SANTI SCHOOL
Walk through the Chelsea Market Concourse this winter
and you'll feel as if you've traveled to the remote corners
of Nepal as you view our current photo exhibit, featuring the
students and teachers of The Santi School Project, a charity
promoting quality education in rural Nepal for girls and
ethnic minorities. The exhibit features breathtaking views of
the Himalayan foothills and intimate portraits of Santi School
students, including Ganga, a Dalit ("untouchable") girl whose
illiterate mother is determined to see her four daughters receive
the education she was never offered. Learn more about the
project and the exhibit at santischool.org.

ALABAMA FOOD
Recently, Chelsea Market was thrilled to host The Art of
Alabama Food, a traveling exhibit documenting the beloved
and varied cuisine of Alabama. “It’s an exciting time for
Alabama food,” says Alabama Tourism Department Director
Lee Sentell. “We are excited to share a taste of that with a large
swath of the South and New York City.”
Guests at the Chelsea Market kickoff event January 30 were
treated to the ultimate tailgate experience, featuring notable
southern chefs such as Bob Baumhower, James Boyce, Lucy
Buffett, Chris Hastings, and more. The exhibit featured thirty-
six photographs designed to inform and entice guests with
imagery from a culinary capital of the South. The photos were
selected from the Alabama Tourism brochure “100 Dishes to Eat
in Alabama Before You Die," which is available for free download
at ilovealabama.com. For an insiders guide to the Alabama food
experience, download the "100 Dishes" smartphone app for
iPhone or Android.
The Art of Alabama Food made its national debut in New York
City this past January and will travel to New Orleans in April
and Nashville in May before wrapping up at Lenox Square Mall
in Atlanta on May 26, 2014. Learn more at:

CORKBUZZ
We're thrilled to announce that this summer Master
Sommelier and restaurateur Laura Maniec (Corkbuzz
Wine Studio) will open Corkbuzz Wine Bar at Chelsea Market.
The community-centered space will feature the work of
designer Stephanie Goto, who takes inspiration from European
plazas and markets like the Spanish Steps, La Boqueria, and
other places that invite gather to socialize, graze and linger. At
Corkbuzz Wine Bar, guests will be encouraged to enjoy wine
and small plates by Chef Phil Conlon in the bustling bar or relax
on the stepped seating, ideal for dining, mingling, and enjoying
wine classes.
"I look forward to drawing on and contributing to Chelsea
Market's vibrant energy by offering a singular wine experience
and bringing on the bubbly," says owner Laura Maniec. "Chelsea
Market and its distinguished and diverse roster of restaurants
and artisans exemplifies the creative and collaborative
philosophy that is the foundation of my wine bar, and I am
thrilled to be part of this celebrated New York City institution."

KING OF CHILI
The NY Chilifest overtook Chelsea Market once again this
past January with dozens of chefs competing for the Golden
Chili Mug. About 1,200 attended and organizers raised approxi-
mately $17,000 for Food Systems Network NYC, a group seek-
ing to build a just and vibrant regional food and farm economy
that promotes human and environmental health and prevents
hunger.
As in past years, Dickson's Farmstand Meats supplied all the
chefs with dry-aged, locally-raised beef from Wrighteous Or-
ganics, though many of the chefs chose to expand upon the beef
base by adding pork, lamb, veal sausage, bacon, and other cuts
of meat to the mix. After much discussion over the appropriate-
ness of tomato bases vs. beer broth, the use (or lack thereof) of
toppings, spicing preferences, and other age-old chili questions,
esteemed judges ultimately deemed Los Tacos No. 1's chili the
best in show and awarded them the coveted Golden Chili Mug
for their Watchale Chili. For the first year ever, organizers also
presented a "People's Choice" award, and Mexicue took home
that prize for its unique smoked chorizo chili.

The biggest wine trend we’re seeing for 2014 at Chelsea Wine Vault is more
demand for wines from small producers. It’s exciting for us to find up-
and-coming stars! Our most recent discovery is winemaker Jennifer Lea
Tensley, who is doing some excellent work in California. We’re the exclusive
East Coast retailer of her Lea Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills 2012 ($39.99), a
powerful and refined 92-point Pinot that tastes like it should cost $75. It’s
been a huge hit with our staff and customers.
We’re also seeing an increased interest in all types of spirits, but especially
tequila and mezcal. Hand-crafted lines are starting to come into the US
market, so it’s perfect timing. One of our favorites is Qui Platinum Extra-
Añejo Tequila ($56.99). It’s rich and flavorful, but still super-smooth, so you
can sip it neat. Plus, it comes in a gorgeous decanter that you’ll want to keep
on display. Visit us online at chelseawinevault.com to stay up to date on our
events, featured products, and more!
