In July 2007, Disney’s Wide World of Sports® announced its partnership with Chelsea Football Club, one of the world’s most famous soccer organizations.

The club, who celebrated their 100-year anniversary in 2005, has been the most successful in English soccer over the last three years and has some of the world’s top stars on its roster.

“The affinity between Disney’s Wide World of Sports and Chel-sea Football Club is clear - style, excellence, pride and leadership are values shared by both our great organisations - and we are proud to be presenting sponsor of the high profile soccer show-case series” said Chelsea Chief Executive Peter Kenyon. “Dis-ney offers us a wonderful platform from which to communicate to our fans in the USA and I hope that our expertise and passion for the game can add credibility to the facility and in turn encour-agement to the young people that compete there.”

Under the terms of the four-year agreement, Chelsea becomes the Official Profes-sional Soccer Club of Disney’s Wide World of Sports® and presenting sponsor of the Disney’s Soccer Showcase Series.

In addition to Chelsea Foot-ball Club’s presence at Disney Soccer events, the agreement also creates the opportu-nity for an annual educational exchange program where at least one Chelsea Soccer Academy team will visit and compete at Disney’s Wide World of Sports® Complex.

This year, Chelsea Football Club is sending their U16 Boys Academy team to compete in the U16 Showcase flight of Dis-ney’s Soccer Showcase. Throughout the course of the event, they will face Sockers FC of Chicago (IL), Concorde Fire Elite (GA), and NY Hota Academy 91 (NY).

According to Neil Bath, Academy Manager, “Giving our Acad-

emy players an opportunity to come to the US to compete against some of the best American teams helps each individual player learn and develop.”

Another part of the agreement is the opportunity for Disney’s Wide World of Sports®, in conjunction with adidas®, to select and send an All-Star Team from this year’s Disney’s Soccer Showcase’s U16 Boys Showcase division to London, England to train and compete against the U16 Chelsea Academy team.

In August 2008, the All-Star Team will travel to London for 3+ days, and their experience will include attending a Chelsea Premiership match, watching a first-team training session, par-ticipating in a training session with the Chelsea Academy Team, and playing in an international youth tournament hosted by the Chelsea Academy.

The selection of the All-Star Team will take place over the course of this year’s Disney’s Soccer Showcase. At the conclusion of each U16 Boys Showcase division game, the head coach of each team will select players from their own team and the opposing team as “Players of the Match.” Once the regularly scheduled matches conclude on Decem-ber 29, the selections will be

totaled and the leading athlete with the most votes from each

team, as well as three at-large players, will be selected to the All-Star Team, totaling an 18-member squad.

The head coach and assistant coach of the winning U16 Boys Showcase division team, or runner up if Chelsea FC wins the final, will be invited to serve as the All-Star Team coaches.

Coaches Corner with Bobby Clark

Since starting as head coach of the University of Notre Dame’s men’s soc-cer team six years ago, Bobby Clark has guided his teams to six consecutive NCAA Championship appearances a Big East tournament title in 2003 and the program’s first Big East regular-season crown in 2004. The 2006 cam-paign was another milestone for Notre Dame as the Fighting Irish reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.

1. What is your coaching strategy? First and foremost I always try to remember that soccer is a game and, as such, it should be fun for everyone involved. Having said that, I want my players and my team to play to their potential, so I try to create an environment that challenges the players but is also fun.

2. What do you look for while recruiting a player?I look for someone who has something special. It may be his drib-bling, his tackling, his athleticism, or his nose for the goal. Having said that, I like players who handle the ball well. Players who when they receive the ball seem to make the game slow down. This is an optical illusion but because of their composure on the ball it seems as though they have so much more space and time.

3. What advice would you give a player looking to attract the at-tention of a college coach? Before the tournament begins you should contact a variety of colleges with your playing and academic information but once the games start, no gimmicks, just play well for your team. Don’t try

to be special just try to make sense out of the game and be a team player. Forget all about the recruiters, just worry about playing well for your team and helping them play well.

4. What are some things a parent can do to get their player noticed?Make sure their son / daughter has contacted colleges prior to the tournament….but make your son / daughter do the contacting. Too often parents do the work that their child should be doing. As a college coach I will want to talk to the parent at some time but I really want to know about their son / daughter, so it is important that they get involved in the communication.

5. What is the best part of coaching?I love planning a session. Trying to make sure that every player in the group is being catered for. This is not easy. Obviously the team has to come first but putting together a challenging session that will improve the group as a whole while also catering to the individuals is challenging.

6. What is your favorite coaching moment?I just love being on the field with the team. Time just seems to fly past. The fun part is taking the evidence from a past game and trying to use this in the coaching sessions and hopefully making the team better the next time they take the field. The game should always be the reference point from which coaching sessions are planned.

7. Define “Coaching” in one sentence.Coaching is simply another word for teaching and encompasses all the other skills needed by any other teacher, no matter the subject being taught.

Children in Central Florida and beyond will be able to play the game of soccer because of Passback and this Experience at Disney’s Soccer Showcase. Thanks!

Referee of the Day - Sonia Troche

Sonia Troche, a native of Oxnard, Calif. , started her refereeing career ten years ago in the state of Washington. After two years, Troche moved to California and during her three-year stint in the Golden State, she was invited to referee in the Silver Mug tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., a tournament she had participated in as a youth player. Now a resident of Kissimmee, Fla., Troche will be refereeing in her fifth Disney’s Soccer Showcase presented by Chelsea Football Club, this December.

1. Why did you decide to become a referee? After getting married, and having two (2) children, and not able to continue to play soccer competitively I decided to start refereeing and stay involved in the sport I have loved and enjoyed.

2. What moment in you refereeing career stands out the most?Seeing my daughter at age 14 become a youth referee and having the opportunity to work games with her and being able to pass on my knowledge. 3. Do you only referee youth games or do you referee high school, colleges, etc.No I don’t only referee youth games, I also officiate High School, College, Community Adult Men and women games, I am a member of FHSSA, ISOBA, NISOA, CFSL.

4. Did you participate in sports growing up? Yes, I have played over twenty (20) years of soccer, and eight (8) years of tennis. 5. What was your view on referees while participating in sports? Did that help you in the way that you ref games today? While participating in sports my view on referees, made me realize that they are humans and they can also make mistakes. Yes, very much I have taken those experiences while as a player and worked hard on preventing making mistakes as much as possible.

6. Overall, what has your experience as a referee been like? If you could sum it up in one sentence, what would it be?Overall, it has been a challenging, educational and rewarding experience.

In 2007, English Premiership side Chelsea Foot-ball Club became presenting sponsor of Disney’s Soccer Showcase Series. There were only 4 age groups: U16 and U17 boys and girls and only 71 teams competed in inaugural Disney’s Soccer Showcase in 2000.

The highest scoring championship game in Disney’s Soccer Showcase history occurred in 2007 when the Nomads from California defeated Concord Roma from Delaware 5-4 for the U17 Boys Predator division title.

There have been numerous 1-0 championship games in the history of Disney’s Soccer Showcase but only one actually went scoreless through overtime; in 2003 the U18 Girls of Colorado Rush Nike won 1-0 on penalty kicks against the Sereno Golden Eagles of Arizona.
