CHECKIT OUT!

Parking garage magicby Betty McCauley

Vincent Bottaro, a 14 year-old Eagle Scout, has imagined our dreary library-parking garage into a colorful vision of literary expression .

Vincent’s idea is to paint all the dull gray pillars in the garage in bright and exciting colors . On the sides of each pillar, Katy Krupp, of Element Graphics, has worked with Vincent to adhere vinyl stickers on the posts to resemble book spines with the names and authors of favorite books nominated by our community . Scouts are also required to be hands-on in the actual construction and Vincent is looking forward to the process .

Vincent is a freshman at Crescent Valley High school . He has always lived with his parents and younger sister in Corvallis . A tall, dark haired boy, proud in his Scout uniform, came to my home for an interview . He told me about his family with all four grandparents, plus aunts and uncles . They are a close family . Obviously, Vincent is a great library user; he prefers fiction, he says, and is into Stephen King books right now . In this first year of high school, he isn’t sure what his goals are yet, but he’s been auditioning for plays . He is pleased with the Eagle Scout project, which he says is important for learning dedication and leadership .

When you read Check-it-Out this month, all Vincent’s work will have begun . Before the project could happen, he had to present his idea for the approval of the Library Director, Ashlee Chavez, and Robert Fenner, the Buildings and Grounds Supervisor . Vincent made presentations to the Library Advisory Board, the Public Arts Selection Committee, the Arts and Culture Advisory Board, and the City Council . He admitted having some nervous feelings before meeting all these important people, but when there was an enthusiastic and unanimous approval from all of them he was happy . Finally, he made a detailed list of many of the supplies he needs, with their prices, and presented it to the Library Foundation for potential project funding . Our board was just as enthusiastic about his project and we approved the request .

As our autumn turns into blustery winter I think we’ll thank Vincent, who is making it possible for us to leave stormy days behind us for bright glowing colors in the parking garage, and where friends’ favorite titles entice us to carry books home to read .

NOV 4thLIBRARY CLOSURES FOR NOVEMBER & DECEMBER

Friends of the Library Corner - Katherine Inman

As the new president of the Friends of the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, I invite you to learn about our organization and join us . The Friends of the Library (FOL) organization supports the library by funding 99 .9% of all activities that the library sponsors . That includes all children’s programs, summer reading, Random Reviews, craft activities, book clubs, after hours at the library fun nights, concerts and other events for both adults and children . We don’t usually purchase books, pay utilities, or employee salaries, but if it is a weekly, monthly or yearly activity we pay for it .

We pay for these activities by selling memberships and books . Anyone can join the Friends for $10 individual and $20 for a family at any time of year . We sell books donated by community members at our yearly Big Book Sales, Holiday Sales, and Fall Festival Book Sales . Our Big Book Sale is in February at the Benton County Fairgrounds . Our Fall Festival sale was recently completed with nearly $4000 made for library activities . Our Holiday Sale is right around the corner on Nov . 30, Dec . 1 & 2 . This sale will be in the Main Meeting Room of the Corvallis Library at 645 NW Monroe, Corvallis . Hours are Friday, Nov . 30 from 3:30pm-5:30pm for members only . Saturday Dec . 1 from 10:00am-4:00pm and Sunday Dec . 2 from 11:00am-3:00pm . We will sell good quality books suitable for holiday giving at this sale, and the books, DVDs and CDs will be individually priced . Sunday books will be half price and there will be a box/bag sale for the last 2 hours of the sale on Sunday .

We also encourage you to purchase our merchandise that we have for sale . Our “I love our library” black t-shirts are still available in a variety of sizes for both adults and children for $15 and would make great holiday gifts . We also have “Born to Read” nylon backpacks for $5 . Filled with kids’ books from our Holiday sale, these backpacks would make great gifts, too . We also have a limited number of zippered book bags for $15 that are white with red straps and red bottoms . Finally, we have book bags for $1 available . Ask at the circulation desks for any of our merchandise .

We are always looking for people to help at our sales and to help with individual projects . We especially need people with graphic art skills and people who will contact businesses to share opportunities in how to support the library . If you would like to help us in any way, please contact us at friends .thebestlibrary@gmail .com You can also find information on the FOL website: https://friendsofthecbclibrary .org/ Finally, there are membership envelopes and all kinds of information at our FOL board and cabinets near the entrance to the $ .50 book room at the Corvallis Library .

We hope you will “check us out” soon!

Volunteers Strengthen Our Community- Volunteer Spotlight by Adrian Tepperman We have many new amazing volunteers who joined us the last couple of months .

Shuai Wang is excited to get started with her volunteer positions with Read to Dogs and Makers kits . She is here all the way from China, and will be with us for the next year before she returns to China . So hopefully you have many opportunities to get to know her . She has previously volunteered at her university library in China and is very happy for the opportunity to volunteer at the Corvallis Library . She also hopes that she will get to share some of her culture with those she meets .

We also welcome Emilie Ratcliff who is very passionate about learning more about how libraries work, particularly about collections and archives . She is very excited to join our team and explore the realm of librarianship and become a more involved member of her community .

I want to express my gratitude to the volunteers for dedicating their time so that our library and community thrives . This week I met with a volunteer who said, when he was a young parent, his children ran around and left messes that someone else had to clean up . For him volunteering is a way for him to give back to the community and the library . When we give back then we are continuing the cycle of generosity and kindness, which makes our community a great place to live .

Often, when I meet someone in Corvallis and I tell them that I work at the Library, they tell me “I love the library” or “I was just there today to get some books”, or “I attended a great talk last week” . The library means so much for this community and offers a unique forum for all walks of life to come together and meet . The volunteers who care about this community and give of their time, help make Corvallis such a special place to live . When you go the extra mile to help the library or any other non-profit in the community you are building a better community for everyone .
