UPGRADING OF THE CHEMISTRY LABORATORY

RIMI COLLEGE KADUNA STATE

- PROGRAM REPORT

Preamble:

The Rimi College chemistry laboratory upgrade initiative is part of Mobil Producing Nigeria’s corporate

citizenship outreach and exemplifies the NNPC/MPN joint venture’s significant social investment in

Nigeria, especially in the area of education.

The project which Exxon Mobil and its affiliates supported as part of their investment in citizenship

initiatives to positively affect the lives of thousands of Nigerians was done in partnership with Community

Health Empowerment Foundation (CHEF), a local non-governmental organization working in education

and health system support. Project award and execution lasted for two months – October – December

2015.

Inception and Baseline:

Following the initial inception meeting between Exxon Mobil Officials and Community Health

Empowerment Foundation personnel, a comprehensive needs assessment was carried out followed by

determination of critical needs of the candidate schools

which were Rimi College, Sardauna College and Barewa

College. Needs assessment resulted in several analysis

and visits which clearly identified Rimi College as the

beneficiary of the project based on earlier set out

benchmarks.

Exxon commissioned CHEF to provide an analysis of the

chemistry results trends for Rimi College within the past

five years. Result of the analysis was documented as a

baseline upon which the impact of the upgraded will be

assessed.

Advocacy:

Advocacy sessions between CHEF and the Rimi College school authorities commenced with the schools

PTA providing impressive support and directions. Through the advocacy sessions, it was clearly buttressed

that the project needed the commitment of the school to ensure that the investment led to improvement

in the external examinations on the subject of chemistry in Rimi College.

Documentation of Baseline Structures:

CHEF documented an analysis of the situation of the chemistry laboratory before the investments. The

following were noted:

Partnership

Exxon Mobil worked with a Local Partner, Community Health Empowerment Foundation (CHEF) to

implement the activity. CHEF is a non-governmental organization working in educational, health,

economic and social system support platforms in Nigeria. As the local partner of Exxon Mobil in the

project, CHEF directly implemented the project duly serving as the interface between the donor and the

beneficiary. Project was implemented in two months

Implementation of Upgrade

Upgrade of chemistry laboratory was implemented in two phases: refurbishment of the dilapidated

structures (which included electrical, plumbing, gas supplies, benches etc.) and supply of cutting edge

equipment including island benches, dispensers, voltmeters, etc.)

Procurement and Supplies

Following the approval of the critical needs list, identified equipment were procured, supplied and

installed after the refurbishment of the chemistry laboratory.

All equipment were test-run and found very functional after which the Principal and the Chemistry

teacher took inventory
