As you should all know by now, we are very pleased to have our Tier 4 status re-instated from september, just in time for the beginning of new terms at many of our schools.

This autumn, we’re also very pleased to welcome a host of new colleagues, recent partnerships, and many courses that will be running for the first time.

News | Tier 4 Status

As mentioned earlier in this newsletter, we are pleased to announce that the UK Home Office has lifted the temporary suspension of LSBF and FBT’s Tier 4 sponsor licences.

Both schools have now been reinstated on the sponsor register as a Highly Trusted Sponsor, which means that we can continue to recruit

and sponsor overseas students.

It also means that applications by students which were placed on hold have been processed and students that had returned home for the summer holidays were be able to freely travel to the United Kingdom to return to their studies.

If you have any questions, please address them to your line manager in the first instance. Any approaches from the media or requests for comment should be addressed to the PR & Communications team.

Thanks to everyone for your support!

GUS has acquired two new buildings for both staff and students in recent months.

The first is Sceptre Court in Tower Hamlets, minutes away from London’s financial district. With over 90,000 square feet of space, beautiful views over the Tower of London Park, and state-of-the-art facilities, it’s an ideal location. This

campus will also contribute to the local community by distributing 10 scholarships a year for local residents.

St Patrick’s International College have also moved into a new east London campus in Duncan House, Stratford. Students are already giving great feedback on the location and improved facilities.

Many of GUS’s staff and colleges have won or been nominated for prestigious awards this year.

LSBF and InterActive have made the shortlist for the National Business Awards 2014, nominated for the Inflexion International Growth Business of the Year Award, which recognizes the highest and most sustainable level of global expansion.

LSBF’s school in Singapore has also received multiple prizes this year, won by staff and students. This year, eighteen LSBF students made up a third of the

total ACCA prize winners in Singapore, achieving the top three places in the country. Abby Hong, an education consultant at the school, also won the ACCA staff prize for Outstanding Team Member.

At LCCA, one of their fashion students received the Black Entertainment, Film, Fashion, Television, and Arts (BEFFTA) Excellence Award for her clothes designs.

GUS has been nominated in three different categories for the Education Investor’s awards, with LFC E.L.I.T.E.S distinguishing itself with a nomination for

EducationInvestor’s New Kid award.

InterActive was also nominated for the Technological Infrastructure award, with Liverpool FC and LSBF in the running for winning Education Partnership of the Year.

One of LSBF’s ACCA lecturers, Hafeez Qazi, also won the Association of International Accountant’s Accountant of the Year award this year.

Well done to all who have won, and good luck to those nominated!

We’ve been expanding rapidly over the last few months, welcoming several brand new partners to the group.

These have included our first accredited university, University Canada West (UCW). Based in Vancouver, UCW specialises in degrees in business and communications at undergraduate and postgraduate level. This is a great step forward for GUS as a group, as UCW is our first member to have achieved university status.

Our other new additions to the group are:

• The Institute of Business and Technology College in Dublin (IBAT)

• Namibia Students’ Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF)

• Mod’Art International Paris

• The Sichuan Provincial Tourism School (SPTS)

• Alexander College, Cyprus

• Amirta International Institute of Hotel Management, India (AIIHM)

Our e-learning platform, Interactive, has recently gained three new iHub partners: Global Daigaku in Tokyo, EMOS in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and SAP in Panama City. It also partnered with the University of Wolverhampton, adding several new courses to the list of courses that students can study.

Meanwhile, the Canadian branch of The Language Gallery (TLG) in Toronto has welcomed Confederation College and Thompson Rivers University as university pathway partners. This means that after TLG Toronto students finish their courses, they can go on to take hundreds of new courses at either of these partner schools.

The group continues to grow and create new opportunities for our students and staff, so watch this space for more news!

Meet: Guy Gerlach

the new Managing Director of GUS in Brazil

GuyGerlach,

How long have you been with GUS, and what do you think so far?

I’ve been here at GUS for about a month; there’s been a huge learning curve!

I’m struck by the diversity that the company already has. It’s already a large group, though it’s relatively young. It has significant variety in forms of study and different levels of qualifications - and a very clear, very palpable appetite to grow and expand.

Page 13: Chat! Issue 1

Meet: Guy Gerlach

What are you up to in Brazil?

We’re in the process of setting up a company in Brazil, because at the moment we don’t have one. I will be the Managing Director of that company when it is set up. The legal processes will take us a couple of months. Once it’s set up, we’ll be able to do all of the exciting things that we intend to do in Brazil.

We’re at the stage where anything could happen. It’s a huge market in not only a geographical sense, but also in the sense of opportunity. There are 200 million Brazilians, 53 million of them in K12 education – so that’s nearly a quarter of the entire population. And then obviously there are all of the different kinds of education: higher and further education, vocational degree

courses, post graduate, under graduate, private schools, public schools…

Everything is going on here in Brazil, and with the variety of products and schools we have got something for just about anyone.

Once I make that first crucial acquisition, we intend to very quickly start bringing over the brands that we have in the UK and other countries, and start building a new base here.

When did you move to Brazil?

I’ve lived in Brazil for many many years. I first came here in 1980, when I graduated, and I’ve lived in Brazil all of my adult life. I came back to the UK for five years from ‘88 to ’93, and I also spent four years with my wife (who is Brazilian) in Argentina

for four years, from ’98 to 2002. But apart from that, I’ve spent all my adult life in Brazil.

I had some typical culture shock when I first arrived, but over the years I’ve become very at home in Brazil and although there are things that still strike me as being different, I’m used to them and I take it in my stride.

What do you do for fun?

I’m not a great alternative pastime person to be honest! I wish I could say that I’m a great sportsman, but I’m not. I do walk around a lot at the moment, so I’m getting a lot of exercise.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned?

Listen! It may sound flippant, but I’m being very very serious: listening has been

the most important skill I’ve developed in my professional life. It started when I was a teacher and I had to really listen to my students to help them. What I’ve learned is that professionally being successful at selling is about listening as well.

What are you proud of?

I’m proud of my family: I have two sons and a wife. We’re a bi-cultural family, in that all of us are as at home in the UK as we are here in Brazil.

We’re bilingual as well, which I think is a fantastic gift; I think anyone who is fluent in two languages is enjoying a fantastic asset.

I’m very proud of my work in education, and that’s why I’m excited to be able to bring the company to Brazil.

If you’re spending hours commuting to and from work, and your job involves mostly sitting still and concentrating for 8 hours, it can be difficult to take care of yourself. Here are this issue’s top tips to keep you feeling your best!

If you want to fit more exercise into your day, one of the easiest ways to do it is to work some extra walking into your daily routine; or you can try some simple stretches to keep your blood flowing!

Here are five simple tips to get yourself moving a bit more:

1. Use the stairs at work, instead of the lift; start out just going downstairs and then progress to walking upstairs

2. Park further away, or get off a stop early on the train or bus

3. Leg extensions: Grab the seat of your chair to brace yourself and extend your legs

straight out in front of you so they are parallel to the floor, then flex and point your toes five times.

4. Wrist strengthening: This one is especially good if you type a lot! Get a tennis ball and squeeze it as hard as you can without hurting yourself. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 10 times.

Last year, almost half of the people in Britain considered themselves stressed; if you’re one of them, here are three ways you can start reducing your stress levels now.

1. Deep breathing techniques: When you feel stress building up, take a five minute break to regulate your breathing. Sit up straight, eyes closed, with a hand on your belly. Slowly inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. This slows the heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and calms you down.

2. Leave the stressful situation: Whether it’s the billionth email in a confusing back and forth or a colleague pressuring you to deliver, a good way to calm yourself down is to just remove yourself from the situation and clear your head. Go for a walk and take some time.

3. Sleep! Make sure you get your 8 hours every night if you can to recharge your batteries and let your brain rest. When we’re tired, we are more easily irritated – and more stressed.

5. Calf raises: These are easy to do if you’re waiting for the printer. Stand with your feet a shoulder-width apart, press up onto your toes, pause, then lower back down. Repeat until your printing, faxing, or scanning is done. When you’ve got the hang of that, try one leg at a time.
