19

ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE: WORD COUNT

Assignment briefs requiring a written response should have a word count between 2500 - 3000 for Level 5 and 3000 - 3500 for Level 7. Learners must comply with the required total word count as stated on the assignment brief, within a margin of +/- 10%.

THE FOLLOWING ARE EXCLUDED FROM INCLUSION IN WORD COUNT IF USED AND NOT REQUIRED BY THE ASSIGNMENT BRIEF:

• An Introduction, for example Learners could use an introduction to outline their job role and introduce the organisation and/or department that they will be using to answer the assignment

• An Index

• Contents Page

• Headings

• Diagrams, Charts and Graphs

• Information contained within references

• Bibliographies

• Reflective statement to draw together learning from undertaking the assignment and how this has impacted the learners work

The above are optional elements and do not form part of the Learners answers to the assessment criteria and will not be marked. These optional elements are used to enhance learning, help scene set and provide evidence of further research/investigation but will not be marked.

When an assessment task requires Learners to produce presentation slides with supporting notes, the word count applies to the supporting notes only. Tables that are used to present statistical or complex data/information to support an answer are excluded from word count; however inappropriate and excessive use of tables may result in the work being returned for editing. Learners should limit the word count used within tables.

The excessive use of word count in assignments is not grounds for referral.

However CMI reserves the right to return work to the Centre for editing and resubmission by the Learner. This applies to work assessed by the Centre and Externally Assessed by CMI.

There may be instances where Learners require reasonable adjustments for assessment that includes approval of increased word count. In this instance, Learners should signpost their assessment to highlight where assessment criteria has been met.

All applications for Reasonable Adjustment must be approved in advance by Boo. For further information, please refer to the Boo HQ Reasonable Adjustments Procedure.

It is good practice for Learners to state the total word count on the front of their assessment. Learners should also endeavour, where possible, to use Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format for their assessments as this enables Learners to utilise word count tools.

Page 20: CHARTERED MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE COACHING ......CHARTERED MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE COACHING & MENTORING CANDIDATE HANDBOOK QUALIFICATIONS 4 5 WELCOME TO BOO! It is great that you have chosen

20

ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE: APPENDICES

Information and evidence that is used to demonstrate that the Learner has met the Assessment Criteria should be included within the main body of the written report. This applies to work assessed by the Centre and Externally Assessed by CMI. Appendices that are included will not be moderated or marked by CMI.

Appendices will not be marked and evidence within appendices will not be considered as evidence used to demonstrate that the learner has met the assessment criteria. Therefore Learners should aim to minimise the amount of unnecessary attachments or appendices. Appendices should only be used to provide supporting data or evidence that underpins the written answer within the main body of the report.

An example of an appendix may be where a Learner has been asked to evaluate the outcome of a 360 degree appraisal. The Learners written evaluation should be in the main body of the report and will be marked and considered as part of the word count. However the Learner may append the actual 360 degree appraisal as evidence that this has been undertaken or the appendix may contain a summary of a diagnostic tool that a Learner has used to provide the justification for an evaluation. The content of the diagnostic tool will not be marked as it is the evaluation or justification within the main body of the report that would address the assessment criteria.

Any published secondary information such as annual reports and company literature, should be referenced in the main text of the assignment but not included.

ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE: REFERENCING

A professional approach to work is expected and therefore Learners must clearly identify and acknowledge the use of all secondary sources, for example quotations, models, theories etc. from books, websites or any other source including work-based products in accordance with the Boo HQ Plagiarism and Collusion Statement.

CMI does not require Harvard Referencing but do require that Learners use an appropriate referencing system that ensures the original source(s) can be tracked. Referencing must be made directly under or next to the source within the body of the work; a bibliography cannot be relied on as having referenced a source.

ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE: PLAGIARISM AND COLLUSION

Learners should refer to the Boo HQ Plagiarism and Collusion Statement for full guidance. Plagiarism means presenting work, excerpts, ideas or passages of another author or person without appropriate referencing and attribution to the original person or author. Therefore plagiarism includes the use of ‘cut-and-paste’ and also includes the taking of another’s ideas and passing them off as ones own.

Collusion occurs when two or more Learners submit work which is so alike in ideas, content, wording and/or structure that the similarity goes beyond what might have been mere coincidence, whilst CMI recognise that Learners may work in study groups to undertake research or study required for an assignment, the actual assignment must be written by the Learner and contain the Learners individual answer to the assessment criteria.

Page 21: CHARTERED MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE COACHING ......CHARTERED MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE COACHING & MENTORING CANDIDATE HANDBOOK QUALIFICATIONS 4 5 WELCOME TO BOO! It is great that you have chosen

21

Learners who work within the same organisation must take additional care to ensure their answers submitted reference company policies, procedures etc. but also contain their individual input to the assessment criteria.

Both plagiarism and collusion are considered by CMI to be a serious matter, and will be dealt with in accordance with BOO HQ and CMI’s Malpractice and Maladministration Policy and Procedure. All Learners are required to sign a Statement of Authenticity declaring that the work submitted is their own. The written declaration can be worded as follows:

ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE: BIBLIOGRAPHY

CMI does not require Learners to include a bibliography with their assignments; however this is seen as good practice particularly for higher level qualifications. All sources/methodology/applications should be acknowledged in accordance in the BOO HQ Plagiarism and Collusion Statement. The Learner must use an appropriate referencing system to achieve this.

ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE: REFERRAL/RESUBMISSION

CMI allows Learners to submit the original and two further submissions should they receive a refer grade. If a Learner is required to resubmit an assignment they should only amend those assessment criteria that have been referred. Under no circumstances should a Learner amend the answer to an assessment criteria that has been passed as this may affect the original grade awarded.

If a Learner is resubmitting a referred assignment then the word count guidance in this policy still applies. It is acknowledged that if a Learner is asked to enhance an answer this may result in some increase in word count. CMI and Approved Centre Assessors will make a professional judgement as to whether the increase in word-count is reasonable and therefore Learners are encouraged to be concise in their response. As a guide, it is expected that an enhanced answer would not increase the word-count of the original answer for that assessment criteria by more than 50%. Where Learners enhance an answer they should use a different colour font to indicate this enhancement.

If a Learner wishes to rewrite the entire answer then the original answer should be retained within the assignment but crossed-through using either a highlighting tool or track changes.

‘’I confirm that the work within the completed assignment is all my own work, and does not include any work completed by anyone other than myself unless referenced. I have completed the assignment in accordance with CMI instructions and within the time limits set by my CMI Centre. By signing my name below I am agreeing that I have read and understood the Learner Statement of Authenticity’’

facility within word – the new answer must adhere to the word-count stated in the assignment brief and must be produced using a different colour font, BLUE for the first resubmission and RED for the second and final resubmission.

Any resubmitted work where the learner has not used a different colour font or exceeds word-count may be returned for editing.

ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE: STRUCTURING WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS

Learners are expected to produce assessments to a professional standard. Therefore written assignments should use clear headings and paragraphs. Learners need to use the CMI assessment criteria as sub-headings within their written work.

Grammar and use of English should be of a professional standard. CMI reserves the right to return any assignment where the evidence of each assessment criteria cannot be easily located and where the Assessor has been unable award a pass without making assumptions to determine the meaning or intent of the answer.

Learners are therefore advised to ensure their answers are clear, concise and CMI recommend that the assignment is proof-read to ensure clarity of meaning prior to submission for marking. Assessment Guidance: Format of submissions.

It is essential that you read the syllabus and good practice guidance found on the CMI website under your log-in. You will also need to reference your own reading.

REFERRALSThere is a limit of two resubmissions per assessment.

Where a candidate does not meet the required standard, every effort will be made to ensure that the candidate gets sufficient support to ensure that their second submission meets the criteria. Each case will be dealt with according to individual circumstances however, the procedures to be followed in a case of referral are:

Following each referral, the candidate will receive detailed feedback as to why the assessment is referred and advice as to what they need to do to meet the required standard. The candidate will have the opportunity to request a tutorial support session (in person or over the ‘phone) with the assessor. The direction of this session will be led by the candidate, based on the needs identified in the assessment feedback.

If the candidate does not meet the required standard after the second submission, and following any tutorials, a review meeting will be held between the candidate and the Programme Director to address the issue and confirm the candidate understands the implications of any further failure.

The Centre team will undertake a coaching session with the candidate to understand what opportunities are available for them.

REQUESTS FOR ASSESSMENT EXTENSIONS

It is acknowledged that there will be occasions that may warrant extensions on submission dates for assessments being granted. In these cases, the candidate must complete a ‘request for extension form’ clearly explaining the reasons for the request and submitting it electronically to [email protected] Any extension request needs to be submitted at least one week before the advertised assessment submission date.

The circumstances for the extension will be discussed between the candidate and the Programme Director. The re-scheduling of any submission dates must be agreed in writing, signed by both the candidate and the Programme Director and will usually be a further 2 weeks following the advertised submission deadline.

It is highly recommended by the Programme Team that candidates do keep on track with all submission deadlines so as not to negatively impact their progress with the remainder of the programme.

APPEALS

If any candidate wishes to appeal against a decision that has been given for a piece of work, then this must first be discussed with the assessor concerned within 3 weeks of receiving feedback. The assessment feedback sheets will detail how the original assessment decision was reached.

If a candidate is still dissatisfied with the result, then a written appeal must be made to the Programme Director within 4 weeks of previous feedback, and this will then be discussed with the assessor and the candidate within 4 weeks of receiving the written appeal.

If the appeal is not resolved to the satisfaction of all concerned, an appeals panel will be convened to hear the appeal. The panel’s membership will be made up of Human Resources and will be independent of learning and development. The decision of the Appeals Panel is final. The appeal must then adhere to the Chartered Management Institute Appeals Process.

If a candidate has any concerns about the way a unit or the whole programme is run, then they must discuss this with the Programme Director as soon as it becomes a concern.

COMPLAINTSIf any candidate has a complaint against the centre or individuals employed by the organisation then in the first instance they must state their complaint, in writing, to the Programme Director as soon as possible but no later than 6 weeks after completing the Programme. The Programme Director will deal with the complaint within 6 weeks of receiving the written statement. If the candidate is unhappy with the outcome or the Programme Director is unable to deal directly with the complaint, the complaint will be passed to the Director of Coaching.

MALPRACTICE – PLAGIARISM PROCEDUREPlagiarism occurs when students fail to acknowledge that the ideas or work of others are being used. Specifically it occurs when:

• other people’s work and/or ideas are paraphrased and presented without a reference;

• other candidate’s work is copied or partly copied;

• other people’s designs, codes or images are presented as the student’s own work;

• phrases and passages are used verbatim without quotation marks and/or without a reference to the author or a web page;

When plagiarism is suspected, the Programme Director is required to investigate the issue and CMI will be informed.

Candidates are required to complete a Learner Statement of Authenticity for all written assignments to confirm that the work is their own.

LEARNER STATEMENT OF AUTHENTICITY

This Statement of Authenticity needs to be completed for each written assignment you complete.it should be sent electronically with your assignment when you submit it.

See appendix for copy of statement of authenticity form. A copy will be emailed to you after workshop 1.

‘I confirm that the work within the completed assignment is all my own work, and does not include any work completed by anyone other than myself unless referenced. By signing my name below I am agreeing that I have read and understood the Learner Statement of Authenticity.’
