TOM’S TABLOID As your newly installed President, I would be remiss if, on behalf of the mem-bership, I didn’t thank Doug & Debra McGill for a job well done! Those of you who attended the Christmas brunch, the Sheridan Lake Rally or the Installa-tion Rally will not forget Debra’s entertaining way of getting everyone in-volved in an activity. Add to that the fun-filled caravans that they led over the summer months—it will be a year to be remembered. That said, I have to confess that, until mid-year, I had no idea that our 50th anniversary would be during my term as President. Needless-to-say...I am very honoured to represent the British Columbia Unit during this commemora-tive year.

Together with your new Board of Directors, we have planned another busy year for you. Highlights will be the 10th Annual Sheridan Lake Fishing Rally, our 50th Anniversary Rally in Merritt, a rally at the Abbotsford Air Show, the International Rally in Farmington, NM, the Region 10 supported Pendleton Round-Up Rally and a week-long caravan ending at the 2015-2016 Installation Rally. And, to keep everyone thinking about our 50th anniversary, there will be a draw for $50 at every event. This is another good reason to join us on October 24 to 26 for the Halloween Rally. Those who attended the 2014-2015 Installation Rally have pledged to support your new Board of Directors. This is now something that I am asking all Unit

members and affiliates to do. I am sure that you are aware that, save for a small staff in Jackson Center, your Unit, Region and International officers are all VOLUN-TEERS. Collectively they put in many hours of organizing activities and YOU are the beneficiary of their hard work. So, please keep this in mind next time an officer, commit-tee member or an event host requests the return of a telephone call or a response to an e-mail. They deserve the courtesy of a timely response. (more of the tabloid on page 3...)

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Pop tabs, pop tabs, pop tabs…. How could such a little piece of aluminum pay such big dividends? Our coordinator takes our contributions to a recycling depot and the funds are given to charity (In BC Unit’s case, to the Zajac Foundation). You wouldn’t believe the amount of pull tabs we collected from the North Cascade Wash-ington Unit at their Installation Rally — Thank you so much! Your contributions are most appreciated. So everybody ... keep your eyes open and on the lookout for pop top tabs and bring them to your next luncheon or rally.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

Alex & Arlene Matches

More from Tom…

So, I am asking you to think ahead, decide what activities interest you and then mark them on your calendar so that you can plan around them. Then, when the event is promoted the preceding month, you can advise the host(s) that you will be attending instead of them or the telephone committee having to call you.

On another note — have you seen Alex Matches’ great article in the RV TIMES? It started in the July/August issue and continues for nine issues. The magazine is published bi-monthly and is available at all Save-On-Foods, Overwaitea Foods, PriceSmart Foods, Coopers Foods, Lordco Auto Parts, plus many RV Dealers, Info Centres and Campgrounds. I am sure that you will find the story of their Airstream travels very interesting. You might even find your name in print! For those who might like to join us in South Surrey on Tuesday mornings for breakfast, a group of us meet at the ABC Country Restaurant at 9:30 am each week. Most of us have one of the breakfast specials which are less than $9.00 before a tip. If interested please contact me with the night before or early that morning and I will re-serve a space for you.

TREASURER’S REPORT — October 2014

ANOTHER DUES REMINDER [Note: The cut-off date for the 2015 International Directory is November 1st]

If you are among those who have not yet paid your 2015 International dues and you want to be listed in the 2015 International Directory, you must act quickly.

So, if this applies to you, STOP what you are doing and get your cheque books out. And, if you need to purchase a U.S. draft, then DO IT TODAY, not ... tomorrow or the next day! Think of both your Treasurer and of the person at International who must process these payments knowing that there are still more dues to come and that they are under the pressure of a looming deadline.

Tom will be making his next report to International the first week of November. This will ensure that all those who have paid their dues on time are included in the directory. Dues received after that date will continue to be forwarded to International, but such members will not be listed in the directory.

International dues are $65.00 U.S. and regular/affiliate dues are $25.00 Cdn. and $20.00 Cdn. respectively. Re-member that, if you write a cheque/check payable in a different currency, the banks charge a processing fee ($20.00 in Canada) on top of the rate to convert one currency to another. The fee can be avoided by purchasing a draft at your local bank.

Please mail dues to: Tom Akam 36 — 2120 King George Boulevard Surrey, BC, V4A 6Y8 Thank you.

WARNING! DO NOT WINTERIZE YOUR

TRAILER OR MOTORHOME

BEFORE OCTOBER 27, 2014

If you do, you are going to miss our last rally of the year which is also the

beginning of Tom’s year as President.

Hosted by Patrick & Janet Howell (phone 604-996-0953),

the Halloween Rally promises to be a

FUN-FILLED event.

You won’t be disappointed!

Getting your first Airstream is always such an exciting experience. New members Krista and Michael Roth from Sooke, BC sent along this photo of their new rig. How the Internet Started

In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a healthy young wife by the name of Dorothy. Dot Com was a comely woman, large of breast, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com. And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?" Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?" Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages say-ing what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the best price. The sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)." Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent. To prevent neighboring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying, Dot de-vised a system that only she and the drummers knew. It was known as Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmit ideas and pictures - Hebrew To The People (HTTP). And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS. And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother Wil-liam of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. Indeed he did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks. Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others." Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or eBay as it came to be known. He said, "We need a name that reflects what we are." Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators.” "YAHOO”, said Abraham. And because it was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com. Abraham's cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot's drums to locate things around the countryside. It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE). That is how it all began. And that's the truth.

Forwarded to me by Airstream friend and fellow Baja Caravaner,
