Camping is an enjoyable activity, and there are many ways to make sure that your camping trip remains safe. Follow these simple tips to make sure everyone has a fun-filled time instead of an anxious ER visit. • Choose the right shelter and site. Consider your age, physical limitations, and medical needs, as well as everyone else’s in the group. Different amenities are available in a tent versus an RV, so plan accordingly as to what gear you will need based on your site choice. • Stay up to date on the weather. Keep an eye on the forecast before your trip. Weather can change quickly, so it’s crucial to pack a variety of weather gear to deal with different elements you may be expecting, such as rain, snow, high or low temps, and humidity. • Pack and store food safely. Leaving food out and unsecured can increase your chances of running into wildlife. To prevent unwanted confrontations, keep your food in tight, waterproof containers and store them in an insulated cooler. Be sure to wash your hands and separate raw food from the cooked meals. • Practice campfire safety. Fires should be at least 15 feet from tent walls, shrubs and trees. Your fire should always be in a small, contained, and designated area- like a fire pit. Never leave your fire unattended and put the fire out before going to bed. • Stay hydrated. This doesn’t just mean drinking when you are thirsty. It means drinking water regularly throughout the day, even before you start to feel thirsty. • Protect your skin from the sun. Whether a sunny or cloudy day, sunburn is still a possibility. Midday hours are when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Seeking shade, wearing a hat, or putting on sunglasses can help protect you from the rays. Wear a broadspectrum sunscreen and lip screen with at least SPF-15. Sources: KOA.com

WORK SAFE, LIVE SAFE

GOING GREEN

School supplies are hitting the shelves and yellow busses will soon be trucking down the street. Set a goal to make the upcoming school year an environmentally-friendly one. Here are some ways to help you meet that goal: • When prepping school lunches, skip the disposable sandwich bags and choose BPA-free, reusable containers instead. • Pack a washable cloth napkin, thermos, and reusable utensils. • Choose fresh fruit over prepackaged foods. • Reuse leftover supplies from last year, like backpacks and scissors. • Buy recycled paper and encourage your kids to start recycling. • Consider using cardboard or canvas binders instead of standard plastic binders. • Choose refillable or biodegradable pens and recycled pencils. • If you need a new desk for your student, consider buying used or repurposed items. • Remind your kids that fashionable and trendy clothes can be found in thrift and second hand stores, too.

WHAT’S ON DECC

By Sue Ellen Moore | Sales DirectorDID YOU KNOW? Earle is a long-time employee and will be celebrating 16 years at the DECC this September! Those years have all been spent in the Building Services Department as a Unit 11- Expo Services. They prep/set up for conventions and events, help as needed during the event, and tear down/take items away when it concludes. Earle enjoys his co-workers, the variety of his job with different events coming in and out, and the hustle and bustle of the building. You might not know it, but Earle loves trivia, the Vikings, and hunting for the best burger place around. He is a big fan of music, especially classic rock. His favorite concert at the DECC was when Elton John visited.Earle says he is humbled and honored to be our next employee of the month. He deserves the recognition. Congratulations, Earle!

launch day: Sunday, August 18thFor many departments (sorry, Parking!), August will bring about the summer break we’ve been needing. This will be a time to get reorganized, cross items off those to-do lists, and get our building ready for the busy Fall season.

This month we will host:• 2 Open Interview Sessions (tell your friends, family, and strangers at the coffee shop that we are hiring!)• 3 Conventions• 4 Weddings (GREAT 2020 dates are available if you know anyone looking for a venue with a view)

Bayfront Festival Park and our Parking Lot will be INCREDIBLY busy with Bluesfest, Festival of Sail, and Tribute Fest. Give yourself some extra time to get here and find a parking space on those days.

Did you know you get rewarded for each new hire that you refer to the DECC? You get your choice of 2 hours of PTO or a $20 Concessions Gift Card per employee! Perfect timing for our open interview sessions coming up. Stop by the front desk to pick up extra referral cards.
