Sticky fingers, hair
smelling of dirt and sun, rosy-
cheeked smiles, and a gaggle
of friends are among the best
of childhood. Come live up those moments
of childhood May 19 at this
year‟s Spring Fling. As Cheatham says goodbye to
many of our friends, the
Spring Fling Committee be-
came dedicated to making an
event for the creation of last-
ing memories. This year, Spring Fling will be
out in the grass and sun, with
children enjoying unlimited
access to all Spring Fling ac-
tivities. No more tickets to buy
and walls to bind, but good
friends and good fun for the
end of an era. Bounce houses, photo booths,
music, Gagaball and pie-
throwing are all among the
Spring Fling activities that
will remain in your student‟s
mind for years to come. Food trucks will also be onsite
for those wishing to purchase
food. So don‟t miss out on the
memories in this last hurrah of
Cheatham comradery — May
19 from 6 to 8 p.m. More in-
formation and order forms can
be found on pages 8 and 9 of
the Chatter.

Saying goodbye is hard.
And for children at Cheatham Elemen-
tary, saying goodbye may be even
harder as many of them will transfer to
Preston Elementary in the Fall. While Cheatham teachers are already
talking with students and easing their
anxiety about who is going and who is
staying, you can help your children with
a smooth end of year transition too. Here are some tips from Parenting
Magazine:
1. As a parent, recognize the loss.
Acknowledge their sadness, fear
of making new friends and un-
certainty in losing a friendship
and understand they may not
know how to express their feel-
ings. Encourage your child to
speak to you and ask questions.
2. This is an important stage for the
kids to learn a life lesson — that
life changes and we have to
adapt to that change.
3. Busy children find less time to
worry or feel lonely. While you
don‟t want to overload your child
with activity after activity, start
them on a new hobby or interest,
particularly if it‟s in a class with
other children of their age.
4. Encourage your child to broaden
their friendships. Often kids stick
with a best friend because it‟s the
easiest thing to do. Ask your
child if there‟s someone else they
might like to play with — organ-
ize a play date or invite a small
group of kids over. Often, these
interactions can spawn new
friendships that just need time to
grow.
5. Don‟t downplay the situation
with comments like, “don‟t
worry, you‟ll find a new friend”.
They will, but it doesn‟t mean
the loss of time with the old
friend isn‟t important.
6. Above all, recognize that chil-
dren are resilient, often more
than we are as adults! They will
bounce back and with your sup-
port it will be an easier process. Cheatham students also have some fan-
tastic ideas about how to keep in touch
with friends who will be attending Pre-
ston in the Fall. Read them below in the
„On the Blacktop‟ section of the Chatter.
Since October, Peachjar, Allen ISD‟s electronic flyer distribution system, has saved 1,606,124 sheets of paper —
approximately 193 trees.

Flight of the Butterfly Local Girl Scout troop plants butterfly garden at Cheatham playground
By Abby
5th-Grade Student
Making the butterfly
garden was a fun and
educational experience. We learned that it was
important to include two
different types of plants in order to take
care of the Monarch butterfly.
While we hope
lots of butterflies
will come, the
Monarch was
our main focus
because they
travel through
North Texas on
their way to Mexico. The two kinds of
plants allow the larvae to feed and the
traveling butterflies to get their nectar. It
takes four generations of Monarchs to
reach Mexico. Our troop really wanted to help the but-
terflies as they are endangered. Also, the
garden makes Cheatham more beautiful
and students can observe the butterfly
life cycle. This was an important and fulfilling pro-
ject. We hope it is enjoyed for a long
time.

Show Me the Money PTA Treasurer Kris Taylor quietly and fastidiously balances it all
By Rachel Maygren
VP Hospitality
Without ever seeking
the spotlight, Kris Tay-
lor fulfills one of the most essen-
tial roles in the Cheatham PTA.
As treasurer for the past two
years, Taylor has been responsi-
ble for all the funds coming in
and out of Cheatham. She han-
dles the taxes and makes sure
the PTA stays on budget.
"Because of how organized and
proactive she is, the PTA
budget have been managed in a
way that allowed the Member-
ship to make big investments for
Cheatham including the pur-
chase of the Gaga Ball Pit and
multi-
ple
pieces
of
play-
ground
equip-
ment," said
PTA
Presi-
dent Tasha Young.
Taylor said she volunteers be-
cause she wants involvement in
her children's school.
"Being treasurer and on the PTA
board gives me a front-row seat
to what is happening at the
school. I never realized how
much a PTA and volunteers do
for a school and it is a
rewarding experience
to be involved," Tay-
lor said. PTAs can't function
without dedicated vol-
unteers and Taylor is
one of those, Young
said. "Working with Kris
and getting to know her for 2
years has been such a pleasure.
She is kind, inclusive, and a has
a wonderful work ethic. She has
made a tremendous and long-
lasting impact at Cheatham," she
said.
Taylor and her husband, Brad,
have been married for 17 years.
