At this week’s meeting we were delighted to welcome Shradd Hasharmaa, a prospective member, who made herself known to us at the Bright Lights, Winter Nights event in Pridham Plaza last month. Shradd is from Nepal, and has been in Australia for 15 years. She was a Rotaractor in Nepal and her father is very involved with Rotary Club in Kathmandu. Members will remember that we welcomed Bishnu Hari Dahal, a member of the Rotary Club of Matribhumi Baluwatar in August 2017 and completed a banner exchange with him. Shradd’s father, Santosh Sharma is the chairman of Music Nepal and is a Past President of his Rotary Club. Shradd lives in Langs Road and her daughter attends Ascot Vale West PS. Comparisons:

Meeting Report Wednesday August 7th 2019 There was a real ‘buzz’ in the room this week as we welcomed several guests to this first August meeting. Assistant Governor Ian Ada visited and spoke about current District news. We also welcomed Jenny Gallivan, Emma Merritt one of our successful NYSF candidates for 2020, David Heyes and Shradd Hasharmaa, a prospective member. Apologies were received from Len Seddon, Lyn Borghouts, Rachel Sumich and Peter Donnellan. Jenny Gallivan was an inspirational colleague during the Flem-Ken Festival of Arts & Ideas last year. From inception through planning, organising, implementation and with suggestions, connections and effort was a big part of its success. In recognition of her outstanding work, we are presenting her with the 2019 Vance Hilton Community Leadership Award. This award comes with a donation to charity of Jenny’s choice and membership of our club if chosen. Jenny has asked to donate the funds to the MAC students for the Gnurad Gundidj camp.
Chris Brock has already made a large contribution to our club through his work with Cody Bettannin on the youth programs, in particular the Sports Scholarships. He has also helped with the RORP project, designing the new logo. Chris was unable to at-tend the club changeover, so today, with assistance from Assis-tant Governor Ian Ada, I have great pleasure in acknowledging his contributions with a Royce Abbey Award.
Emma Merritt, a Year 11 student from Lowther Hall Girls School has been successful in obtaining a place at National Youth Science Forum in 2020. She has been allocated the Brisbane camp in the second half of January. Emma spoke and told us she is very interested in aviation and perhaps aeronautical engineering. She is a former student at Moonee Ponds West PS and was pleased to renew acquaintance with Chris Brock. I will see Emma on September 8th at the Orientation day at Swinburne University. Kate Stevanovic from Mount Alexander College spoke about a forthcoming student leadership camp which 6 of their students have been successful in applying for. The Gnurad Gundidj School for Student Leadership at Glenormiston from 12th October to 14th December. http://www.gnurad-gundidj.vic.edu.au/ Students are fundraising for the camp fees with a raffle. Kate distributed a raffle book which members contributed to. The club has also donated 2 items for the raffle whach will drawn on August 25th.

Reports: Anne McMahon—Art Show at Kensington Town Hall October 4th to 6th Anne showed and distributed posters and fliers for the Art Show. The Gallery 247 site is live and entries have started to come in already. Fliers for student art works have been distributed to local schools with positive re-sponses received from St Aloysius and MAC so far. A task list has been prepared and all members are asked to identify where they best fit int the schedule. Set up will take place from Wednesday 2nd to Friday 4th with the Gala Opening on the Friday evening. The Art Show will be open on Saturday 5th from 9am to 9pm and Sunday 6th from 9am to 4pm, Collection of unsold art works is on Monday 9am to 5pm. Sponsorship packages have been prepared and distributed. Several businesses have agreed to sponsorship including Beate McManus from McManus Law, Flemington Traders, the VRC and Nelson Alexander. Additional sponsorships are still being followed up by Allan, Lesley and Anne. All members are also asked to follow up on quality items for the Silent Auction, and to identify and bring along potential attendees at the Gala Opening night. Peter Cribb—Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds Peter was delighted to report that the first playground from the container sent over earlier this year has now been installed and officially opened in Ampara on Monday. Past District Governor Senake Ameresinghe, PP Pubudu de Zoysa and President Sarav Soundr from the Rotary Club of Columbo attended with President Dr Davaratna of the Rotary Club of Ampara as well as a number of Urban Council dignitaries and many Rotarians. This was the playground which was harvested from the Quantin Binnah Park in Werribee by Naturform Playgrounds. The container will be used as a community library after restoration, as was done with the container sent to Sputnik. The container currently storing playgrounds at Donations in Kind has been purchased by us and to reduce ongoing costs to the club, these playgrounds need to be unloaded and repacked into a leased container for shipment. Laurie Fisher has ordered a container so a Working Bee will be held on Saturday August 17th. People will be needed between 10am and 4pm in shifts of abut 2 hours. Due to space limitations, more than 6-8 people at a time is too crowded. Equipment will be unloaded, placed in a named space and marked with additional paint for easy identification in Sri Lanka. When reloaded, playgrounds will be separated by material as much as possible, again for ease of unloading in Sri Lanka. Peter or Sam will send out a roster. Lesley—Website http://www.rotaryflemington.org.au/ The new ClubRunner website is up and running although still in early stages. Calendar events, stories and project information are uploaded and other pages and materials will progressively find a home. Anyone with an interest is encouraged to explore, provide feedback and contribute stories. Your Member Access is YourName14583 Password as given to you by District last year. If you have forgotten, just reset. Western Emergency Relief Network—WERN With this cold weather, WERN are running very short on blankets and quilts. Also Manchester and towels in reasonable condition please.
