Wall Art

Blue and Brown Circles Wall Art

By: STYROFOAM Brand Foam

Create yourself some fabulous wall art to display throughout your home. Using scrapbook paper, acrylics and ribbon you can make your own DIY home decor. Find this project and many more low-cost decorating ideas in the great decor in a flash without a lot of cash eBook from Dow.

Materials:

STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam: o Sheets, two 36" x 12" x 1" (one

sheet yields 3 squares); or four 12" x 12" x 1" squares

Decorative ribbon, such as grosgrain or velvet, 1" x 1-1/2 yds. per square

Scrapbook paper: 12" x 12", two blue, two cream

Circles sheer sheet, four** Acrylic craft paint, brown Paintbrush Carpenter's level Low-temp glue gun and glue sticks Serrated knife Candle stub or paraffin Pencil Ruler Dental floss (optional)

Scissors Putty knife, 1" Liquid paper glue or stick-flat paste Sawtooth hangers and nails, four, or

poster putty

**Circles sheer sheet found on Mayaroad.com

Steps:

1. Paint Circles sheer sheet brown; let dry.

2. If using 12" x 12" x 1" squares, skip to Step 3. Wax serrated knife with candle stub or paraffin. Measure and cut each foam sheet into three 12" squares. Or, use dental floss: stand the sheet on its edge, and hold a 20" length of dental floss along the scored line, positioning one hand at the bottom of the board and the other at the top; draw the dental floss down through the foam sheet along the scored line.

3. Use putty knife to spread thin, even coat of glue on foam square. Center one sheet of paper on pasted foam; smooth paper with fingers. Repeat to cover all foam squares. Let dry. (Hint: Papers might appear wavy at first, and will smooth out as the glue dries.)

4. Using glue gun, glue Circles sheer sheet onto paper-covered squares; let dry.

5. Beginning and ending at one lower corner, use glue gun to secure ribbon around edges of each foam square; trim excess, allowing a bit of overlap.

6. Use level and poster adhesive to secure squares to wall as shown. Or, glue sawtooth picture hanger to back. For additional hold, insert and glue two straight pins through holes in sawtooth picture hanger.

Mosaic Wall

By: Alexa Westerfield

Make a mosaic wall with this craft using scrapbook paper from Alexa Westerfield. Just arrange the colored squares in a grid for instant color.

Materials:

Multicolored scrapbook page packs (I purchased mine at Target and 50 sheets came to a pack; I purchased 2 packs)

Zot adhesive glue dots Tape measure

Instructions:

1. I measured out the length of my wall, then I figured out how many square 12x12 pieces of paper would fit into that length.

2. I picked out 9 different colors from a multi-color pack that I liked and placed them in a random fashion. Starting at the top, I horizontally placed the paper (to adhere to wall I put Zot dots in the four corners of the paper and pressed).

3. I then began on the next row. My goal was to not repeat two colors in a row vertically or horizontally. It was a

challenge, but not that hard once I started doing the mosaic. I tried to not get too many colors together or have similar colors sitting next to each other. I wanted it to look like a mosaic of color that looked random in placement and aesthetically pleasing overall.

Free Patterned Wall Art

By: Styrofoam Brand Foam

The patterns and designs involved in this bistro piece of wall art are exquisite. Scrapbook and ribbon make it come to life. It's an easy piece to put together and makes a beautiful decorative piece.

Materials:

STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam: o Sheets: three 12" x 36" x 1", or

nine 12" x 12" x 1" squares Ribbon, 1" x 12-1/3 yds. Scrapbook paper: 12" x 12", nine sheets

(heavier weight) Sawtooth picture hangers, nine, or

poster putty Thick, white craft glue Putty knife Straight pins (optional) Optional: If using 12" x 36" x 1" foam

sheets, additional supplies include ruler, pencil, serrated knife, old candle, dental floss

Steps:

1. If using 12" x 12" x 1" squares, skip to Step #2. Using ruler and pencil, score foam sheet to create three, 12" x 12" squares. Wax serrated knife with an old

candle. Holding foam sheet firmly on a flat surface, extend one end and cut across the score line, using knife like a saw. Or, try dental floss: Stand the sheet on its edge and hold a 20" length of dental floss along the scored line, positioning one hand at the bottom of the board and the other at the top; draw the dental floss down through the foam sheet along the scored line. Repeat for remaining two foam sheets, creating a total of nine, 12" x 12" squares.

2. Use putty knife to spread craft glue on foam sheet. Adhere paper to foam sheet, smoothing with fingers. Repeat to cover all foam squares. If necessary, pin corners in place until glue dries. (Hint: Papers might appear wavy at first, and will smooth out as the glue dries.)

3. Cut ribbon into nine equal lengths. Beginning and ending at one lower corner, use glue gun to secure ribbon around edges of each foam square; trim excess, allowing a bit of overlap. (Hint: STYROFOAM™ brand foam is very forgiving. If the paper square does not exactly meet the edges of the foam sheet, run the edge of the foam square along a tabletop, compressing the foam.)

4. Use level and poster adhesive to secure squares to wall as shown. Or, glue sawtooth picture hanger to back on each square. For additional hold, insert and glue two straight pins through holes in sawtooth picture hanger.

5. Let dry before hanging.

Decoupage

Decoupage Bud Vase

By: Amy Anderson of Mod Podge Rocks!

Turn an inexpensive bud vase into a beautiful home accent with this decoupage craft project from Amy Anderson. Use your favorite scrapbook paper, ribbon and embellishments to create this colorful bud vase.

Before

Materials:

Small round glass vase, $1 Scrapbook paper – 1 sheet, on hand Orange ribbon, 12 inches, on hand Gloss Mod Podge, on hand Paper flowers, on hand Buttons – five coordinating, on hand Craft glue, on hand Paint brush, on hand Pencil or pen, on hand Craft knife and mat, on hand Ruler, on hand

Instructions:

Before you work with glass for decoupage, you should always wash it thoroughly to remove hand smudges and oil. Dry completely.

The first thing you are going to do is trim the paper. Yes – you are jumping right in! My vase is about 8 inches, and I wanted to have a border on the top and bottom. So I trimmed a 7 inch strip of scrapbook paper. It’s really easy. Just measure 7 inches on the top and on the bottom, and then use your craft knife to cut it.

Now you have a strip of scrapbook paper that fits the vase vertically, but the paper is too long horizontally. You only need about 1/4″ to 1/2″ of overlap where the paper meets. What I did is roll the vase in the paper and mark where I was going to cut it.

Then I went ahead and cut it. Note my pointy thumb to stabilize the craft knife. This is not required.

This is where the party finally gets started! Grab your Mod Podge and start smearing with the paint brush. You are going to put down a medium-thin layer, and don’t be afraid to get the corners well. You want the paper to adhere.

Page 10: Cheap Home Décor: Crafting with Paper - FaveCrafts

Now that your paper is covered in Mod Podge, the easiest way to get the paper onto the vase is to set it down on there and roll it. If you need to add more Mod Podge as you roll in areas that you missed, that would be okay. Roll carefully at the end so the paper meets just right, and make sure you are rolling tightly to avoid wrinkles. Once the paper is on, start smoothing with your fingers. If Mod Podge comes out the top or bottom, it’s okay. Just wipe it away with your fingers or a paint brush. Wipe it on your husband or children. Kidding! Allow to dry for 15 – 20 minutes.

Coat the entire outside of the paper with Mod Podge. Just go up to the edge of the paper, and maybe a little over onto the

glass – we are going to cover with ribbon anyway. Let dry for 15 – 20 minutes and do another coat. Let dry.

Time to accent with ribbon. Grab the ribbon and wrap around the top of the vase. Make sure that you have a 1/4″ to 1/2″ extra like you did with the paper. Cut the ribbon. Cut another piece of the same length for the bottom.

Glue on the ribbon. Place a thin bead of craft glue around the top, then press the ribbon down. Seam the ribbon where you did the paper. Smooth with your fingers and wipe away any excess glue. Repeat for the bottom.

You are at the finish. Grab the flowers and start gluing them down. I layered the flowers and worked my way around the vase. I have five layered flowers because my vase is small. You’ll want to use more for a bigger vase. When I was done gluing the flowers down, I glued buttons in the middle. Did I mention that I’m obsessed with buttons?

That’s it – you’re done. I’m so proud of you. You now have a bright and cheery room decoration. Allow it to dry for 24 hours before using. Stick your flowers in it and go!

Decoupage Dresser

By: Annie Sloan

There are découpage motif books, but you could also find a good image in a magazine or online. The picture can then be adjusted, scanned, and printed using a computer. The paper design is then cut out and stuck down onto a surface and varnished several times. I have chosen a design of people running to go along each drawer.

Project from Annie Sloan's Paint Transformations.

Materials:

Design from a print book or other source

Computer, scanner, and printer Scissors Water-based matt découpage medium 1in (2.5cm) paintbrush for applying

medium Barcelona Orange paint Monet Blue paint Olive Green paint Water Small artists’ brush

Tin of clear wax 1in (2.5cm) paintbrush for applying wax

Before

While in Venice some years ago I was inspired by the most charming 18th-century découpage cabinet with sepia prints on it, colored gently and haphazardly with watercolor. This chest of drawers was the perfect piece to emulate the effect I saw that day in the Doge’s Palace.

Instructions:

1. I have chosen a design of a hilarious medieval chase with skirts flying and arms waving that I saw in a book of découpage prints. After measuring the height of the drawers I scanned and enlarged the design to the required size.  The initial printout was a little dark for my taste so I changed the color to a brownish black and printed it out again. I also reversed the design on the computer so that the people will be running the opposite way on the middle drawer. If you struggle with computers, take your chosen design to a local copy shop; they will be able to help you scan and print it out.

Page 13: Cheap Home Décor: Crafting with Paper - FaveCrafts

2. Cut out the figures with a sharp pair of scissors, getting as close to the edge of the design as possible. It’s best if you cut everything out before you start gluing so you can plan roughly where you are going to position each figure. Next, paint the whole area of one drawer front with the découpage medium.

3. With the découpage medium still wet, place a cut-out figure at one end of the drawer. At the same time brush over the design with the medium, which will now act as a varnish. Try to avoid the paper bubbling up by brushing from one end to the other. If a bubble does come up try to press it down and out the side, but do this quickly before the

varnish begins to dry. Repeat the process until the whole drawer front is filled with images. Varnish the drawer twice more, allowing each layer to dry thoroughly.

4. For the painting of the pictures choose one main color and two or three others to partner it. I selected watered down Barcelona Orange as my main color with some Monet Blue and Olive Green—one hot and two cool colors. I applied the colors to the “clothes,” sometimes deliberately missing the area a little so it looks more like a painting. Use the paint like watercolor and make the color uneven in parts. If you make a mistake take the paint off with water.

Page 14: Cheap Home Décor: Crafting with Paper - FaveCrafts

5. When you’ve finished coloring, complete the drawers with two layers of varnish. Either wax the whole piece, including the drawer fronts, with a brush or continue with varnish—I prefer wax.

6. I painted my main color Barcelona Orange inside the drawers, which is in deliberate and strong contrast to the coolness of the outside decoration.

Tip: Try to avoid having a single small image in the middle of a drawer as it can look a little corny. If you have one good image perhaps try using it enlarged so it fills up the area.

Paper Star Fourth of July Centerpieces

By: Rachel Theall for Paper Trunk

Make your own pretty and patriotic fourth of July centerpieces featuring perfect paper stars. Follow this step-by-step Paper Trunk tutorial to create your own 2-sided fourth of July centerpieces.

Materials:

2 Sheets of red and white striped 12x12 scrapbook paper "Wild Love"

from Paper Trunk Maybe Baby line

1 Sheet of 12x12 designer Kraft paper from the Paper Trunk Krafty Collection

3 Journal spots from the Paper Trunk Krafty Collection

1 set of white "Benny" alphabet stickers from Paper Trunk

12 inch long strips of paper from the Paper Trunk Rockabilly Collection Small scallop border Fiskars punch

6 petal flower punch Tattered Angels Glimmer mists, blue

and red Colorbox blue pigment ink Black Soot Distress Ink by Ranger Recycled craft sticks from rub-on

packages Wide ribbon Hot glue gun Scrapbooking adhesive Recycled cappuccino can Red, white, and blue plastic bags

Instructions:

1. Follow the instructions here for making a 5 point star using a 12x12 inch piece of paper and one cut. Use the star pattern to cut a star from the red and white striped paper and the sheet of kraft paper.

2. Fold the red and white striped stars in half at each of the points. From the center point of the star, each arm of the star will be folded so that the fold is up. The part of each fold that does not go out to the arm of the star is folded so that the crease goes down. When finished, the stars will look like barn stars. With the star folded flat cut about 1 inch off the peak in the center part of the star so that you have a star shaped hole in the middle of the star when it is unfolded.

3. One of the red and white striped stars will go on each side of the Kraft paper.

Page 19: Cheap Home Décor: Crafting with Paper - FaveCrafts

Glue the tip of each star arm to the tip of the Kraft paper star arms using a hot glue gun or quick drying adhesive.

4. Cut two journal spots from the Kraft paper for your fourth of July centerpieces.

5. Punch a scalloped border from the Paper Trunk Rockabilly paper.

6. Cut 3/4 of the way through the paper from the straight edge toward the top of each of the scallops. Over lap each of the cuts so that a circular shape can be made out of the strip of paper. Glue the scalloped strip to the back of the circular journal spot. Ink the edges of the scalloped border with blue ink. Make two paper roses using the flower punch (there are quite a few tutorials on this on the Internet).

7. Spray blue Glimmer Mist on the roses.

8. Glue one rose to the center of each journal spot 9. Add Happy 4th of July around the edge of the circular journal spot.

9. To make the "th" on 4th trim down the "t" and "h" letters. Add July 4th around the rose on the second journal spot, also trimming the "t" and "h".

10. Using a hot glue gun, adhere the journal spots over the star-shaped holes in the center of the red and white striped stars

11. Add hot glue to the top of a Popsicle stick and glue it to the Kraft star by sticking it underneath the red and white striped star. Do this on both sides of the Kraft star.

12. Glue two additional sticks to the bottom of the first sticks so that the support for the star is three sticks long.

13. Tie two bows from the wide ribbon and glue them to each side of the Popsicle sticks.

14. Cut a strip of Rockabilly paper wide enough to cover an empty cappuccino can. On the black and white side of the paper, spray red Glimmer Mist along one of the long edges and blue glimmer mist along the other long edge.

15. Glue the red, white, and blue strip of Rockabilly paper to the can. It may not go all the way around.

16. Cut a third journal spot from the Krafty Collection paper.

17. Cut out a star shape from a piece of scrap paper to create a mask. You do not need the star shape, you need the star-shaped hole in the piece of paper. Place the mask on the journal spot and spray red Glimmer Mist on the bottom of the star and blue Glimmer Mist on the top of the star.

18. Spell out the word "celebrate" in Benny Alphabet stickers.

19. Glue the journal spot to the can to cover the gap between the ends of the paper or the seam where the ends

Colorful Tissue Wreaths

By: Kathleen George for STYROFOAM Brand Foam

This colorful tissue wreath can be used year-round, but would look great around the holiday season. Tissue paper and ribbon are what brings this whole craft together into one lovely piece. Kathleen George shows us how to make it in six easy steps.

Materials:

STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam: o Wreaths: 9" x 1-1/4" x 3/4";

two 6" x 1-1/4" x 5/8" Coordinating grosgrain ribbon, 1" x 1/2

yd. Brightly colored tissue paper, several

large sheets in assorted colors Scissors Pencil Ruler Optional: Rotary cutter, cutting mat and

metal ruler Optional: Straight pins Thick, white craft glue

Steps:

Note: You will need a total of eighty 4" x 6" pieces of tissue paper to cover all three

foam wreaths. To save time, stack several layers of tissue paper and use rotary cutter to cut multiple 4"-wide strips. Combine strips into stacks and cut multiple 6" lengths at a time.

1. Set aside 40 tissue pieces for 9" foam wreath and 20 pieces for each 6" wreath.

2. Fold each tissue piece in half lengthwise to measure 2" x 6". Cut 1-1/2"-long fringe along folded edge, every 1/4". Leave strips folded.

3. Wrap and glue top edge of first fringed strip, opposite fold, around one side of wreath. Glue and pin ends at back to secure, leaving fringe loose.

4. Wrap and glue second fringed strip around wreath, 1/2" below first and under fringe; pin ends if desired. Wrap and glue remaining tissue strips around wreath in same way until surface is completely covered. Repeat to cover all three wreaths.

5. Use scissors to make small holes in center top and bottom of 9" wreath (A) and one 6" wreath (B); make small hole in center top of remaining 6" wreath (C). Using photo as guide, position wreaths on work surface with B in the center.

6. Cut one 8" and two 4" ribbon lengths. Glue ends of 4" lengths into holes in wreaths, joining A and B and B and C together. Glue ends of 8" length into hole at top of A for hanger; pin to secure.
