JUNE 2020
COVID-19
edition of the Lexington
Senior Center
This is not a bad movie. We are not dreaming. And this not a hoax of any kind. COVID-19 is as real as any war we have ever fought. The impact of the coronavirus across the world is incomprehensible but we will continue to fight and remain calm and listen to the health professionals, including those at the national, state and local levels for guidance. These agencies and local leaders must continue to be transparent with the facts. Fact: Until a vaccine is discovered, our world will have to change and
we’ll have to make some major adjustments and modify the way we operate. Fact: SAFETY is and will remain our focus. Fact: We will not have all the answers, but as soon as we know it, you
too will know it. Fact: We are exploring all virtual possibilities to communicate and sign -
up for future classes via the computer, cell phone, landlines and various other social media avenues.
Fact: The senior center will look different and function differently when we resume our activities.
Fact: Social Isolation, and the way it affects us, is real and we are committed to getting you through this together.
Fact: You Must Keep Moving ~ Sean

FROM YOUR RECREATION STAFF
Hello all! We hope everyone is staying healthy at home! As soon as we receive word on when the center is going to open back up, we will let you know. In the meantime, we are hard at work developing best practices and procedures to keep you safe when we are all able to get back together. There will be specific guidelines we must follow from the CDC, as well as recommendations from our governor and mayor. We know we can count on you to support the implementation of these guidelines. Due to the ever changing situation with COVID-19, all travel has been cancelled and, at this point and will not be rescheduled. We are also placing registration for Art-Music-etc. on hold until further notice. Staff is working at the center Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Please reach out to us if we can assist you in any way. We are here to lend a hand, an ear or perhaps even provide a joke! A Message from Martha McFarland
I am currently at the Bell House on Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. I am anxious to hear from you and see how you are doing. It is a strange time in our lives but when our paths cross again, we will certainly have some stories to tell. I will be so glad to see you again even if it is from 6 feet apart. I think of you often and remember our great times together. I hope we will be able to start making some new memories soon. The other satellite centers, the Charles Young Center and the Elder Crafters at Black and Williams, are closed also. I think of the many seniors who frequent both locations and hope we will be able to welcome each other back like the old friends we are.
I ran across these two quotes that I believe should be our new inspiration.
Take life day by day and be grateful for the little things. Don’t get caught up in what you can’t control.
~ We don’t grow when things are easy. We grow when we face challenges!
As I sit in my office and write this note to you, I want you to know that the Bell House is not the same without you. I am generally here by myself, trying to decide how to make things work for you when you can return. The Bell House is still the same, but there are only three people here to keep me company – ME, MYSELF and I. These three people are not as fun to be around as you are.
If you need to chat, give me a call at 233-0986 or send me an email at [email protected].

Managing anxiety The COVID-19 pandemic is a recipe for unchecked anxiety and feelings of isolation. Here are a few pointers that could help you keep your negative thoughts in check. 1. Reframe “I am stuck inside” to “I can finally focus on my home and myself.” Try looking at this as an opportunity to refocus your attention onto yourself. Doing one productive thing per day can lead to a more positive attitude. 2. Stay close to your normal routine. Try to maintain some semblance of structure. Wake up and go to bed around the same time, eat meals, shower, adapt your exercise regimen and get out of your pajamas. This will help keep you active. 3. A chaotic home can lead to a chaotic mind. With all the uncertainty happening outside your home, keep the inside organized, predictable and clean. A cluttered home can cause you to feel uneasy and claustrophobic, so keep it tidy if you can. 4. Start a new quarantine ritual. With this newfound time, why not do something special during these days? For example, start a daily journal, take a walk, connect with a loved on by phone every evening or start a puzzle that you can work on every morning. Having something special during this time will help you look forward to each new day.
