Lord," Ellis said. "It'snot just me. I think itshould be our whole teambecause the whole teamsteps up and they're awe-some."

Ellis said she has en-joyed the past couple ofseasons, despite the factthat she and her Wildcatteammates came up shortin the state championshipgame by just one goal twoyears in a row to CapeHenlopen.

She is already backplaying with the Shore-birds club travel teamthat will compete all win-ter and into the spring. El-lis said she can't wait for

her senior season."I'm ready," said Ellis,

who started playing fieldhockey in the sixth grade."We want to be back [inthe state championshipgame] and we know wewill, no matter what. If ittakes working harderthan it did this year, thenwe'll be back there.

"We're going to get[Cape Henlopen]. They'rea great team and they'retough competition, but wewant to be there and wewant to come out with avictory next year - thirdtime is a charm."

Oh, and about thatnickname, "Booter." Ithas nothing to do with thesport of field hockey.

When Ellis was born inSalisbury, Md., 17 yearsago, her parents Bobbyand Marti Ellis couldn't

exactly decide on a namefor their new baby. Ellis'siblings immediatelystarted calling her "Boo-ter." Her parents official-ly named her Sara about amonth later, but it was toolate. "Booter" stuck.

"For about a month Ididn't have a name," shesaid, "It's just been 'Boo-ter' ever since then. I lovebeing called 'Booter.'"

On the field hockeyfield, Ellis is also know asa leader. She is committedto play at William and Ma-ry but isn't really lookingthat far down the road justyet. Right now, she's stillhaving the time of her lifeplaying for Hollamon.

"In the eighth grade,Hollamon kind of took meand she helped me out alot," Ellis said. "She's likemy second mom and I love

her to death. She's does somuch for rne and she's oneof the major factors inhow I got to this point. It'sjust really nice to havesomeone like that."

Hollamon hopes herother players will try toemulate Ellis. It's not justthe goals that make Ellissuch a complete player.It's her eye for defenseand willingness to distrib-ute the ball that round outher game.

"She would be just aslikely to pass the ball asshe would to shoot," saidHollamon. "She wouldquickly praise her team-mates and never want totake any credit. As a ju-nior, she is only going tocontinue to grow and de-velop and keep gettingbetter and better, which isa great thing for 2013 and

Delmar."Ellis is also big on her

school, which is one of thesmallest in the state.

The biggest thing shesaid she wanted forChristmas was "a newturf field for Delmar HighSchool. That would helpus out a lot."

"Delmar's an awesomeschool," Ellis said. "We'redefinitely a close familyhere and I think everyonehas your back when yougo into situations. They'rethere to cheer you on andthey're there to catch youwhen you fall. It's a greatschool with a great staffand great people."
