What kind of wood is that?

Oh my goodness, identifying wood type is a trick for me. The woods I regularly turn are Bradford pear, white and red oak, cherry and poplar. I can generally tell by sight which one it is. If not sight then by how easily it turns. Some-times smell is a dead give away. If I can see the bark it’s better and if I can see the leaves then even better. I haven’t bought much wood already identi-fied, I usually use what’s readily available. So that could be FOG wood (found on ground). Sometimes people bring me wood that they say is one thing but then I discover they didn’t know. At any rate, like so much of woodturning it takes experience. Another learning curve.

Once I mount a piece of wood on the lathe and start cutting I can quickly tell wet wood from dry. Although I cheat with a moisture meter. I know that if I’m gonna purposely harvest a tree that I want to do it at this time of year or before the sap rises. Sometimes you take advantage of a storm in summer and get the really wet stuff. Some turning techniques call for turning and finishing a wet piece of wood. Some, the drier the better. I’ve spent some time lately watching/reading resources on tree identification. I started with the AAW website and I’m branching out from there.

No matter how you acquire and then identify wood at least you have it to turn! If you have tried and true resources on this subject share with us the next business club.

Happy turning,Carolyn Adams

March is the MONTH for DUES! The CWT Leadership has set a goal to have all Dues paid by the March Club Meeting!

Individual member - $35.00 Family Membership - $40.00

If you are uncertain about your 2021 Dues status, please contact Loren Smith, CWT Treasurer to be sure you are an ACTIVE member of CWT. After the March meeting, all members who have not paid their dues will be dropped from the Membership Roll.

Translation: You will not receive any emails concerning the monthly newsletter

or announcements about future club events.

You don’t want to be left behind!

Our current membership is 55 members! Your Leadership Team is pleased with the current enrollment but our goal is 75… our membership during 2020. Please consider joining if you have not already. The Virtual Demos and Chapter Meetings don’t pay for themselves and Membership Dues are the sole revenue stream for CWT currently. The CWT Leadership Team is constantly aware of being good stewards of your resources and work tirelessly to provide excellent programs and opportunities to hone your turning skills!

Thank you for your support of CWT. We are all looking forward to the day when we can return to in person meetings!

Make some chips fly!Alan

Februsary Demo Recap: Bronze BowlDEMONSTRATOR: PAT CARROL

During the demo, Nick turned a Bronze Bowl. He covered basic bowl design, different types of cuts and proper tool technique. Then, he showed us how to take an ordinary wooden bowl and transform it into an antique bronze vessel. Lots of good tips for both the basic turner as well as the more advanced turner who wants to learn more about surface enhancements. For more about Nick and his work, please refer to his website: https://nickagarstudios.com/
